A good part of it is that it humanizes Greg and he isn't that much of a sociopath in this book. I really do feel sorry for him when Rowley and Abigail are spending time away from him.
I just love how Greg has matured in this book... he had the chance to reveal the ring to everyone but he did the most selfless thing and hid it from everyone else, so no one could find it. That to me is kinda powerful!
I think it's kind of amusing that this book shows Greg as arguably the nicest he's ever been throughout thanks to how he's humanized a bit...yet everything around said humanization is some of the largest-scale cynicism the series has ever seen outside of vacation books. The humanization is nice, but seriously, what is this, opposite day? 😂
The series definitely should’ve ended here, especially since if you look at the timeline of the series this would logically place during the last semester of Greg’s 8th grade year.
I totally agree. Greg and Rowley getting back together again after Rowley breaking up with Abigail, and the last page mentioning the family theme from the beginning and the Mingos, it just all has this "finality" sense to it. Like it could have been the end of the series right there.
I know I'm late, but fun fact, this was my first ever DOAWK book, and I proceeded to eventually get a collection, finally doing so at the time the Deep End came out. I still enjoy the series alot.

Then a sequel series starts of Gregs High school life
Hard luck is such a solid book, and would’ve worked as a GREAT finale. This book just hits different man.
