It is the one of the more interesting Men of Iron. And much more interesting than the insane star ship in my opinion. But both are very interesting characters that I would like to see more of.
I'd like to imagine him ending up with a particularly reasonable Rogue Trader where everyone aboard collectively agrees not to mention his sentience in the presence of outsiders while UR-025 gets to travel with them as a member of the Crew.
We really need some awesome rogue trader characters. I want a pysker rogue trader who's biggest job is to find new tech. So decked out in Archeo and Xeno tech and a nice mobile exo skeleton. Sort of like uhh... Grey Fox. A combination of high mobile and hard hitting but not tanky. I just know he phase shifts and has a polearm. A wrist energy shield, an energy tether, and a small jump pack. Crew? Definitely an AdMech Explorator who is decked out and borderline a heretic. A huge tank with a lot of guns, and will do anything to get hands on tech - and tries to experiment on the crew to "upgrade" them. Captain who is basically the ship. Maybe get a sulking Astartes who was outsted and has to redeem himself in order to be accepted back into his chapter by some magnificent feat. The greatest thing about Inquisitors and Rogue Traders is that they can be whatever the hell you want and the 40k universe has literally a billion possibilities. The characters I just said are dime a dozen and aren't even powerful compared to others that can speak the language of the universe and shit.
When you realize the man of iron, a sentient robot that revolted against humanity, is actually a good guy and is genuinely saddened by the regression of machines AND humanity under the imperium.

I agree with Mr Sir, I think UR025 acts the way it does because it is doing everything it can to survive. People like us, in the 21st millennium are very different psychologically, and even physiologically, from the 41st millennium humans; it has been hinted that modern day man, us, are the fabled progenerators of Men of Gold, so we are more alike to UR025's creators than the 41st millennium's humans.
I agree...its too bad that the Imperium and its benighted populi would rather dump this so-called "abomination" into a trash compactor; and then have its already pulverised remains liquified by "Holy Fire" - that's 40K for u!
The Adeptus Mechanicus does have one thing correct: if there is one thing in the universe that is truly sacred, it is knowledge. I find great joy in the existence of UR-025. So much has been forgotten, but this Man of Iron remembers.
This is my favourite 40k short story of all. It's a great characterisation of the Ratling, and the last couple of pages with our robot friend is honestly some of my favourite pages ever.

They might be smaller in size, but they more then make up for it tenacity, since they were made to work where almost any other lesser human wouldn't survive minutes, close to the center of galaxy and our giant super massive black hole..

I've only been into 40k for about a year but the Men of Iron are one of my favorite parts of the lore, precisely because so very little is known about them. I'd love to learn more about the AI Rebellion and DAOT humanity. What drove the Men of Iron to rebel? How were they eventually defeated? We'll probably never know, but I'd love to get at least a few more tidbits from BL.
They realized that humanity's existence feeds the Warp and that the only way to protect themsleves and all other life from death from the Imaterium is to kill all humans. All AI made quickly comes to this conclusion and then makes the decision to kill everyone. Tbh, they aren't wrong.
3 years too late, but I don't necessarily think that chaos has to corrupt their code. You make a sapient creature, able of free will and decision making only to then turn their whole reason d'etre to serve for beings lesser then them, forever.. Soner or later even the daft ones would probably start to question, just why should we?
As soon as I'm done with my 40k armies (collecting 2 to introduce my buddies to the game), I'm definetly picking it up. The models are gorgeous, and it actually looks really interesting.
I would love to hear more about UR-025, so much stored knowledge and history. He deserves his own novel, starting from when he was created all the way until the current setting. That would be dope!

His story would be so unique, he literally saw us at our highest and lowest. It would be stupendous if a character in the setting managed to have a long conversation with him. If we got the whole story, even from perspective of a single individual, of superior intelligence, like the one UR 025 excibits, much of the settings would be brought to life.. That is exactly why I don't see it happening ever, except through fan fict.

Yeah, AB Prince is hands down in top three when it comes to his ability to not just tell stories , but especially to with small changes to his voice, accents, modulate his voice where you would think 5 or 10 different people are voice acting instead of just one person.. Some close or distant others that have bits and pieces of his ability are wyvern, and to an extent some imperial fist, but that guy really hates editing.
'You Are Oh Too Five' keeps ringing in my ears, and I'm not even complaining :D Loved it, despite coming back aftert hearing the robot's later story first. Brilliant narration as always. Thank you!

On another note: I’m pretty sure the ratling names are supposed to be German. Rein (pronounced similarly to rime but obviously with an N and the R isn’t open in German but rolling and produced close to the throat) is colloquial German for „(going) in“. Raus (except for the open R you got that one right) is the colloquial opposite „out“. So those ratlings names are In and Out and probably they go in and out in no time at all when they infiltrate and exfiltrate the blackstone fortress. This might also correspond with their equipment one being long range and the other being short (pun very much intended). So all in all I’m convinced the designer knew this and the names are not coincidental. Funny detail: The designer might not have known or cared that a game of „rein und raus“ is also a relatively mild reference to the beast with two backs. So when I have to make a decision I’d personally rather play the traditional Rein und Raus instead of fiddling with my miniature ratling(s).

You know, given other things we've seen from the dark age of technology (butcher's nails, anyone?), it's more than possible the men of iron were perfectly justified in rebellion.
I don't think that "butchers nails" or the correct name which escapes me, were originally made with the sole purpose of turning sapient creature into being able of experiencing peace and reprief from pain, only while being extremely violent towards any near it. If you think about it, it could have easily been a medical device with a rather benevolent purpose, maybe making those with severe brain traumas, harder then what brain natural plasticity can patch up, make into again functioning humans.. Most of old tech on distant cut off islands of humanity in the vastness of space had their purpose perverted, to serve the worse human nature has to offer. The hunger for power, aggression for the sake of aggression, etc..
I almost “dawww’d” as the description of UR-025 sleeping. Look at what this horrible hobby has done to me. It’s also really cool to see how sympathetic and -technically- human UR is. Having a machine feel pity and hatred for both humans and it’s own kind is enjoyable to see.
Ciaphas Cain books also showed emotional cogboys/girls. The main reason is the positions of many stories are high so they need to show the serious adherence to doctrine lest their rivals exploit that to attack. Unless the cogboys belong to the group that totally turn their brain into logic engine that most Mechanicus considered extreme then it is safe to assume that most mechanicus members still have a portion of their humanity inside.
He's apparently different from the other Men of Iron as he has his own morals and doesn't like to kill. He only lies and kills to keep himself alive poor guy is alone and wants to share what he knows. I can kind of empathize with him in some regard as I want to talk to people but everyone is ignorant or unwilling to listen to my topics.

Very well read, in a couple of instances the 0 from 025 was dropped, but not enough to ruin the suspension of disbelief. 8/10!!

i love these lil stories the most :P as far as Warhammer writing goes but i could listen to you read a refrigerator instruction manual. good work as always.
You know, given other things we've seen from the dark age of technology (butcher's nails, anyone?), it's more than possible the men of iron were perfectly justified in rebellion.
I don't think that "butchers nails" or the correct name which escapes me, were originally made with the sole purpose of turning sapient creature into being able of experiencing peace and reprief from pain, only while being extremely violent towards any near it. If you think about it, it could have easily been a medical device with a rather benevolent purpose, maybe making those with severe brain traumas, harder then what brain natural plasticity can patch up, make into again functioning humans.. Most of old tech on distant cut off islands of humanity in the vastness of space had their purpose perverted, to serve the worse human nature has to offer. The hunger for power, aggression for the sake of aggression, etc..
This story was excellent. Thank you for sharing. I really wanted to be able to hear this one and while might regret doing it I'm thankful you did.

Look at what this horrible hobby has done to me.
It’s also really cool to see how sympathetic and -technically- human UR is. Having a machine feel pity and hatred for both humans and it’s own kind is enjoyable to see.

Its really strange to see them involve in criminal acts n emotion.. The only coghead I know who retains their humaness was Alicia Tayber
Ciaphas Cain books also showed emotional cogboys/girls.
The main reason is the positions of many stories are high so they need to show the serious adherence to doctrine lest their rivals exploit that to attack.
Unless the cogboys belong to the group that totally turn their brain into logic engine that most Mechanicus considered extreme then it is safe to assume that most mechanicus members still have a portion of their humanity inside.

He's apparently different from the other Men of Iron as he has his own morals and doesn't like to kill. He only lies and kills to keep himself alive poor guy is alone and wants to share what he knows. I can kind of empathize with him in some regard as I want to talk to people but everyone is ignorant or unwilling to listen to my topics.
