MY opinion and mine alone I never cared for Keith Jackson doing the races. He should have stuck to football as there he was excellent. In my opinion he was rather out of his element but he sure was there to collect the money and expense account he had for the races
One possible aspect of why the TV announcing for this race seems lackluster: Keith Jackson was a TV football announcer extraordinaire, but calling a race is a whole lot different than play-by-play calling of a televised college football game. It's a shame, too, since this was one of Bobby Allison's most noteworthy races where he came from far back to win. One could only imagine what the TV announcing of this race could have been with Mike Joy and Ken Squire at the mics.
The key thing to remember here is Raw Satellite Feed. The complete race as it was run, since the race was being shown on ABC's Wide World of Sports, the entire race could not be shown in that time frame. WWOS at that time was only a 90 minute program. Keith Jackson was more than just a football announcer, he was one of ABC's many announcers that were sent to cover a wide range of events, which is how it was done back in the day. ABC didn't stop this practice until they were able to hire Paul Page away from NBC in late September 1987. Keith Jackson was still used on occasion mainly for the Monaco Grand Prix, until 1990.
"Whoa Nelly & Earnhardt still has the lead!... Incredible!!" Yes, that was the Great Keith Jackson on that call of "The pass in the grass" so I'd say KJ was a little more than passable calling a Stockcar Race. Now I agree with this not being ABC's finest hour, but sure as hell wasn't Keith Jackson's fault! Plus, as Mr Haas so eloquently stated already in this thread, still light-years better than Lampley & Posey! 🤮 LOL!
I was impressed with how quick Harry Hyde and the team replaced the valence on the front of the car. They had to have it previously prepared bc at the high speeds they ran here, the Monte Carlo did have the issue with the air ripping the valence off the car when the car got turned around backwards So they must have had a quick fix made for it great job to Harry and the boys R.I.P. Tim Richmond. You are surely missed for what all you could have accomplished in NASCAR!
I watched this race at the time and immediately knew Bobby Allison was the winner. He got his lap back when he passed Marcus before the last caution. Then he blew everyone away on his new tires after the last pit stop.
Was an awesome Win for the Great Bobby Allison (Man Bobby was frig'n tough on the Super Speedway's, always a threat to the very end of his HOF Career 💪) but damn it was Heart-wrenching for both Marcus & Kenny 😖 I think everyone who watched Nascar back then knew Kenny Schrader was a Win waiting to happen, but I also think all those same folk's, me included, figured this was probably Dave Marcus's last best chance to Win a Cup race 😟
The 390 cfm carburetor worked much better than the foodstamp restrictor plate. Too bad NA$CRAP just didn't leave well enough alone. Hell, they could have even added 1/16" sleeves to the venturi and had an exact 1" opening to further slow them down but not kill the throttle response like that stupid turbulence inducing restrictor plate did. But I forget that their mission was to kill Bill Elliott and also Davey Allison's dominance....
To be fair, Davey Allison's crew was equally responsible for ruining his dominance many times. Been watching a lot of these reports and floored by the number of times bad put stops screwed Davey out of literally walking the field.

The coverage of this race was epically horrific. I mean the best parts were when the guys in the booth weren't saying anything, Donnie Allison actually wasn't that bad, but the other guy was clueless. Still a good race from the good ol' days.
Had not seen this until today - and recall it is a raw feed - so some of the edits on broadcast TV are not there. Keith Jackson seemed to know what was going on - but could not get clarification pretty much any time he asked for help - like confirmation Bobby was on the lead lap. Scoring was always a challenge before electronic timing and scoring came along.
@@MrChristopherHaas Hadn't heard that one - Sam loved obviously stupid questions so I could see it happening. Earnhardt suffered no fools unless he could play a practical joke on them.
Actually Keith Jackson wasn't as clueless as you think. He'd done Nascar coverage for numerous races for ABC Wide World of Sports dating back many years but they weren't full race telecasts. He was more known for his College football coverage. He actually was a big fan of Nascar racing.
Since most of the Firecracker 400's from this era, that are on here are from the actual ABC Wide World of Sports broadcast, except this one does make it seem like they were doing a bad job, however if the Raw Satellite feed was available for those, you might see something similar to this. They were trying to do it live, since the edited product had to be ready for broadcast later that afternoon. When this race ended ABC had approx 3 hours to get the tape ready for broadcast that afternoon. I remember seeing the 1988 version on here a few years ago and it is done in a similar fashion. The 1986 race was run on Friday and was broadcast was on Saturday, just as a example.
He joked about how they couldn't put a race on the air with Dave Marcis leading about 50 laps in, and then he called Bobby Allison an "also ran" when Bobby was in front of Marcis at the end of the lead lap with like 15 to go...and they finished 1-2.
