Awesome idea, I chuck a lot of onions on the sides of roasts but I've never done them whole like that. Gotta try it now. I can imagine it being great with game too. That blacksmithed cutlery set is really nice 🙏
Baked Onoins have been a great dish for atleast 300 years, the earliest recipe i have read was 1710, but 100% these are so simple and so delicious, im sure farming families have eaten these for over a millennia! Good to see someone show it and get an interest in them, I grew up on a horse ranch and we would just cover onions in foil with a little butter and put them in hot coals. But when we were camping or on long trails or just ran out of foil, you could still just cut the top off like he showed and cook them standing up next to the fire, even without butter still delicious.
Love the potatoes in foil on the fire, when camping thats how we do it and add some mince burger and our veggies. lol no wasting paper plates the foil is it.
Makes think about boiled onions from crawfish boils, we always add extra onions so everyone can get one. They soak up the spices from the boil and are so tasty.
There's nothing better than simple food... Grilled onions, It's definitely something I need to try out :D. I bet the smell in the kitchen was soo nice :D..
How is it a poor man's potato when potatoes are cheaper and onions taste nothing like nor resemble a potato? Just because it's baked does not quantify it being compared to a potato.
But... potatoes are cheaper than onions.
they are today

You know you're poor as fuck when potatoes are out of your financial reach.
there was a time when every one was poor asf. and the potatoes costed more! I just wanted to show the alternative.
@TheVonhollan that is true. I'm curious how onions compare nutritionally to potatoes though
