    This style of beekeeping is very similar to what Oscar Perone is doing in South America, the frameless hive are awesome. So good to see how calm and docile are the Apis Cerana, very different from my wild africanized honeybees here in Brazil.

    To produce 1kg of wax bees require 4kg of honey, hence the slow process. Wax is more valuable than honey for a beekeeper

      As a Brazilian beekeeper, working with africanized bees, I guess this is incorrect. Honeybee, uses nectar to produce wax, not honey.

    So, is beekeeping like a solid occupation or is it more like a sidehustle?

    • @icya5844
      @icya5844 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not even really a side hustle... it takes a decent amount of money to start ($150 for a "nuc", and another at least $100 for boxes, frames, inserts) and the amount of time and effort for extracting honey compared to how much it cost isnt really worth it unless you are doing it on a commercial scale. You seem to make the most money selling "nucs" or selling queens but that takes some time/experience.
      (Speaking from the United States)

    • @MariaPetalcorin
      @MariaPetalcorin 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In Japan, keeping Japanese honey bees is typically just a hobby and for some a side hustle. It’s very, very rare to meet someone able to do it as a main living. Beekeeping with Japanese honey bees doesn’t require all the start up costs like mentioned above from the poster in the US, but making a profit from Western bees is mush easier. This is because Western bees produce a lot more honey and can be used for pollination services (a big money making point for commercial beekeepers in the US). Japanese honey bees have a much lower honey production and have a tendency to abscond

    I have Bees here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 of the Black Native Bee Species. 👍
    I use several Hives designs including these :
    UK Nationals, 🇬🇧
    USA Langstroths, 🇺🇸
    And French 🇫🇷 Warre* Hives. (Small Box stack)
    These Warre are very similar to the Japanese Hive system : where Boxes are added underneath (its called "Under-Supering")
    Tip : Use Frames ! 👀
    By letting your Bees use Frames to make Drawn Comb and Store Honey, means the Frames used in Beekeeping (in the West) : Results in the Honey Harvest being taken but the Comb stays INTACT and can be used again by the Bees ! Win, win. 👍
    In doing the Japanese / or Crush and Strain method : you lose all that lovely "Ready Made" Drawn Comb. 😱
    It takes x 5KGs (10lbs) of Feed to make x1Kg (2lbs) of Drawn Comb !!! That's an awful lot of wasted Wax (Construction) gone in the Crush and Strain method of Harvesting Honey. . .
    Frames can be made in a DIY fashion. Aa long as they have x2 Bees Space in all directions (to allow free working access by the Bees) and space to aid removal from the Box !
    Frame can be a Longer Top Rail, resting within a Box ledge each end, side Rails each side. And a bottom Rail nailed into the end parts of the Side Rails. Costs about 30p 50c if using Scrap Wood off say
    a Food Grade Shipment (Heat Treated) Wooden "Pallet" (these use 'heat' to prevent Woodworm etc. Not any Chemicals : These pesticide treated ones could harm Bees. If it has H.T burned into the Wood : it has been "Heat Treated."
    Pallets are Free and found readily available in Depots and Warehouses & Stores.
    And easy to break up and get useable wood from : with a Hammer and a Hand Saw. Just time and a bit of effort pulling it apart ! (Even basic Hives can be made if Planks are glued together. For Brood and Super Box making etc.)
    Information :
    Frames and their Wax in them, are usually used on an average x3 Year cycle. Oldest ones (x3 Years*) are in the Brood Box (Darkest* Wax) that can be taken out, spun to extract any areas of Honey in them (Once Brood has hatched out of them.) The Wax heated, then filtered, poured, onto Silicon Wax Sheet Moulds : to make New Foundation ! Win, win.
    Ones added before this : 2nd year are made that last Spring, Summer and will be of mainly Stored Honey (Mid Tone Wax.)
    And the Newest x1 Year made in this Bee Seasons Spring ! Will be New Wax: prestine & White in colour with light Nectar, or Pale coloured Honey, that is not yet Capped, or "Fanned" down (by Bees Wings !) The Moisture Level to be called Honey ! Need to be 17% or less in moisture in Readings (Refractometer.) Before you can Harvest it. : If dripping honey comes out on a ight shake Test. (If it drips) its to Wet and could ferment in your Honey Jars. Hope this helps. 😎
    🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝 🐝
    Happy Beekeeping 2023.
