This is a masterpiece, period. And the chorus is simply gorgeous, gets me every time.

Very sad time for the band and their fans (passengers) with the loss of David, but great review! Thanks! They are indeed “musical painters” - great phrase - and they use that ability to tell stories of which there are more details in their album covers and their website. More please! Try the track “East Coast Racer”. Cheers!

This is my favorite song ever. A true masterpiece. David is already sorely missed.

A Mead Hall In Winter is a terrific ensemble song you will enjoy., the live version on You Tube is ace. The Second Brightest Star is different but beautiful. I never thought I would find a band that gave me the same vibe as early Yes and Genesis did in the 70’s.Five years ago when I discovered the, band through You Tube videos I immediately tried to find out if I could see them live. Since them I have seen them at Cadogan Hall, London, in Basingstoke and in Newport and have lapped up,back catalogue and new albums. They are a complete tour de force and and it’s an immensely emotional event to see them live. David has been integral to the sound of the band both instrumentally, vocally and through his songwriting. One of the amazing things they do is to meet their fans after gigs and I have briefly spoken to David at each one and at a premiere of a live dvd at a cinema. He was always humble turning the conversation to thank you for coming. The world has lost a bright star and a lovely human being.

I was heartbroken hearing about Longdon's death. I only discovered them early this year and they instantly became my favorite retro-prog band, and one of my favorite prog bands period. English Electric (the 2-disc "Full Powered" version) is probably my favorite prog album of the 2010s, with nearly every track being no less than superb. The Underfall Yard was the album they released just before English Electric, and it's the album where I think BBT went from being a decent prog band to one of the best on the planet, and they've been consistently excellent ever since then. This title track and Victorian Brickwork from the same album (one of my old special selections) are two of my absolute favorite BBT songs. RIP to one of the greatest and most underrated musicians of this century.
BTW Bryan, I'd be more than happy to fill in any gaps in special selections for a Longdon/BBT week. Looking at the Special Selection list looks like there's two other BBT's after this. If you want to to wait and do BBT week next week I could wait until the end of the week to see if anyone wants to make any other BBT Special Selections themselves and then just do enough to fill out the week.

The Wide Open Sea would be a great follow up to this. Such a masterful performance from David. Very emotional singing and different instrumentation.

Again the live version is an absolute killer - nobody does impressionistic texture like this band and until STONE AND STEEL Greg wasn’t totally convinced that this stuff was playable live. Up until that moment they were very much a studio band. See the documentary on TH-cam it’s fascinating.

Its about building the world's longest railway tunnel at the time, the loss of many men, the landscape, the greatness of the project. You'd most certainly enjoy BBT (also meaning Big Bang Theory, they're playing around in many layers) even more after watching their video, Stone And Steel, here on TH-cam. At least I did, and thank you for understanding so much of it right away. David'll reveal his own favourite song during the video

FYI, David Longdon was almost Phil Collin's replacement in Genesis. It came down to him and Ray Wilson.

That's interesting. I saw he played flute and keyboard alongside singing. Certainly a talented musician.

If you dont already have it on your list, then I'd recommend the BBT song 'Victorian Brickwork' live at Kings Place, London (2015)

I've listened to some really bizarre stuff on here and have been stumped a few times as well. I'm always down for a challenge and, if I fail to grasp it, I'm open to learn as well. I'll keep this Slint song in mind.
