    I'm in fabrication and use alot of precision tig welding but I gave up on using an auto dark lense I got my starts and stops perfect with a dark lense so for me the auto isn't useful .... but even when I was stick welding most of the time I couldn't stand those .... I got a bad headache round by lunch break due to the very small exposures before the lenses go dark. But not everyone has that issue and for those whose eyes are less sensitive or dont need bifocals they are the best thing to have ... like everything we all got our preferences use what works for you brother. Only thing to do is experiment

    I use a shade 10 auto darkening lens but I also keep a shade 10 and 11 fixed lens for extra Incase my auto brakes.

    I prefer passive shade 11 in my flip front

    Keep in mind the auto tint lenses when not in use are a comfortable shade 5. It's all about personal preferences. Good luck, I'm still running project across the country. Stay Safe!

    I was picking up some wire and tips at Praxair the other day and priced out the HD version of that lenses and it was $150, I left it right there LOL
    I've gambled a bit with the Ebay knockoff lenses and it's a hit or miss with those, but at $4 a piece I risk it once and a while. I got a couple that where good and then a slew of them that are all trash and not worth the plastic they came in LOL
    But I always carry a back up fixed shade close by with the auto tint lenses.

    I'd rather spring for an auto darkening lens than stray arc on across a bellows... lol... the OPTREL NOVA is good for TIG but you have to keep it in sunlight between jobs or it wont work come the next shutdown season... they're available at Acklands... Regards from 146!

    Yes the delay time on the Miller is about 1/125th of a second! You can fit up, mill prep, all the essentials of tube welding with your hood down. Therefore reducing the chance of arc flash from your rig as well as other craft in the work area. When the auto hoods first came out I swore I would NEVER own one! Now wouldn't be caught w/o it! Just my professional opinion. Been a Union BM FOR over 30 years.

      Doug Wisdom that’s a good way to look at it! Yeah I’m still in between the two. I’m gonna run the fixed shade for a month and see how I feel

    this might be a really silly question, but couldn't you flood the work area with a silly amount of light, so you can see through your regular lens? 80 dollars buys multiple thousand lumens worth of portable lighting nowadays.

    • @JTwelder.
      @JTwelder.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question but no that wouldn't work because welding lenses are shaded so dark that even in a extremely lit area you still can't see through them. A welding arc is so bright it can burn your eyes in a few seconds of looking at it. That's why they have to be shaded so dark.

    The question is? Can you put a cost on your vision? For the last 10-12 years I've used the Miller XL Elite! Have had it in many tight spots, mirror welds, buddy welds etc. Love the Miller XL! When I bought mine back in about 05 they cost 300.00 plus! Still have the one in operation!

      Doug Wisdom any auto tint is worse for your vision than a solid shade technically because of the very short delay between switching shades. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard a good thing about the miller all I’ve ever heard is complaints.

      @@JTwelder. I have to say that’s not correct. Since the auto lens are blocking all IR and UV 100% of the time even if it fails to darken. It darkens fast enough that there is no danger.

    Why dont you wear tf he big autodark helmets in th ed field. I don't get it

    • @JTwelder.
      @JTwelder.  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      dan tsy 1. Way too big and bulky 2. Replacement cover lenses are costly and uncommon 3. We beat on our shields in the field and they need replacement every so often so spending $400 on a shield is senseless when you know your gonna break it 4. Could get stolen 5. The 2x4s they have now are top of the line and just compact versions of the full auto helmets example there’s a Lincoln 4c 2x4 now on the market and Optrel makes a awesome 2x4 also 6. Flip fronts are highly useful in the field 7. A lot of auto shields don’t fit on a hard hat. 8. Auto shields are usually heavy and the flip front field shields are usually ultra light.

    • @JTwelder.
      @JTwelder.  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Smith if your welding on something that doesn’t have a lot of tight spaces like a storage tank nobody would say anything because that would work. Once you get into a boiler or doing pipe in position you run out of space and guys would try and give your their old shields to use.
