X was an intelligent, philosophical, and amazingly talented performer. The man had more layers than an onion. I could listen to that man read the phone book bc I know it would be the hardest sounding read that had cadence, rhythm, and passion while he did it. Gonna miss him. Not really because Will Smith was part of Golden era of rap from 1988-94. I like D.M.X but them years are different from 1998 so Kid is right in a way. And that was real hip-hop in the early 90s .

We not going erase that era of hip-hop like it doesn't matter. The era of hip-hop opened the doors for what DMX could do in 1998 . Now he is right by that time Will Smith was making Pop records by the late 90s and I think that's what getting twisted here . But I like how DMX was respectful of Kid era in a way .

      @@JuuKnowImRightTho_ WRONG WRIONG WRONG AF!!!!
Hip Hop is a culture. Rap is an art form spawned from the culture based on spitting bars over beats. R.A.P. = Rhythm And Poetry.
Hip Hop Culture was based on Urban New York, Youth culture, and their activities during the late 70s and early 80s. These things included block parties, graffiti-bombing trains, Dee Jaying, Rapping, 5%er ideology, Jamaica Ave Fashions, particular slang, certain foods, candies etc. I know this for a FACT because I grew up in it. Anything outside of this culture was not considered authentic Hip Hop.
Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince were from Philly, not NY so they were not actually influenced by the exact same things, but being part of Rush (Russell Simmons) management, they were influenced by those who were.
The further you move away from the sensibilities of urban NY Youth, the further you move away from Hip Hop cultural influence.
NWA and Dr Dre were not Hip Hop, they were Gangsta Rap. That shit they do is different. I personally never liked it, but I understand that others do because they speak to a different audience than the Hip Hop purist of New York City.
MC Hammer is not Hip Hop, but still rap all the same, focused on dance.
Emcees from New Jersey like Latifah, NBN, and Redman are Hip Hop, though they have a bit of a different flavor than New York Emcees. I do like what they do.
The reason there is so much confusion is that nobody has clearly defined it for new generations being born after the fact. Those who lived through it know the difference, but there is no documentation to explain it to the new youth. Hopefully, this extended comment of mine can help lay the foundation.
TBH, I don't even think anybody should be allowed to rap unless they are clear on Run-DMC, who they were, and their significance. To not know Run-DMC is blasphemy in Hip-Hop. Start there and then move forward to the present day. Then you will understand everything clearly

One thing you can’t take away from Will is that he is a Black American Icon and a Pioneer of Hip Hop who broke down doors for everyone who came after him. Will rapped like The Sugarhill gang and The furious 5 particularly Melle Mel ( wasn’t as good as Mel but you can hear Mel in Will) where the hardcore gangster MC wasn’t a thing until Schooly D, Ice T and them which came out later in the mid 80s.

They also pioneered rap into commercials too. Watch a commercial from the late 80s thru 90s they influenced that. I get it it’s water down however they force their way in several platforms that Rakim and KRS ONE didn’t… so don’t dismiss that… MTV didn’t even wanna play it in the day time…. That’s WHY Yo MTV RAP was played at night. Kid N Play was another group was able to crossover into other venues…. For the record, DMX is not battling Black Thought in real rap… hate or love it Will Smith pushed rap into the mainstream
