  • In this episode, Travel by Numbers heads to Saratoga Springs, New York, USA. We check out Cantina Restaurant, the number one coffee shop in the city - Uncommon Grounds, the downtown core including Putnam Market and finally Historic Congress Park and the Columbian Springs. Saratoga Springs was ranked tenth in the list of the top 10 places to live in New York State for 2014. The name reflects the presence of mineral springs in the area, which has made Saratoga a popular resort destination for over 200 years.

I couldn’t make it this year because of the coronavirus pandemic; I work for a Kentucky based horse trainer who took only twelve horses this year; and he told me that I had to remain at Churchill Downs.
As I watch the races on a horse racing channel; I don’t see any spectators at the track because NYRA wouldn’t allow them to attend the grandstands to watch live racing because of the coronavirus pandemic!
How is the hospitality industry surviving during this coronavirus pandemic?
Are there any boarded up restaurants?
I’m sure that there’s plenty of unemployed people living in the area because of the coronavirus pandemic; and no horse racing fans to occupy the businesses in the downtown area.

Nice video. Saratoga is absolutely beautiful with awesome food and an amazing art scene. One big miss in this is the horse racing track. It is one of the oldest in the country and Saratoga is famous for it. In addition to the ballet shoes around town there are also horse sculptures painted all over. Absoluletly worth a visit!

For sure people should visit the race track. We didn't have time, unfortunately, as we were there for less than 24 hours. But it is certainly something Saratoga Springs is known for, even by Canadians like us. We loved the city though and it becomes obvious that it is a haven for artisans, like Provincetown, MA. Thanks for watching!

Wonderful video with gorgeous cinematography! I've never been to Saratoga Springs, NY, but know its history (but didn't know everything there's to know -- and there's much that's outstanding and beautiful). Shame on me for repeatedly passing the Saratoga Springs rail station en route to Montreal on Amtrak's Adirondack over the years and never stopping to visit. Well, the U.S.-Canadian border is closed, and will be into 2021 -- so I'll be staying in Saratoga Springs before year's end. I want you both to know that YOUR VIDEO has inspired me to stay longer than I had intended, especially after seeing all the beautiful elements of Congress Park -- from the Romanesque aspects of the rear garden to the sweet ducks and the different families of ducklings following their mamas.
In my NY state guidebook, Congress Park is mentioned but the authors didn't hone in on how special it is! Even if snow is coating the ground when I reach Saratoga Springs, I'll be traversing the park (snowshoeing, perhaps?) and snapping lots of photos. I'd also love to sit on one of the romantic stone benches all by my lonesome, to reflect on all the nature around me ... as well as meditate why a decent lady like myself can't seem to attract a gentleman who loves to tour idyllic towns in the U.S.A. and beyond. Gee, there's so much lovely world to see before I die. I don't just want to drink Saratoga Springs water (love those dark blue bottles!); I want to visit a spa in that city and, taking Covid precautions, experience the spring water firsthand. Of course, I plan to dine in lots of the eateries, no doubt wearing my elastic-band pants. I love coffee, so thank you for featuring Uncommon Grounds and for zooming in on the sign that explains its history and ethics. Nothing like ethical AND delicious coffee!
Months ago, when I saw that the Montreal International Jazz Festival wasn't going to be happening, and that the Northern border closure would be extended, I decided to purchase a New York state guidebook secondhand (under $5.00), and wow! There are so many beautiful towns -- not all of them "sleepy" in that must-see-but-nothing-to-do way -- so I kept going back and forth between Hudson and Saratoga Springs. I'll eventually see Hudson, Rhinecliff, Plattsburgh, Westport and so many more, even after the Canadian-U.S. border has long reopened. I've always loved the Hudson River Valley (my family and extended family used to spend time in Sullivan County, in the Catskills back in the 1970s; and as a Girl Scout, I used to go to summer sleepaway camp somewhere in Upstate NY and somewhere in NJ), and I greatly love the Adirondacks State Park.
So, Saratoga Springs, NY, here I come! It'll be so nice actually to get off the train (the Adirondack) at the station, which is adorned by a horse and jockey in mid-speed. The only thing that could thwart my plans is if Amtrak's Adirondack doesn't go north of Albany-Rensselaer station. Currently and through October, I was told by two Amtrak agents by phone, Amtrak's Adirondack runs from NYC Pennsylvania Station to Albany (Albany-Rensselaer station) -- making its regular stops in between -- and the reverse trip south. The reason for the curtailed route is that the Adirondack's terminus north is in Canada: specifically, Montreal. Before Montreal's Central Station [la Gare Centrale], there is the St- Lambert, Quebec, station; and before St. Lambert, there's the border crossing at Lacolle, Quebec / Rouse's Point, NY; and the border crossing is preceded by the Plattsburgh, NY.
Thank you again for the great video!!! Happy & safe travels!!!

Thanks for your kind comments! Like you, we passed Saratoga Springs many times on 6 of our 7 travels to Provincetown, Mass. On the 7th time, though, we purposefully veered off the main route to stay in Saratoga Springs, and we are glad we did. Travelling now, during COVID-19, if rife with challenges and of course not everything is operating as normal which kind of dampens tourism and things to do and see for tourists. While it is a lovely city to check out, I just don't think you'd have the best possible experience there at this time. Personally, I'd wait a year and see where we're at, virus-wise, before booking an extended stay, if possible. We have a very low infection rate here in Canada, hence the closed border. But even for us as Canadians, there are provinces and territories we're not allowed to visit either (the east coast, for instance). We're glad you enjoyed our episode. Thanks for subscribing and please stay safe!

@@burkek1960 You're welcome, Kevin! And I'm going to consider your advice seriously, regarding waiting out Covid. Thank you.
I also appreciate your letting us U.S. citizens know that, despite or because of the low infection rate in Canada, there are limits to access to certain provinces and territories. That made me think of New Zealand in the sense that it can flattened the curve and gotten to zero infections and then ... bam! Infection rates began to rise recently. Lockdown followed.
Wishing you both safe travels, too.

A question for Travel By Numbers and for everyone watching and commenting: How long should I stay in Saratoga Springs, NY? After watching this video -- multiple views, back to back, this evening -- and, before that, having read the Saratoga Springs pages in my travel guidebook, I thought 5 days would be sufficient. Would anyone suggest longer, such as 1 weeks, 1.5 weeks (so that I definitely could experience two weekends) or 2 weeks? I've got the vacation time and I found a hotel in downtown that's affordable enough for me to stay on the longer end. Now, if I were to choose an upscale inn or hotel (but I'm not an upscale kind of gal), then my trip would be limited to 3 days ... lol
I thought I'd mention something that wouldn't be in my 2006 (!) guidebook: Due to Covid-19, there will not be a social (as in cocktail social, emblematic of the old days of Saratoga Springs) at the hotel I'm thinking of, not that it's the only hotel in town that has the social. I understand that we all need to be careful, and I feel so bad for hotels, inns, B&Bs, etc., all around the world. I'll have to return to Saratoga Springs when this pandemic is over -- and continue returning -- to experience the social; horse racing; full spa; and all of the restaurants previously shuttered.
As I plan my trip (haven't booked Amtrak's Adirondack train yet, since it's not yet running past Albany-Rensselaer station aka Albany, NY), I'll continue coming back to comments for this outstanding video on Saratoga Springs. That way I could read replies to my question as to length of stay. Thank you in advance, especially to residents of and frequent travelers to Saratoga Springs.
