Cold War kind of had that but all the new cods besides that have been trying way too hard to be ultra realistic which is why people complain about these cosmetics. If they had stuck to their roots instead of trying to appeal to the milsim community they'd be much better off. Its why I think XDefiant will do well, because ever since CoD left the arcade space to become "ultra realistic" that part of the shooter genre has been sort of left open

About what you mentioned about specialists being cool because you can play as who you choose regardless of what team you're on. I respect that along with operators. But I honestly miss it where you just play as regular soldiers. Like the CIA, FBI, Navy Seals, Mercs, Wehrmacht, Red Army, Inner Circle, Spetsnaz, NVA, Tropas, SAS. The list goes on but factions just made the matches feel alot more appealing and immersive despite the game being an arcadey shooter. And you gotta admit, the factions brought to the table badass intro, outro themes and announcer voicelines. I wish modern cods would bring this back. Highly doubt it though cuz Activision is stinky poopoo
