@Physical media agent the original avengers was shot in 1.85:1 (didn’t know that actually). So the theatrical version wasn’t as wide as the new avengers theatrical versions.

I actually like the IMAX enhanced versions of the movies that were shot in IMAX. I really feel like it actually makes the home viewing experience quite cinematic. It’s also kinda a treat for those who really wanted to see it in IMAX but weren’t able to and finally get the opportunity to see it years after its release. As someone who saw several of these movies in IMAX, I’m really glad that Disney acknowledges that some people saw the movies in IMAX and wanted to see it again in their preferred way of viewing them. For me, I feel like these films set the bar for IMAX. For several years filmmakers who have used IMAX cameras have made history. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is the first Hollywood film to be shot with IMAX cameras. Michael Bay made IMAX history twice by shooting Age of Extinction with the IMAX 3D digital camera and later The Last Knight with Arri IMAX 2D cameras on a 3D rig. Regardless of the quality of the films, both were technical feats for IMAX. It wasn’t until The Russo Brothers’ involvement in the MCU for Captain America Civil War, Avengers Infinity War and Endgame where they made the record of being the first film to be shot with Arri IMAX cameras and the first films to be shot entirely in the IMAX ratio. And now every studio is wanting in on trying to film movies entirely in the IMAX ratio. For me, these were big deals that the normal moviegoer wouldn’t consider. Bringing in the IMAX enhanced versions of these movies allow the viewer to see what they’ve missed if they couldn’t see it. I’m quite proud that IMAX is slowly expanding their product beyond theaters and documentaries. I know that’s a lot to take in, but these films were pretty revolutionary for Disney, Marvel, and IMAX.
This is the advantage of shooting IMAX photography on 65mm film, as done by Christopher Nolan. For the home viewing experience, he's expanding the IMAX sequences to 16:9 and is able to slide his shots vertically for better composition.
I understand your point, but I don’t see anything wrong with the extra space for the heads, I think it’s intentional when it comes to IMAX because what IMAX and Christopher Nolan likes to do is have subjects centered in the frame so that way the audience won’t get lost scanning out the huge image. The center frame compositions also adds to the immersion, which that’s something what IMAX is known for

I am a physical media collector no matter what, but it would have been nice to get a little bonus for buying.
I wanna see the Nolan’s 1:43 IMAX aspect ratio for home viewing. Also I think Marvel frame their shots for standard theater viewing but also have the extra images for the top and bottom and just throw that in for the IMAX release. They don’t frame for IMAX because they know when many people watch it in a standard theater, that image will be cropped
It’s also worth nothing some filmmakers aren’t like Scott Derrickson and don’t mind if viewers watch the IMAX version at home. Chris Nolan’s movies always have the IMAX versions on the blu ray. Brad Bird said he would have preferred for the IMAX scene to be in the full aspect ratio on the blu ray of his mission impossible film.
Problem is obviously in many cases for marvel movies imax aspect ratio is an afterthought or just an attempt to make as universal frame as possible, that's why there is a lot of just boring negative space in imax framing. But there are movies that have framing almost exclusive for imax and look worse on tv aspect ratio, for example, Dune or Dunkirk.
Good video. Well put together and clearly explained. For me the IMAX enhanced versions are better because in some frames (the ones that were filmed with this in mind probably) you just see more. For example Endgame: at tony's funeral there is a scene where tony has a message for his morgan. In this scene thor and steve are in the back ground. Never knew this till the imax enhanced version where you can see their faces. It just felt like the original stole a bit from me. Where as the imax version gave it back Now some movies, like black widow, are not entirely in the tall ratio. It varies, some frames are normal and some frames are tall. At the end of the day I'll pick IMAX enhanced every time because you could miss somethings if you don't watch it in imax. But it's good that disney gives you the option.
I think avengers 2012 and antman 2015 are some of the few films that truly benefits from the imax aspect ratio because they were intended 1.85:1 Also, I watch the 4k blu-ray version because of the HDR and higher bitrate which is the theatrical versiom!
I wish I owned these Imax enhanced movies on physical media, but because of cost and licensing of Imax, I think they should film in 1.85 aspect ratio. I hate ultra widescreen aspect ratios and other aspect ratios except 2.1 and the one I mentioned earlier.
IMAX or theatrical even open matte is oK , what is not ok is the TV version which is theatrical but crop the left and right side to full your TV, its will lose much information :'( i see the TV version in vew movie in disney plus and HBO
Personally, can’t stand that imax markets the 1.9:1 frame as a “special thing” it’s literally a 16:9 frame with 1.9:1 letterboxes which is less image than a 16:9 frame. So can I market the footage I shoot on my phone as “IMAX” footage lol. Its so ridiculous. There’s only one true imax aspect ratio and that’s 70mm 1.43:1
It works best in the theatre, but it's great to have the option. I would also like a 3D option. First movie I enjoyed this IMAX switch was Chris Nolans the Dark Knight with well placed scenes that benefitted from the IMAX, true IMAX filming. The Switches is the first Guardians of the Galaxy film I also enjoyed. But for the first time ever, I enjoyed an IMAX switch, where is became a character of the film rather than a noticeable visual change was Batman VS Superman. It wasn't until a second viewing did I understand why I was feeling an extra boost of emotion when I noticed the IMAX Change. So I like it all...as Queen has said, I WANT IT ALL. And I want it now. I want Regular, Imax, and 3D...AND I WANT IT NOW. 3D is not dead. Someone is trying to kill it. - Toronto, Canada. PS: I should add, at home I am watching in a dedicated projected theatre room where sitting in front row is like IMAX.
Infinity War and Endgame have both been framed for IMAX and protected for scope. The AC or someone talked about it in an article. With the 2.39:1 version seeming more off to me than the IMAX version with extra headroom. Negative space isn't necessarily something bad. Nolan has been doing it for years. It makes theses movies feel a bit bigger. Like the weight of the world is on their shoulders.
One distributing thing is that IMax movie's aspect ratio changes between different scenes from full screen to cropped screen alternatively and it's kinda annoying.
That's a different issue, mainly affecting Christopher Nolan's films. The IMAX Enhanced movies on Disney+ aren't switching aspect at all, they just are framed for an absolutely massive screen
I think it's worth having the Imax-enhanced version just for film preservation. Infinity War and Endgame made history being the first ever film to use Imax cameras from start to finish. It would have been criminal to lock that version of the film in a vault somewhere never to be seen ever again.
I hope they will change the standard Movie Aspect Ratio to 1.85:1 (like in "Dark Zero Thirty") or normal 16:9 ... I'm really done with 21:9 (26% black bars) they shot one scene of the Mandalorian (the Worm Scene) without black bars and then they switched back to 21:9 and im just thinking why not filming the whole Serial without black bars ... it would really shine on a 4K TV 😩
For tv, yes. For cinema, absolutely not. Majority of the cinema screens are 2.35:1, which is also the best viewing experience with a screen that large. Watching a 1.85:1 film on a screen like that is not a great experience.
@@paracuja Major film directors could give a rats ass about video on demand (at the moment). More than likely they prefer film for a theater screen than a TV.
@@paracuja Uhhhh, if the recent box office successes are much to go by, you are very much wrong in that regard. Besides, nothing beats the traditional moviegoing experience, as convenient as streaming and VOD are.
Something I hate about Marvel movies on Disney+ is that the HDR performance is MUCH WORSE than on the blu-rays. There's a channel here on TH-cam that compares the two and the difference can be huge. Also for some ridiculous reason Disney+ (and Star+) doesn't support HDR at all on Android, even though it used to support it when it just launched. This is very disappointing to me because I stream A LOT on my phone and HDR is very very important to me.
At least they give you the option. I have a projector setup. Certainly not imax large but I sit pretty close to a 120” screen. It bothers me that I can’t get certain movies I. Their imax format. Particularly Dune part 1 and part 2.
If you didn't know yet, Jurassic World (2015) was actually shot with Open Matte ratio (you can search them on torrent sites) with more headroom than you see in this theatrical version..
For some christopher nolan movies on Blu-Ray/DVD, the imax scenes fill up the screen to 1.78:1. In Dunkirk, this was the case, but I felt like this didn't really affect me the way that the negative space of MCU IMAX enhanced movies does.
Side note, I really hate that directors are using the entire full imax screen. Like justice league or dune. It's mainly cause of accessibility. Imax is really not widely available. In America, there are less than 30 real imax theatres. And with dune, you miss so much information in the home releases. And I really mean a lot of details. It's insane how much is lost and not impossible to watch now. I never watched dune in imax cause I don't have an imax near me
I don't think it's an issue with IMAX in TVs. It's just directors and cinematographers who use IMAX for contractual reasons or to justify the more expensive ticket, just like it was with 3D in the last decade. If you take Dune for example, Vilenueve treated all 3 aspect ratios the same way, insuring that the movie was properly formated for all of them
I just preferred the more blended approach in that the more smaller scenes should only be shown in the traditional 2.39 aspect ratio, and the action scenes should be 1.9 to give it more scale. That's particularly where Nolan excels at doing and it makes for a great viewing experience, even at home.
Oh, I can't STAND aspect switching throughout a movie. My OCD won't let me focus on the movie. I refuse to watch Eternals and Aquaman a second time because of this. Transformers 5 is the worst, switching aspect ratio almost every other frame. I couldn't finish watching it. I forced myself to watch Aquaman and Eternals.
Nolan does it though mainly because he is shooting on Imax film cameras. You really can't shoot dialogue scenes with those cameras because they are so loud so it's the reason he only uses them on action scenes. Meanwhile the Marvel movies are shot on digital Imax cameras and because of that, they aren't loud so they shoot everything in Imax. And Nolan has said that he wants to shoot more smaller scale scenes in Imax too and just waiting for technology to be able to be able to remove the camera noise, Because he will never shoot a movie digitally.
@@jaymz_rg1003Transformers five does some crazy aspect ratio switching lol, watching the trailers I thought it would be annoying but while watching I barely even cared.
i very much prefer imax enhanced. i don't like those wide black bars. looks much better on my 120" projector screen. imax enhanced will even be more of a benefit for the smaller tv's like 55".
The awful framing of the imax versions doesn't bother me even viewing it on my phone's small screen but I still prefer the intended aspect ratio the director intended.
I do prefer the Imax version since I rather have more information than less, however I'm very happy they kept both versions on the plataform. So is a win-win situation
2.39 is the best format and 95 percent of films are shot in that format. It is the closest to the human vision which is more let to right not up and down. It is especially a joke when most theatres are Liemax not real IMAX.
Our field of vision is nowhere near that wide. It's more like 1.5 to 1.8. But that's not really a great reason to prefer any particular aspect ratio except when you get to a very high field of view that comes close to filling our entire field of view, like VR or *maybe* some of the very large format cinemas. Wider aspect ratios like Scope are really just a creative choice. They work particularly well for landscapes, and some action scenes can make great use of it (see the Ben-Hur chariot scenes for a great example with an even wider image). They can also be used to great creative effect with horizontal movement in the frame and horizontal symmetry. In my opinion, 2.39 and wider are much clunkier for close ups or scenes with a lot of interesting vertical motion or space (like a lot of indoor stuff).
No one like those black bars at home, show me the whole thing this is the same with Dune the cutout so much information it felt like i didn't even watch the movie
I’m in two minds. As a landscape photographer, I appreciate beautiful compositions, expressly chosen by the cinematographer / director so want to watch a movie in the aspect ratio that matches that creative vision. However, I have a 110” screen with projector in my cinema room and an 85” TV with surround sound in another room and sit close enough to get a similar impact to IMAX. If the film was originally shot for IMAX in the cinema, it’s fine on these large screens at home.
So when I was a kid movies shot in Scope format 2.35/1 were cut off on the sides to fit 4/3 tvs. Now tvs have widescreens and movies are shot in Imax or at least actions scenes close to 4/3 (Snyder's cuts) and they're masked by black bars on the top and bottom to make it look like cinema! On top of that you have every ad and music videos with stupid fake black bars to make it look cool so you end up having black bars on your 1.78/1 widescreen tv all the time. And these Marvel type blockbusters are framed in 2.39/1 but still shot in 1.78 or Imax 1.43 as anyone can see on the monitors of every making of on blu-rays. Shoot the bloody movies on 1.78/1 and everything else unless you are Sergio Leone and actually know how to use the wide format and compose your shots accordingly. Add to this the 90's movies shot in Super 35mm which allowed two framing (scope and tv) and for which we never got a full-frame version, yes I'm talking to you James Cameron. Basically everybody is stupid except me.
For me the IMAX versions aren’t really better versions just a different way to watch the movies. I do have to say that as much as I like the option of IMAX it does bother me that people think it’s better because it fills their screen instead of liking it for composition. Being able to see more or filling a screen doesn’t mean better or definitive every single time
Yeah I don't really care about more screen but when the vast majority of the movie is CGI expanding theniamge to see more of the world they created does help imo
Funny how disney advertises IMAX enhanced, yet the only difference is the aspect ratio. No imax post processing or imax dts is present. My receiver still reports dd+
It's not issue of IMAX. it's the Cinematography and Framing/Composition in IMAX Frame of the DP of the Movie. I know some Framing/Composition of other Movie are so Tight and Loose it still doesn't matter. You're getting the Correct Image No Matter What, the way they intended.
Unless you have a strong aesthetic preference for one framing or the other and are focusing more on that than just being immersed in the film, I don't really see what the argument is. Yes, the 1.9 version has more space above the actor's head, but isn't there just as much extra image below the 2.39 version as above it? In other words, assuming you're watching on a screen with an aspect ratio below 1.9, won't the character's face be the exact same size and in the exact same location on your screen in both versions?
It's a matter of composition. Compositional choices are intentionally made to draw your eye to certain parts of the screen vs. others and some ratios of spacing are more aesthetically pleasing than others. And as was explained in the video, extra information that can be distracting is "cropped" naturally in a true IMAX theatre but shown at home. In a visual medium all of these facts change the experience that film makers spend months/years designing.
IMAX for TV is only good for action sequences that were shot on IMAX cameras and later framed specifically for home viewing. You get the changing aspect ratios on few physical media titles like The Dark Knight, Guardians Of The Galaxy and M:I Fallout. Currently, IMAX Enchanced is just a gimmick.
I really don’t mind that the top area for imax enhanced is just empty room, as someone who hates the black bars on the top as it really takes me out of the immersion, and with the imax enhanced it just pulls me in.
I don't agree with this video or the comments of Scott Derrickson, and the reason why is because, I have a project and love the size I get of 125 inches, but it gets wasted with the 2.39 aspect. Then to get the full size you have to zoom the image or use the letter box image. Again what a waste if we get the so full screen in the theater and it's made the way we should see it that way, isn't that the reason for the flat screen we have at home to see the full picture. Stop take the image away. Any way if you buy a 65 inch tv you want to be able to watch all of that 65 inches not less.
I think there's an issue of the "home viewing" version. A lot of content is reviewed and modified for that purpose. So, that "theatrical version" it's almost what you see in the theater. In the case of IMAX films, I think too much is lost either in image or screen when traditionally adjusted. I say the more of the tv screen is used, the better, and that's why the enhanced is a cool version. I agree that it would benefit from a little bit of reframing, but it should be done by the director.
Great video by the way. So when I watched Black Widow on Disney+ in Imax, I really enjoyed it. I have a projector, and the size of my screen allows for the changing aspect ratios to look really good. Only a few scenes are in Imax. But when I tried to watch Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, all of the visual effects seem to look fake, I don’t know if it’s the added resolution that does it, I even noticed it for Infinity War, especially with digital characters. I was initially upset that the Imax version were not available on Blu ray, now I am thinking I prefer the theatrical versions for this reason, and the reason you mentioned in the video. Anyone else experience this.
I keep both verisons if the IMAX version isn't released on bluray. You just gotta have a 77'' or bigger TV and have your watching position close enough so you get an immersive experience.
The framing is done so to immerse the viewer. By making these unmanipulated shots, you feel like you're actually in the scene, because you don't frame a shot when looking at something with your eyes. 1.43, for example, shows the immersivenessnof that format, even on the small screen a 1.43 video is very immersive
Definitely agree with you, I fucking hate the IMAX versions on Disney Plus. With Marvel movies, they're too unartistic and mainstream too truly utilize IMAX so they compose for 2.39 to be shown normally then just slap and the tops and bottom as a marketing tool.
Bro... For me its a choice between black bars vs some extra info... In endgame, when tony died and his daughter was watching his prerecorded msg, there were 2 person standing in the back ground... only in IMAX version, we could see that's thor and captian america....
I just like it because it fills my TV and remove the black bars even if it's useless information......it feels good just like it feels good in imax theatres even if it's not directly visible......I prefer watching movies like Avengers 1 3 4, Ant-man and Shang-Chi on my TV as it has a taller aspect ratio throughout the whole movie.......
Just watched Guardians 1 and 2 in IMAX today and I feel James Gunn used it perfectly and had it with intention instead of "Boss Told me To use IMAX" Loved Doctor Strange first watch need a rewatch and loved Shang Chi in IMAX going to watch Avengers tomorrow and judge it for myself.
It’s interesting having the option to watch the media in this format. I’m all for giving the viewer the choice to experiment. It’s a good feature in my opinion.
I usually prefer a taller aspect ratio for films at home viewing, but wasted negative space os kind of annoying. I'd much prefer the framing to be used accordingly as opposed to use as much of the tv frame as possible, just because it looks cooler. One way to get ahead of this is to frame the IMAX scenes for both theatrical and home viewing with proper space used in the frame. Just look at any Guillermo del Toro film. He uses a slightly taller aspect ratio of 1:85:1 and uses the right amount of space in each frame, with no empty framing at the top of the screen. Also, a 2:35:1 aspect is great. Let's not dismiss it. Some of the best films in history have been filmed in this ratio. Just look at some of your favorite films to see how many have that ratio. All in all, not every film should have the same ratio. It should be utilized according to what the filmmakers had in mind.
What they actually mean is "Shed more dollars in a theatre if we release and re-release the film. You can't get something that good for the petty subscription price you're paying, peasant."
I would rather have empty spaces in frames than black bars or cropped images. I didn't buy expensive 2k 16:9 monitors and hdtvs to see black bars and pretend that 2:39 is more cinematic.
Holy crap I’ve been thinking this ever since they released it, the headroom is always so off, and I was thinking how can I make my films or work have that IMAX enhanced look. By framing worse hahah
I prefer the Imax for the bigger picture but...i do notice the imax/disney plus versions are worse quality than my 4k disks, even the marvel logo at the start of avengers infinity war and endgame have this really bad color banding that my 4k disks dont have thanks to the higher bitrate, its just that typical choice, higher bitate/quality disks, or now more picture but less quality
I can’t speak from a cinema IMAX experience because my local theatre doesn’t offer it. But, watching on a TV just makes the film look cheap. It’s like the soap opera effect for aspect ratios. Let’s be real. Without the massive screen it’s basically just 16:9.
Especially in Superhero movies, i don’t like to see any black bars at all. Why they can’t do it full screen for homes. Because it will make it much better movie. Having 65” 4K tv and black bars on the movie. Waow. Looks awful.
I have a 86 inch tv which i seat 6 feet away from, so imax enhanced is the way to go for me, also im getting a 4k projector and screen soon, so yeah. Ive always hated the black bars thats just my personal preference, and the fact thay disney gives the option to choose aspect is nice.
IMAX enhanced having more vertical space makes for better movies especially for the MCU since superheroes should be shown in a more vertical frame. Zach Snyder did this intentionally with Justic League for the same reason. IMAX enhanced looks a lot better.
I'm just happy to get rid of the annoying black bars without destroying the image and or loosing the image. I have always said why is it so hard to release movies that actually fill your whole screen.
This is a great video and great explanation. I like the imax version as I paid for a big tv and loose all that space. And not everyone has cinemascope screens. Plus I watch movies and play games so cinemascope for games I don't know about that plus games aren't usually that aspect ratio
In my experience it depends on the movie. It works with a lot of Nolan's films because his framing isn't quite as meticulous. He shoots for the big screen anyways and lets the audience do some of the framing themselves. He doesn't seem to shoot with specific shot compositions in mind. Other filmmakers have specific compositions in mind, might even storyboard their entire film for a specific aspect ratio. In those cases the expanded frame just ruins the composition. That's why I'm glad there's no IMAX version on any home release of Dune.
More snobbyness and whining on display here. I bet whiny director only has a 55” television in his little tv room in his compact modern house in the Hollywood hills.
Which version do you prefer?
@Physical media agent the original avengers was shot in 1.85:1 (didn’t know that actually). So the theatrical version wasn’t as wide as the new avengers theatrical versions.

@@christianclark1354There are actually more IMAX Enhanced Disney+ movies with shifting aspect ratios than the ones shown in 1.90:1 in entirety.
@@rutgerrichard5175 Cinemas are dead VOD is the "new cinema". New medium, new format.
@@paracuja
Major film directors could give a rats ass about video on demand (at the moment). More than likely they prefer film for a theater screen than a TV.
Nahh, cinemascope is king, no matter what
@@paracuja
Uhhhh, if the recent box office successes are much to go by, you are very much wrong in that regard.
Because he framed the shots for imax to be shown in that aspect ratio. And both the theatrical and bluray versions are in the same aspect ratio.
I never watched dune in imax cause I don't have an imax near me
Yeah, that was basically just old-school 4:3.
@@jaymz_rg1003 true. But remember, it went from ultrawide then expanded it to 4:3. Tricky to put into the home format unless that ratio is on VR
Literally they cut thor and caps head out of the standard version of Tony’s eulogy it’s maddening
Any thoughts on Zack Snyder's Justice League on HBO Max? presented in 1.43:1 lol
Imax is dope af. Why would anybody complain about expanded scenes
Thank you!
This seems like a rant about head space, no logical reasoning at least to take in consideration!
I love the option to choose over being forced to one or the other. It sucks that physical media doesn't give both options for those that care. 😢
Definitely agree with you, I fucking hate the IMAX versions on Disney Plus. With Marvel movies, they're too unartistic and mainstream too truly utilize IMAX so they compose for 2.39 to be shown normally then just slap and the tops and bottom as a marketing tool.
Imax-enhanced with a big screen TV I love it 💙
I have trouble with the imax to even be imax til half way through the movies. Most the time it's stuck in standard.
2:12 wohhh that seems cool🙁feel like walking in theater lol
I just don't like being left out so I would opt into the IMAX enhanced ver everytime
Cool bonus, but I won’t stop collecting the MCU movies on Blu Ray and 4K discs
DTS audio?
Is it available now?
Good thing 98" Mini-LED TVs are "only" 4000-ish dollars in 2024. Personally, I'm stuffing my M4 iPad Pro OLED an inch from my eyes
Especially in Superhero movies, i don’t like to see any black bars at all. Why they can’t do it full screen for homes. Because it will make it much better movie. Having 65” 4K tv and black bars on the movie. Waow. Looks awful.
I can’t stand when people say they prefer home theaters versus actual going to a movie theater
What's the issue?
Why? It’s just personal preference, you don’t need to get mad 😂
Eh, theater is better imo but it has more distractions and you can't pause the movie
I’d rather see more of the movie than two black bars.
It's 2023, it's about time they come out with something that fits the massive tv I paid for. I hate black bars
I'm just happy to get rid of the annoying black bars without destroying the image and or loosing the image. I have always said why is it so hard to release movies that actually fill your whole screen.
I've a 150" curved screen and IMAX enhanced version do make it more immersive
Disney imax vs the non imax has 0 difference. Same with Sony's Bravia app there's literally no difference. It's a marketing gimmick.
I’d still watch Imax Enhanced despite the empty headroom, feels more comfortable
I don't buy a Tv so 30in of it can be black bars
I loved imax ENHANCED i actually want every movie in imax ratio
I do feel with imax certain parts of the film should be in imax to give the viewer and exiting scene the best person who did this was Michael Bay
I might be late at this but having something instead of Black bars is actually better IMO.
Im tired of black bars. We have big screens. I dont care if nothing’s going on up and down there. Let me see it.
That's why I'm glad there's no IMAX version on any home release of Dune.
as long as you have the choice where’s the problem??
Give me headroom over black bars any day
Bad audio too
I don’t like those black bars in the movies.
I got a large TV so looking at the imax in 4k hdr with Dolby audio Built in, looks very nice 🤗
They even look better on a 21:9 phone or display
Bro on a 75" the imax enhace is amazing
2:1 also looks great on smart phones
I just wish the whole
Movie would be in 1:9:1
AWFUL FRAMING OF IMAX? BUT WHY?
2:39 2:40
More snobbyness and whining on display here. I bet whiny director only has a 55” television in his little tv room in his compact modern house in the Hollywood hills.
No one notices that
