The virgin river gorge is such a beautiful stretch of highway to drive through. The way the massive cliffs just loom over you while you pass through the gorge is something that will stick with me forever.
Bailey missed out on the scenery. However, she didn't miss out on her nap.... ;) She knew that Dad had it all under control. I'd love to ride through there on my motorcycle someday. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.
The first time I passed this gorge on my truck, drywall load, I was TENSE. The curves are really the thing you have to be most careful of. Drive it weekly now and it really is a sight.
A Man has got to know his limitations. Most importantly for a Driver he must know his trucks limitations. Many factors to consider. Gross weight-percentage of the grade-length of the grade-road and weather conditions all factor in as to whether you use 2cyl,4cyl or all 6cyl of the JakeBrake to save brake linings. Hard to believe, but I drove for 35 years and never had a truck with a Jake on it and never smoked the brakes. All of this time I drove a company truck and they did not equip the trucks with Jakes. That is a great drive thru that gorge

I went through the gorge last Saturday on my way home from SLC to Los Angeles. I didn't know that small part of AZ (less than 30 miles) was between UT and NV on Interstate 15. It was very beautiful!
Thank you for the trip down memory lane! I grew up in Southern Nevada and in the 1970's my parents had a cabin in Southern Utah that we'd travel to almost every weekend. The Virgin River Gorge really brings back memories! On another note, I've been watching your channel for several years now and you inspired me to fulfill one of my childhood dreams of becoming a truck driver. (I know...sounds silly, but I've always wanted to drive a truck). I retired from my state job after 29 years and became a truck driver this spring at the age of 62. I was ecstatic the other day when you posted that you were in Butte Mt. I was in Butte making a delivery just a few hours after you. Keep up the good work Dan! You're one of the "old school" good truckers.
A LOT of drivers no nothing about their trucks. They need to see overheated brakes, glazed drums and cooked grease seals. The principal of grease on the drum surface and how it catches fire and where the smoke comes from. But, I never heard of a school teaching it. The schools always say "your company will teach you that" they never do. Take care and thank you for the video. Hi bailey!
that gorge is beautiful during the Spring when the flowers are "rushing" to bloom and produce the next generation before the heat of summer arrives. sometimes that gorge even has run off flowing thru it. its not clear water, but its water all the same.
Nice driving. We drive that stretch to Vegas once in a while to visit family and that is the only section between Colorado and Vegas that isn't boring! Thanks.

That is an absolutely stunning area but Bailey was not impressed ;-) Aside from knowing your truck and to work best with its operational features, one major trait that professional truckers have to have is patience, and Dan certainly has that. Thanks for sharing and stay safe, Dan.
i learned my lesson, to keep it slow going down mountain passes. don't know if you've done I-70 west of Denver, coming into Vale, but i was heavy (a beer load), and didn't slow down enough and i started smoking my brakes. i had to live with "squeaky" brakes, even in dry weather, as the shop said the brake shoes weren't bad enough to change. did a lot of mtn climbing during my driving career, and not always in the Rockies.
I live in Canada but we have a home in St. George Ut and drive through the Gorge all the time and I do 55 thru there because the ones who speed, cause the accidents and when there is an accident in the Gorge, its always bad and can jam up for hours. Thanks for the trip thru a great area, and place we haven't been in almost 2 years because of COVID.
I lived in St. George for years, went thru the canyon in my truck constantly. If you're going towards Utah at about the 12-minute mark on your video, there's big horn sheep herds all over the cliffs right there. You're climbing, so you are slow enough to see them. Great video, thanks!
Fact be known, Jessie Cummins designed and patented the engine brake. Cummins engine had first opportunity to use it, they passed and Jacobs bought the patent.
With a great handling vehicle the Virgin River Gorge, when driven at 0200, moonless night, is a lot of fun. Cornering, without other vehicles, brings out the race driver in me. I've driven that route probably 100+ times.

Just spent vacation out there in Zion from Florida and drove this gorge on the way back to Vegas to fly home. It is friggin impressive and then the way it just ENDs, like you were between all these huge mountain walls and then BAM, flat valley! Thanks for showing it and talking us through your thought process as a driver!

Some interesting terrain... I wouldn't want to live in a place as that but it's pretty in its own way. Your video was nicely comforting, smooth and with enough detail to give the effect of floating along and taking it all in.

Most drivers I seen in crashes like the common sense to understand bigger vehicle gravity will pull you down faster heavier.
