I had a birth at a birthing centre. Was induced by the midwife using some drug that also accelerated my labour. The baby was in distress but she was forcing me to push when I was not even fully dilated. I fought her to take me to hospital and when I got there I was told I had to get an emergency C-section. If I hadn’t fought her my baby would have died. 😢

Government hospitals should be investigated too with regards to their maternity units they cause women so much trauma during birth which is why majority of us opt for private midwives or homebirths

Home births must be prohibited 🚫 period based on the facts that high death rates of babies, 2 unprofessional let alone not too qualified for emergencies that may arise during birth! Lastly birth at hospital the baby and the mother can be saved as they won't be need to be traveling incase of any kind of situation that mat arise😢

Many mothers and babies die in hospital too. My eldest almost died due to negligence from a nurse not checking on us nor paying any attention when i said something was wrong. My husband ran looking for help if another sister didn't come running with him we would both not have made it. The girl that was in labour next to me almost died.. actually I don't know if she made it. Machines were going off and the same nurse ignored her she had eclampsia and had fits. They had to get the baby out asap. after her husband also ran for help the nurse told her to calm down WHILE she was having fits. By the time we were released 2 days later she was still in a coma. This was at the best high risk public hospital in Cape Town. Where there are strict rules as to checking on patient. So it's not about the hospital or the midwivery you go to it's the people working there. Some are amazing some have no business doing this. Just like i cant blame the hospital for one nurse that was not in the mood to do her job that night you cant blame a whole industry for 1 or 2 bad apples

@stacey-leehattingh6957 Am looking at the fact these midwives have been reported and cartblanche been airing this for so long and still these women are carrying out home births even after their licenses have been revoked, they not jail! All those babies died senseless deaths which could have been prevented, saved when they were in hospitals! Mind you these women are not doctors! I would rather risk it with hospital than home birth, as like you saying negligence of a nurse , 1 pursue and sue that's if they have the resources, money but very unfortunate for those who can't.

@@lindarakobe6527 not arguing with your stance. But remember CB has done segments on hospitals as well that had similar situations... Should those hospitals also be closed down? Proper midwives also go for extensive training. Just like the hospital staff , take action against those committing the crimes. There are amazing midwives and nurses out there we can't punish everyone we need to do something about the rogue ones... Which is hard when the counsil does nothing but then the people that work as bad in hospital also did not get much repercussions... Just saying don't through the baby out with the bath water

This is very scary. I was induced at Kathleens mother and baby clinic.
Not only that but i had severe Hyperemesis Gravidarum and the one midwife working there told me to just take a walk and ill feel better. Also told me im so ill because my body isnt accepting the pregnancy. I went to a private doctor who told me my son was measuring small and i was severely dehydrated and my ketones were very high. All was ignored at Kathleens. I still gave birth there as i did not have medical aid and was desperate to avoid the government hospital during COVID.
Its scary to know that this could have been my babies fate.

Midwives are cheaper than private hospitals. A decent service from a registered midwife can cost roughly 15k. In private its about 25k upwards. Aftercare and routine immunizations after birth is also costly with some sessions costing anywhere between R 500 to R2000. In all honesty a State hospital works out better money-wise.

What I dont understand is these stories of shady birth centres and so on is not new its there has been many that warned people but to be mothers still use them instead of a hospital, i just dont understand how are birth centres better then a hospital with real doctors and equipment to deal with any situation. If people stop using these places they will soon not be any birth centres open and everyone would be happier. Stop home birth or whatever its meant to be and use a hospital. I hope those mothers are in a better space now.

Midwives study years to be able to practice. They are incredibly well trained. In South Africa they train first as nurses and then specialize as midwives. I practice in Netherlands, and 70%+ of our women birth at home without complications. Homebirth is also recommended by our government. Homebirths are safe, but nothing is safe when people are only after money and don't stick to their scope.
