So, I didn’t realize I never spoke about poor Thor at the end until someone else pointed it out. He was the only one to get 0 points, and when I was going through my stacks I only went through the face up ones to sort everyone out so I never saw any of his cards. Sorry Thor fans!
So let me say here that I really like Thor and think he’s completely viable in solo play. Yes, he came in under average in every category, but overall he still works and you can definitely have a good time with him. He definitely needs help with a minion heavy scenario/mod set, and you’re gonna need to put a decent amount of threat control in his deck, but you can still totally make him work. I wouldn’t have said he was the worst solo hero if you asked me before I made this video (I think it’s Valkyrie), but I probably would’ve had him bottom 5 so he wasn’t too far off.
I think that just speaks to the quality of the solo play in this game that you can still have fun and make certain heroes work that are probably better played in multiplayer.
Fun video, Josh. The format led to some really great pacing. Obviously using a pass or fail point system has it's flaws but makes for a fun viewing experience. That being said, the overall rankings didn't deviate too far from what you would expect +1/-1 point, Gamora being a 2 is a crime though :). I was a bit surprised there wasn't a category for economy (resources/card draw) as it's one of the biggest factors in a heroes viability. Also I know status tokens contribute to survivability and AE but stuns/confuses contribute to villain control as well as it can block boost effects and villain interupt/responses.
Thanks Tonee! Ha yeah I was a little surprised at how a few of them turned out by the end 😆. But ultimately it was just a fun excuse to talk about every hero in a little bit different way and where the rankings were strange it was hopefully more amusing than anything lol.
I agree that economy is huge, and in the first video I filmed where I was just talking about what makes a good solo hero (using Miles and Jess as my examples), it was one of the topics I discussed. But when I had to scrap that and decided that I was going to go in this direction instead I was hoping to keep the length down so I simplified the categories a little bit. I tried to work it in here and there but didn’t end up talking about it as much as I probably should have. It also didn’t help I started filming at 11 when I’m usually in bed by 10 😅.
@@GetUpandGame that’s funny I started editing my latest video at 11 last night when really I should have been asleep already. Stayed up until 1:30 and had to get up at 6:00. You have to sacrifice sleep for the content :)

Cool video! Very fun to watch. I can't say I agree with all of the final rankings but that's okay. :) It's always interesting to see how others rank heroes.
For me, 'Ease of Setup' is probably the most important scoring metric for solo play. I have a very hard time enjoying any heroes that have a lot of cards or counters they have to get into play before they're any good. For example, I know everybody raves about Ironheart, but I really do not enjoy playing her solo at all. I understand that she hits like a truck eventually but it drives me nuts when I'm playing against a villain who either starts fast-and-furious or has a low threat threshold on their scheme and I get 3-4 bad early draws that delay setup and make the game a slog. BUT that's just me.
Also I think that Dr Strange is in a league of his own and outshines every other hero in true solo, and it's not even really close imo. I hadn't ever really played him until this last weekend and wow. I can't imagine him struggling against any villain who doesn't have stalwart or steady.
My go-to choices for solo are Cap, Miles, Venom, and Quicksilver. I know Venom and Quick have some setup but they always felt pretty easy to get rolling, and both are a lot of fun to play. 🤷♂
I’ll be honest I don’t agree with all the final rankings either lol. It was a really fun way to go about talking about everyone but definitely in my haste some went left when they should’ve gone right 😆.
I think Board Control is where I lean in the hardest. I love managing the villain and all the cards in play so heroes like SP//dr and Ironheart as you mentioned really appeal to me with all their upgrades. (And Miles is one of my top top heroes for his control as well). But you’re totally right that it can be a real challenge against certain scenarios. You either get setup quick or you lose quick 😅
I’m totally with you on Quicksilver. I think out of everyone I was a little too picky about him for some reason. I do think he needs Friction Resistance to really get rolling, but he’s able to manage things well enough until it arrives. And I’m a big big Venom fan myself!

This was fun! 👍😁 And I like long videos, so that’s not a problem. I play mostly 2-player games (ironic considering my name on YT 😂), but I’m trying to get more solo games in. So I don’t have any strong opinions on solo heroes, but Spider-Woman is definitely one of my favorites. I play her as aggression/leadership, with Boot Camp and Avengers Assemble for some extreme damage finishes. It’s a ton of fun 😁 I generally prefer the stronger heroes, so Cap is another favorite. Miles isn’t a favorite though, I feel like he suffers too much against Steady and Stalwart. I really enjoyed the SHIELD cards he came with though, so much fun. I haven’t forgotten about showing the cards, I’ll get to it sometime this week. And last but not least, congratulations on 1200 subscribers! 🥳
That’s an awesome way to play Spider-woman! Man she’s just so good.
I know Steady and Stalwart are a pain for Miles, but for me I don’t think there’s all that much of it in the game (unless you play Standard 2 which I never do) and even then he still gets Tough so easily so that can kinda replace Stun and he has Double Life so he can still access his alter ego without Confuse. That’s how I justify it anyways 😅😅

I'm overjoyed Spider-Woman is there at the top. When I got into the game, it was with a bundle that had RoRS and I played one Spiderman deck with the suggested deck from the manual, and then the LOTR player in me opened up Jessica Drew and the two aspect part made her my favorite. "If I could only have one hero the rest of my life, it would be Jess." I love that line! Thank you! (But I will add that after my self-imposed She-Hulk focus over the last couple of months, I really enjoy her, too, so I'm a little suspicious of your metric)(I think she's more difficult to learn to pilot but very satisfying once I arrived).

I can totally see it with She-hulk. It seems like every time I play a hero I don’t think I like or just haven’t played in awhile my opinion of them always skyrockets. So really the problem most of the time is just lack of experience (for me anyways). Like I thought I strongly disliked Black Panther, and then when I was playing him for the hot wings video I was really enjoying him and I played a few more games with that deck afterwards and had a blast. So there’s probably more depth to She Hulk than I credit her for just because I haven’t played her a ton, especially recently

Great vid. I haven't played nearly enough to say whether I agree with the results, but to me the main value in something like this is the dialogue you provide as you go along, not necessarily how the rankings pan out. There's a ton of great info in there that's obviously coming from someone who really has the experience to back up what they're saying.
On the ranking system, though, possibly one reason it came out a little weird was that the categories weren't totally orthogonal. In particular, Versatility seemed like it was often more a consequence of Survivability (if someone is low in Survivability, you need to design their deck to compensate, which means they're low in Versatility too). Obviously with such a complex system, picking five completely orthogonal axes to rank them on is probably impossible, though.

Haha yeah that ranking system might not be a terribly accurate measure in the end lol, (especially when watching back and I really wished I had ranked some people differently anyways 😅), but as you say it provided a nice jumping off point to discuss the various elements of the hero’s and that’s what it’s really all about. I’m thankful that people are seeing that and aren’t yelling at me as much as they probably should be for where some heroes ended up 🤣
And you make an excellent point about the Survivability vs Versatility. Somehow I didn’t see the correlation there when I was coming up with this, but it makes perfect sense. I really did enjoy doing the video this way so there might be opportunities for future ones, and feedback like that is incredibly helpful. Thank you!

Great review run-through. I found it really interesting that you include alter-ego use, and ability to deck build with all aspects. It's a very holistic approach I think that might be why your 3's, 4's, 5's are so close.

I think you’re right. Since most heroes are going to be good at most elements of the game, missing the mark on just one or even two doesn’t make that drastic of a difference. Which is probably a good thing lol

Haha I wouldn’t take this one too seriously. This is the one video I’ve never been able to watch again because I think a made a lot of bad takes. I think most of the discussion is pretty good but the rankings portion is way off. I played Iron Man recently in solo and he was a beast! Really climbed up my rankings. Digging Deep and White Fox with him are incredible 🤩

What are the special powers. And how can you possibly compensate for his weaknesses with certain aspect cards. I am aware that this is not an easy list. But I think there are a lot of people who would be very helpful with such a list.

That’s a really fascinating idea for a list, and an interesting challenge for sure. Steve over at PlayDGame has videos for every single hero, detailing their strengths and weaknesses, and deck builds in all aspects. I definitely recommend checking those out if you haven’t!

Great vid! But man! I play Rocket the most and actually think he's one of the most versatile heroes in the game for solo or multi. He's got decks in every aspect that can hang with the best of em imo. The only real restrictions is that he wants tech and he wants damage soak but even those are so vague
That’s totally fair! I went back and watched what I said about his versatility, and I can definitely see where you’re coming from.
I think for this category I really gave points to the heroes who’s powers were less reliant on external things happening (like there being minions in play) and more to the generally useful stat boost/resource generation abilities. That’s probably what I was thinking at the time anyways
Because I agree with everything you said here lol. I love Rocket and think he’s absolutely fantastic! And I recorded this ranking right before I played him in the 12 Plays of Christmas, and I hardly ever got to use Murdered You in that play and things still went very well for him.
So I’m more then willing to chalk this one up to another of my bad takes 😆
@@GetUpandGame I don't think it's a "bad take" at all and I know you're Rocket-pilled lol. I just wanted to throw in some love for how wide of a spread he's got in different aspects. He's definitely my special little rat though, and I feel like since he got released I've had to be shouting from the rooftops that he's good, actually. My current go-to is a Repurpose deck and it is so much fun. 2022 was an insane year for him! Ingenuity, Repurpose, Forcefield Generator, Honed Technique, AND No Quarter. All like Meta-defining cards for him now and they all came out this year.

I don’t have any good Drax decks built on the website since I usually just throw one together when I play, but thwart and Drax is certainly an interesting discussion.
Intimidation is an amazing thwart card but he only has the 2, so we need help from outside sources. Now the thing about Drax is he can win very quickly once he gets set up. So you don’t need to be amazing at removing threat, you just need to be good enough not to lose.
My first tip is to start the game by thwarting for 1 just to get that first threat off the main scheme. Attacking for 1 just isn’t very valuable, and he needs all the threat mitigation he can get. Sometimes I might even thwart for 1 again on the second turn, even if he has a vengeance counter now. Once he gets to 3+ ATK then you definitely always want to be swinging.
The main way for him to remove threat is going to be with allies. Mantis can thwart for 2 in a pinch, and there are many good allies you can include in your deck depending on what all you own.
The best ones are Jocasta and Brother Voodoo. Jocasta can get a Parry out of the discard pile for you, and then thwart for 2 twice. Brother Voodoo can fish out a Knife Leap, Limitless Stamina, or Fight Me Coward out of your deck for you and then thwart for 2 twice.
You can also use the basic Miles Morales Spider-man to thwart , and Rocket Raccoon has 2 THW as well. Lockjaw is another good option since he can always be played from the discard pile if you desperately need 2 thwart.
You could also go the defense route with things like Hard To Ignore and Not Today. It’s not my favorite way to play Drax, but it is very viable. Counter Punch can do a lot of work with a defending Drax
The main thing to remember is you just need to keep from losing before you can beat the villain down. So be aggressive and just remove threat when you can 😀

I am new to the game. I thought you video was interesting and fair. I do have a question. It seem s not only in your video but in others The Hulk not a great superhero to play. I am wondering if there is a way to beef him so he is even a little better? Any advise?
Hello and welcome to the game! Yeah, unfortunately, there were some complications with the Hulk’s design and he came out the other side pretty disappointing for most.
There have been some cards released that work particularly well with him that come with the SP//DR pack. Namely Limitless Stamina and Unshakable. Those are almost must haves to really get the most out of the green Goliath.
In the end his cards are just less good than other heroes and he doesn’t have a hook or a gimmick that make him unique, but you can still have fun playing with him!

Can you do a similar ranking for Villains? But for how tough they are. Suggestion: the categories could be Scheme Progression, Health Removal, Abilities Annoyance, Villainous Plans (meaning: side schemes & minions & other cards), and Spontaneous Disaster (meaning: their phase could completely disrupt the board, like Loki which for me is the toughest since I still don’t have that many expansions).

I’ll give you a little behind the scenes, I was actually going to do that for this thank you video, but then I remembered a good chunk of my villains are currently in wrapping paper for the Twelve Days of Christmas series lol. Plus since part of that series is revealing who my favorite villains are I didn’t want to talk about them too much until after that series was over.

I'd say though weapon setup is important for Venom it's so easy to do that it's a non-issue. It's very common for Venom to have 2 of his 3 guns out turn 1 thanks to his AE power, mulliganing and his 0 cost weapon tutor. I often have all 3 cards out from turn 1.
All 3 on the first turn, wow! That’s awesome. I don’t think I’m usually that fortunate but it’s definitely not uncommon to get out 2 on the regular 👍
@@GetUpandGame yeah i mulligan hard with him (and don’t put any extra weapons in his deck) so seeing up to 12 cards it’s not uncommon to get two of his guns or a gun and a locked loaded in your starting hand even before his AE power. Plus he starts with 8 resources so if you get all his weapons turn 1 you can actually play them without even needing a double resource. If not by turn 1 I’m almost always set up by turn 2. As long as you can get Multi-Gun out turn 1 you’re doing good.

I didn't agree with the War Machine assessment re: board control and Alter-Ego at all. Then I remembered that I will only ever play him in Justice and I get it.
Ha yeah, Justice circumvents his challenges very nicely! And is such a fantastic way to get the most out of him since he can more than handle the damage side of things on his own. And as more basic cards like Professor X come along that’ll really open up his possibilities in the other aspects
I paused the video and went on a 10 minute tirade about Quicksilver being denied a point for survivability despite his free defence every turn. The second I restarted the video your errata appeared

When I was going back through for the editing I think I had a similar reaction when I realized I had completely forgotten about that VERY KEY ELEMENT of what makes Quicksilver so good. Trying to do this as quickly and as off the cuff as possible was fun to do and hopefully fun to watch but I’ll be the first to admit it was not the most accurate rankings on the internet 😅

I think with any ranking video there is an incidental bias towards characters you play a lot. If you play with the same hero consistently, you internalize their gameplay possibilities.
She-Hulk should have gotten points for alter ego, as she can thwart there, her ablutity reduces threat placed while there, and when she flips back she automatically does 2 damage. But I don't think you play with her very often so as you're doing rankings it doesn't necessarily pop into your head.
I think you consistently have cool gimmicksa and systems for ranking and talking about these characters. It tickles the same part of my brain that likes tabletop games s a hoby to begin with.

Yeah She-Hulk is probably the SINGLE MOST alter-ego-ing hero ever released. Don't forget her 5 REC stat and +2 hand size. It was funny to see Miles get a point for being able to flip in and out within a turn but that doesn't count for She-Hulk :p seriously she loves it so much that I somewhat regularly use Split Personality to flip back into alter-ego.
@@kitsunin4690 totally agree lol. I can only assume the fact that I hadn’t played her in a really long time when I filmed this is why I wasn’t thinking about how much she wants to be flipping. Granted, outside of Justice she’s not super well equipped to repair the damage a flip down might do to the board, but it’s important enough that you should probably just be finding ways to make it happen
@GetUpandGame granted she's one of the weaker heroes generally, but I've played her a lot and I do think her tools are good enough. She effectively gets 3 free thwart per turn in alter-ego when set up, and while Legal Practice is generally the poster-child awful card, it does let you Thwart an additional 5 after Split Personality-ing back to Alter-ego. Aside from Protection, every aspect has many options I've felt work well for her, but all involve flipping almost literally every turn.
Her real problem is that setup difficulty element: She needs 3 specific cards in play to be on-par with other heroes, and two of those (focused rage) are expensive. Fun hero if you want to make extensive use of alter-ego, but frustrating solo if at least one of those cards isn't in your opening hand.
@@kitsunin4690 that’s great analysis! I wish I had more time to spend with every hero. I really enjoy the flipping heroes and making good use of alter ego, and I do like what she’s trying to do 🙂
The great thing is the longer games like these go on every hero just slowly gets better and better so even though she’s still somewhat difficult to be consistent with in solo for now, the only way to go is up!
