Dataran Merdeka or Independence Square.
The Malaysian flag was raised for the first time after the British Union flag was lowered at midnight on 31 August 1957. Since then it has become known as Independence Square or Merdeka Square - Malaysia's annual Independence Day parade ground.
Well, now let me tell you some history before that -
Early Chinese and Malay communities in Kuala Lumpur gradually settled on the east side of the Klang River,And on the west side of the river was the agricultural land.In 1880, the colonial administrative office was moved from Klang to Kuala Lumpur.At that time, the British Resident - William Bloomfield Douglas decided that - to avoid the unsanitary environment of the city and the rebellion of the local people - the government offices and workers should live on the west side of the river.
Government offices and police headquarters were established in what is now Jalan Raja Road, then Bukit Aman.
Then there was an immediate need for a playground for police training.British resident -Frank Sweetenham bought the land from Yap Ah Loy for $50 per acre in 1882 - the present Merdeka Square.
In 1897, the government offices were transferred to the present Sultan Abdul Samad building. And this building is a remarkable structure built by the British.
A printing press in the southwest corner of the present Dataran Merdeka Square grounds in 1899 and a town hall in the northeast corner in 1904, a railway office in the southeast corner in 1905, and a post office in the south in 1907, a Survey dept office in the northeast corner in 1910 and the Supreme Court in 1915. Buildings are erected in stages.
The field was finally renamed Dataran Mardeka name from Padang in October 1989 when much history was made.And on August 31, 2007, on the 50th anniversary of Malaysia's nationality, then Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmed Badaobi shouted, "Merdeka, Merdeka, Merdeka." Exactly what our Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said, "This time's struggle is the struggle for our liberation.
