  • KTM FRONT WHEEL REMOVAL - Many will know how to do this; this video is for those that don't. An easy job, but take care of the front ABS rotor when lifting the front of the bike on the paddock stand. Re-assembly is just the reverse. I'm heading off to Europe now camping for 6-8 weeks. Fresh tyres (Angel GT's) and fully loaded. Trip video, tyre wear, handling feedback all to follow. If you want to see, please subscribe. x
    Torque settings (From workshop manual):
    Axle Spindle (large screw) 12mm Allen = 45nm (33.2 lbf ft) H12)
    Front Axle Bolt {M25} = 45 nm (33.2 lbf ft)
    Brake Caliper {M10} = 45 nm (33.2 lbf ft)
    Speed Sensor {M6} = 4 nm (3 lbf ft)
    Axle Clamp Screws {M8} (2 each side) = 15 nm (11.1 lbf ft)
    Manual says use Loctite 243 but I use any "medium strength" threadlock.

    Good video, just don't use torq wrench to losen bolts, you will lose calibration soon. Torq wrench should be used only for final tightening.

    • @KevKam
      @KevKam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Justin. Yes a couple have said that. but never explained why. I never thought about the calibration. I think it's ok when the bolts are not overtightened or corroded in, but i can see how excessive undoing force will defo put the calibration out. Thanks.
      I find my white tippex marks are very useful to align the bolts and for a quick visual when on tour.

      @@frankerckThe R is super sexy. I'd have one as well if i could afford to keep 3 bikes. I've toured 3,000 miles on my naked Honda CB1000 - hotels, not camping so much less luggage, so it can be done. We are all so different; height, weight, physicality, comfort depends on what you've been used to. Limited luggage aside, the only issue i experienced on the naked over distance was neck ache from not having a screen to deflect wind. So once you've sourced a rear rack, panniers perhaps check out a touring screen? Good luck. Ping me a vid/pic link if you do pimp the R for distance, be interesting to see. :)

    The repair manual doesn’t mention the sensor, can it be done without removing the sensor?

    • @KevKam
      @KevKam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good Q... The sensor cable on my GT is routed with the l/h side brake calliper, but can easily be unclipped by removing the plastic clips holding it to the hydraulic brake line. This will give more freedom to move it when the calliper is removed (in order to remove the wheel), so technically (i think) the answer is YES the calliper can potentially be removed without disconnecting the sensor, but iv'e not done it. My rationale... :) ...The sensor is so easy to remove, it then makes 'hanging' the calliper easier too and it gives the chance to clean and inspect it. If you don't have 'comedy sausage fingers' :) and are reasonably deft with moderate hand eye co-ordination. don't be worried about taking it out, lol. Let me know if you try it, if it's easy to to it without removing it, maybe i'll try that next time. (y)

    What's your tire of choice for the SDR?

    • @KevKam
      @KevKam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Sorry i can’t give you any useful tyre comparisons as I’ve stuck with the Pirelli Angel GT’s, but I’ll try and be useful. Rear tyre wear is so dependant on how you ride i really don’t think any tyre would last long on this beast if you like to use the power. I get 2,500 from a rear if i rag it, but then nearly 4000 if I’m fully loaded and touring. Always get another 1500 more from the front than the rear but that’s normal for this bike. I’ve passed 18,000 in nearly 3 years. Mainly touring in Europe and general fun in UK. I read tyre reviews sometimes but unless the author includes their riding style and weight it’s not comparable. I’m 11.5 stone, 5ft 11 and love the twisties more than straight lines.
      I do like a ‘soft sticky’ tyre, but on this beast. I just can’t afford to replace a rear every 1500 which I think would be the case for me with a softer sport rubber. Have you found a favourite tyre for yours?

      Both mine are made by Constands and work well, but I never use just the front stand on its own. Think I paid less than the link price but it’s the first Constant one I found that look s very similar. It’s possible the “headlift” front stands are just as good but I’ve not tried them. Thanks Micky. You will love the power (173 bhp). The handling and the extras like, the screen, heated grips, electronic suspension, tank size (23litres) make this the most fully equipped bike i've ever owned. The luggage options make it perfect for long touring with a tent. Test ride one. KTM often do BIG end of year discounts when a new model or upgrade comes out. I got a great deal with mine, it was end of year and the demo bike (less than 100 miles on clock if i recall). Would i recommend one? On paper and after riding it so far, YES. But i reserve final judgement till i'm back end of August/September, hoping to do 5,000+ miles so it should be a great test of machine, tyre wear and my abilities. I'll let you know. :D
