      Despite the way he acted prior, what is covered within this video with regards to maritime labour is all legally correct, seafarers can work 11 months a year and in much worse conditions than what is provided to their staff. I once did 5 months without stepping foot off the ship….working every day.

      @richardharrison903 They seem to do all this on technicalities. They are on there for 17 weeks at a time, one day off a month. My best mate still works there and its difficult to keep standards up as the workers are fatigued and genuwinly dont care as they are paid so little. Ive seen them down the port drunk as hell sleeping in the service area before they go onboard after their one day off a month. Its awful really, a bad accident is going to happen.

      They have been getting Victorian for a few years now. Even here in UK. Nobody noticing. About 5 years ago my company had a new owner. He changed everyone's contract to everything bad. No set hours. Things you had to do not in your contract before. Work on days unsuitable for that employee. Plus cut down staff to work on your own instead of two people. How is that right? When queried he was not happy. People told to just sign it. Employers are getting away with things now. Like rules no.longet

    P&O have made a remarkable discovery that the cost to 'import' and host workers from accross the world is cheaper than having UK/EU citizens who have workers rights, the solution to this abysmal bevahour is that P&O should be compelled to give workers the same rights as UK citizens for as long as it operates in UK waters as a ferry provider - fair time off, miniumn wage, working time regs etc.

    Hebelthwaite will absolutely get a bonus this year. Why? Because he took the flak from this committee and absolutely nothing will change. The people who pay his wage want nothing to change. The MPs interrogating him have no leverage whatsoever. Like it or not, he did his job and blanked the committee. If P&O customers do something, then things might change. Otherwise, they will not. Vile? Yes. But this is how the law currently works. It amused me when the lady committee member asked Hebelthwaite to throw his company under a bus, assuming he had a moral compass.

    I've never before heard the costs of holiday pay and overtime being rolled into the hourly rate for basic hours worked. It can only be done to make the pay sound slightly less attrocious.
    They are paid less than £3 ph - end of story.
    They are working 12 hour shifts 7 days a week until they get a block of days off ashore where, unable to afford accommodation, many of them sleep rough.
    He said that when UK law demands he will pay the national minimum wage. That is an open admission that they can afford to do so, but are deliberately choosing to treat these people with a lack of humanity.

  • @Kendoujo
    @Kendoujo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just because they contract in those 7 or 9 days doesn't mean anyone is allowed to take them. The reason that anecdote about a person working the full time without taking a day is probably based in the work culture. I guarantee it has the unwritten rule of "if you take any of the time, you're gone. Replaced sooner than you otherwise might be"

  • @heliotropezzz333
    @heliotropezzz333 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It could be even less than £2.90 per hour because he keeps saying 'depending on exchange rates' which fluctuate. He keeps talking about 'consolidated pay' rates but it's not normal to count holiday pay and overtime pay as if it bumps up the basic pay per hour.
