    One of the things I learned when I made my first shaving horse was that when trimming a round branch to a smaller round, as the handle of the mallet is to use the hatchet and saw to make the handle square first, then the draw knife to make it round/oval, so it fits your hand. Like what you did and how you did it. Telling folks how long it took might help them have a realistic view of how much time to commit to when starting. When I made my first one I spent about ten hours. My second one was about 8 hours because I began with a slab, from a saw mill, for the seat. Keep up the good work.

    Nice job!
    One quick tip:
    If you haven't found out already, a sharp angle from head to handle on a mallet usually means it will snap off right at the transition point. It's best to let there be a taper from the head to the handle; the more gradual the taper, the less likely that the head snaps off in use.👍

    Well Done. An excellent first try. Well thought out, good setups, good idea to list tools as they were used.
    I've looked through the replies others have sent, all good advice.
    You've done the first hard part: making a tool to make other tools.
    Think about the poor sod that had to make the first axe..."Og find sharp rock, hit tree. Is Good."
    In future you MAY want to splay out those legs a bit...they will make for a more steady (and less likely to break) stance for the horse. Think a REALLY long tripod. I'm sure you've seen other pics of horses for examples.
    Another thing if you don't have them yet, is scabbards/guards for your edge tools. I've used canvas (doubled up if thin), leather, garden hose split lengthwise (for my drawknives) and fire hose (for hatchet heads, augers, chisels).
    Fire hose is often free at fire departments, they have to pay to dispose of old hose.
    Garden hose free in most trash piles. Make sure all hoses are THOROUGHLY dried out (4-6 weeks!) before using, don't want to put your nice tools in something to rust.
    I apply paste wax (AKA bowling alley wax) to all my tools to preserve them. A coat after the tool is used replaces what has worn off when using the tool.
    Paste wax is also used to lube the bottoms of wood drawers so they slide more easily. It has many uses.

      @LandisLegacyFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      That's a really good idea with the hoses for scabbards. I'll have to do that! Josh

    Nice job on both the horse & the video. I like how your video showed you either just testing things out or learning & adjusting you built (like adding the peg to hold your wedge in place & adding the V notch to hold the workpiece). I too appreciate the skill that you have and labor that you invested in doing this all by hand, from a branch, with 'vintage' tools.

    Hi Josh 🤗 I’ve been following your channel for over 5 years now and have many of your videos saved in my library for reference material. One of them is this shaving horse build. I’ve been biting at the bit to construct one in the fashion you made this one. I just recently purchased some acreage and it’s now time for me to build one 😀 So I was wondering if at all possible, could you please provide me with some measurements of your shaving horse? It would be really REALLY appreciated and put to great use. BTW, I am a Navy Veteran and was stationed out of Little Creek Va for 14+ years. Belonged to a Hunt Club out near Emporia for all that time and did a ton of skiing all around your home. Beautiful country. Also did a lot of deer hunting in the George Washington National Forest. I’m very partial to Virginia ❤️. I look forward to your reply.
    Very Respectfully,
    Steve

    • @LandisLegacyFarm
      @LandisLegacyFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, Sorry for the delay in responding to you! I usually try to do a bit better than this..... It's 4'6" long, 18" to the top of the bench, the pivoting part is 24" with the pivot a bit off center so it hangs straight down, the bench is about 7-8" wide. I'm 5'7" and I wouldn't want it any smaller than that.
      Always love hearing from you all that watch what I'm doing. Josh

      @stevejanek8072 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done! I just won a bid on eBay for what will be my first draw knife. It's an antique in very good condition with an 8" blade.
    I want to get one with a 12" or 14" blade for larger timbers also.
    Just started working with raw timbers and having a good time so far. My project I want to build is the shave horse.
    I don't have a spoke shave but plan on getting one soon. Not sure where you live, but the scenery is beautiful!
    Honestly the best part of your video I enjoyed the most was watching you sharpen your draw knife on that river or stream.
    Thanks for posting this, you put your heart and soul into it for sure.

    • @LandisLegacyFarm
      @LandisLegacyFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! There's something special about working wood with hand tools. I'm certainly no professional, but I enjoy the little I do.
      I live in Southwest Virginia, and yes, it is beautiful around here.

    • @Mustbefate
      @Mustbefate 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it takes skill regardless at any level to take raw timbers and covert them into something you envision with your mind. I use to live in Stephens City, VA and Toms Brook- both in the WInchester Valley area. The area you're in is indeed beautiful! Keep carving, it's a very fun hobby and IMO therapeutic.
      The best of it all is staying connected with nature. What makes your video pleasurable to watch is that the only noise you hear are the insects, wind, birds, water, etc...

    • @LandisLegacyFarm
      @LandisLegacyFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. It's funny you said that, because just today, I heard a great quote "Skill looks like luck to the ignorant". You're absolutely right about it being therapeutic. I like to also get a dose of "sharpening therapy" from time to time. Doesn't matter if it's a pocketknife or a chainsaw, I tend to find it very relaxing.
      Thank you for the kind comment.

    excellent build. you've learned a fundamental truth, " it takes a shave horse to build a shave horse". glad you used the old tools. you can wire the treadle together in lieu of using the small wooden pegs to lock the treadle arms. kinda like the wire on a buck saw.

    • @LandisLegacyFarm
      @LandisLegacyFarm  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha. I hadn't really thought about that, but it's definitely true. At the beginning, half the time was just figuring out how to hold a piece so I could work on it.

      I'm kind of stingy with complements. Check some of my other smart rear end words for other presenters. Yours is above the crowd. Really appreciate the journey from downed tree to finished, real, usable item.

      Awesome! I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed it so much. I understand where you're coming from with commenting. It's very unusual for me to comment on someone's video unless I REALLY liked it.

    Really fun to watch. Try to get that wet stone a little more level next time. Have you made any changes after using it?

      Glad you enjoyed it! I haven't made any changes yet, however I may make some in the future. This past summer I was working a cutter-mattock handle on it, and found that it was a bit awkward to fit on the horse. Either the top horizontal holding dowel needs raised, or the wedge part on the bench needs to be smaller. Other than that it's been great! Josh

    Pat yourself on the back. Also tell yourself you can always learn but only if you are willing to try. Good job.

    Nice job. When you use a draw knife use your body weight not your arms to draw the knife towards you. Keep up the good work!
