My mum was English. When she passed 10 years ago, I took in her 17year old grey. He speaks with both British and American accents. My Mum's picture is on the mantel. When my parrot is mad at me, he sits next to her picture and says, "I want mum. " I tell him I do too, lol.
We have friends who live in the Netherlands who have a parrot that speaks English and Dutch.
I like that she talks about how it's a big commitment. I hope people realize this before getting any pet. They are living creatures and not stuffed animals who deserve a lifetime of caring devotion to their well-being.

Totally agree with you
Yes definitely. I realised this the hard way. My family's parrot was not getting enough stimulation and proper attention for a time. He started plucking himself on his belly and to this day its difficult getting him to grow back all the feathers he had before. They're not like small budgies where they can be in a cage all day. To be honest I actually find dogs to be far easier to take care of than parrots.
I had an African Gray , his Name was Mozart . He was 17 Years old , when suddenly he died for no reason , I am so heartbroken . He was so intelligent spoke 3 lungage , English , German , Africaans . I miss him so much he was my Baby
and they can live up to 60 - 70 years also !
I've had Bailey 23 years now. We purchased her from a bird store shortly after she was born. She started making some odd sounds around the one year mark so we called the vet. We told the vet it sounded like she was sneezing or coughing but no mucus was near her beak and no sickness seemed obvious. The vet suggested maybe we should bring her in for a check up followed by asking how we were doing. My husband replied, "Annette and I are just getting over colds"...and then we laughed. We realized Bailey was mimicking us..and maybe she would be talking to us soon! Too funny!
Another story...
When we were happily married my husband would come home from work and greet me with "Hi honey, I'm home! Where are you?" Well, before we knew it, Bailey picked the phrases up and would say them even before my husband had a chance to say them. It seemed to me that Bailey took great pleasure in beating him to the punch. My husband and I are divorced now. Bailey lives with me and does not see my ex-husband. Bailey does not say those phrases anymore! I have tried to prompt him at times and he looks at me and remains mute!!!

I've had our AG for almost 23 years, I know how it is.ours has outlived a few dogs that she talked to..When one dies she never says that dogs name again...Every year when we put up the Christmas tree she says ho ho ho Merry Christmas until we take it down, we have to wait a year to hear it again.. one of my favourite things she says is...Hey I'm talking to you!!!
What a powerful story about your bird and dogs. They are truly brilliant and emotional. Best to you.
gail LeDuc - so cute. Our African Grey meets a dog or person and then NEVER forgets their name...we hear it for years even if she has only met them a few times! And when our dogs die, she says their names for years afterward. 🙁
it's not fair that dogs live such short lives!
Most all parrots will keep saying a dogs name for years and years after fhe dog is gone if they were very attached and said there name for years. its odd she just stops
Same here. When I would take out my Mother’s table top Christmas Tree, Marley would say, “Merry Christmas “. For eighteen years he would introduce the holiday with the sight of tree. And say it only once a year.
Speaking as a grey owner of nearly two decades: These birds are people. Their intellect may be a little primitive compared to our own, but they are a people completely distinct from ourselves and their way of living and thinking is not always aligned with our own. They aren't pets that you buy, they're difficult children that you adopt into your family.
Don't get a grey unless you're prepared to be outlived by a flying toddler with frequently inscrutable thoughts and motivations.

...But personhood as a concept isn't especially well-defined, so there will always be differences of opinion.

thats my fear of getting one is what do I do when I get old or sick. It seems so unfair to the bird
Being a good, responsible pet owner ( or ownee, if you have Greys !!! ) is always far more work than most people realize. Parrots are an order of magnitude higher. In my experience, very, very few people should even consider getting a parrot.
I've had my Grey April for 18 years after her first owner ( a very good owner, I must add ) passed away. During that time I have had exactly one vacation away from her, because there are very, very few people I trust to take care of her properly. And every time I think I have got it down and am doing a good job, I learn of something better I should be doing !
The cost in money, time, labor, and effort in owning a parrot is truly huge. The rewards are even greater.

I don't think you own pets. They are not things(no matter what the moronic law says). You become their parents.
So true. They usually only bond with one person; you can kiss vacations goodbye if you get a Grey.
So many parrot owners thought "omg! so cute! I want a talking pet!" but aren't willing to do any of the work it requires and ultimately fail. I hate those people. Compulsive, selfish and lazy. They're why animal shelters are filled beyond capacity

A lot of pets can be a lot more demanding than a lot of people think. I have been a rat owner for over 10 years now, and so many think it's just another rodent in a cage, but they need so much care and attention. Again like having a child in the house!
@@lozzylols Rats are actually really demanding animals, and no one realizes it. You get a snake, you clean their enclosure like once a month. With rats you basically have to wash their cloth everyday.
So many animal owners. I rescue dogs that get dumped. People want a cure talking doll, not a living God created being that has needs. Yes dog's bark and they have to go to the bathroom, they need walks. These birds live longer than you usually, they are a lifetime of commitment. The return from any of these is unmeasurable

Love the parrots' southern accent! I lived in Tennessee for 5 years as a teen, and now rarely hear one. Hearing it from Jake and Sophie is s delight!

My female Macaw is a total tattle tail... says "Kona eh ehh ehhh!" When Kona is being naughty. Sophie is GORGEOUS!!!

Jake and Sophie are beautiful birds! I have never owned a parrot, but did have a little yellow budgie as a teenager. She lived to be 15 years old and while she never talked, she sang and whistled beautifully. My heart's desire was to have an African Grey, but as I'm now 63 and have no one to leave a parrot to after I'm gone, it's just not feasible. I have to get my "parrot fix" by watching parrot videos, which I do every day.I am now adding Jake and Sophie to my list of favorite birds on TH-cam! 💕

This is so funny, and amazing. I didn’t ever think I would hear a parrot with a southern accent! So funny. Yes, these creatures are a huge commitment. They live long and require a great deal of care and maintenance.

I very much enjoyed this video. Wish there were more. I have an AG and her name is Vicky. She is a handful and lets me know what she wants. I have learned that in the morning time she wants to get out of the cage by herself with no help from "that hand attached to my owner" because she will push my hand away with her beak and NOT step up! When she wants food she stands near her food bowl and just does a two-note whistle over and over again until I get her food...she even does it while I am refilling her food bowl! She likes her nighttime kiss through the cage and says "mmmm" while we are kissing. I love her so much that I guess you could say she has me wrapped around her little gray wing!

we had a cockatiel and he was funny....my brother taught him the bomber and he would also sit on the top of the light protector and poop and laugh as it fell.we had him about 7 years and then one day I forgot that he was out and opened the door for just a minute and out he flew.We loved him and the person who got him after I told her what he would and could do..said well, I can't give him to you unless you know the number that is on the band on his leg,which I didn't know.He was a wonderful and sweet bird.I love the way your sweeties are comfortable and happy looking.Thank you for sharing your sweeties!

I have a Congo African grey too. His name is max. Hes 19 I've had him since he was a baby. Parrots are a huge LIFETIME commitment.

My little Senegal parrot loved watching this. He doesn't talk as much as an AG, but he can be chatty! I adopted him about 10 years ago. He imitates some of my phrases, in my Southern drawl. Cracks me up when he says, "Thayt's Riyght!" and he sounds like me. Parrots are awesome, but need lots of attention.

Loved this video. My mom has two AG's and I plan to inherit them someday. I watch videos from time to time to prepare myself. I'm already planning a bird room for our forever home. One of the AG's is only a baby :-)

When I was a kid some friends of my family had the police banging on the door one night at 2am.
The cop had just arrested a local drug addict who had admitted he had broken into a house, but the house had a psycho inside who was going to murder the family.
The robber said he had broken into the house and out of the darkness he heard an "evil voice" say, "I see you. ha ha ha" it wasn't laughing, it actually said, "ha ha ha"
Well, he wasn't going to stick around, he just ran away, but he was worried about the family in the house so he flagged down a cop, knowing he'd be arrested, but he felt he had no choice to save the family.
The "psycho" turned out to be their African Grey who liked to play "hide and seek" with the lights out.
The story had a happy ending. The judge considered the man's actions and offered to have the man sentenced to rehab rather than jail. He got off, and stayed off of drugs.
Frankly, I think he had a great story as to how he decided to quit doing drugs.
Yeah, RIGHT!!! That's exactly what this is, a "story."

When my parrot died, after 3 days of not talking & during his life he did put words together to make his point & situations, pottie trained himself, very intelligence, not just 'parroting'...so after 3 days of not talking, with his last breath he said to me (I'd had him cuddled to my neck), he said, "I love you" & exhaled his last breath. Yes, animals are a lot smarter than humans may believe...imagine if their brains were larger...hmmmm, they have feelings too...💕..I miss him so much...HUGS2U

@@marybetsy Guy was soooo way too cool. I loved all my pets but Guy taught me a lot because he could make his point verbally & communicate. My present pet, 15# dog, I've taught language to as well...& he knows all his body parts, left from right (as did Guy & others) about 225 commands, & I try to keep in mind that he is a gray wolf in disguise & has feelings so I encourage him too to be who he is. I don't OWN him, he's my roomy & it's my job to love him...it's his job to let me...HUGS2U

Feathered babies is a common word in our home, we have 4 rescues 2 macaws, an amazon and a ecletus and it’s a lot of work taking care of them but can be so rewarding at the same time.

An African Grey is not a beginner's choice! There is so much to consider. while owning a bird, the bird also owns you. It is a lifelong commitment that is truly rewarding for those who are up to the task
My african grey dances with me. ❤️ my grey also tells the robot vacuum to go lay down. Go to go lay down. Git git go go go. Lol. He is 17 years old and I’ve had him him since a hatchling.

I've never owned a bird myself but my aunt had budgies and a cockatiel which took a great amount of time, patience, love and understanding. You cannot just leave a bird inside it's cage and never interact with them. You have to take care of them as if they were toddler's. Like she said in the video and many of the commenters if you can't provide this everyday for the life time of the bird then DO NOT GET ONE BECAUSE YOU THINK IT'S CUTE.
This video is just another reminder of how smart little furry and feathered creatures can be.

Nice video , but I would have liked to see more and hear more from the birds. AG's are very demanding birds , perhaps a little more than other breeds. I have 2 kids , and I found that our 2 parrots were much harder work than my kids were . I love your feathered babies , they are adorable . Thank you for sharing them............I also hope that people are aware that these birds live for a LONG time , and it is a HUGE commitment to take on , as rewarding as it is , it is VERY hard work......xxx

We currently have a very colorful cockatiel named Perry. He gabs away and loves people and attention. He is also a great talker and can mimic just about anything. We have owned cockatoos in the past and found it a very rewarding experience. These birds make wonderful pets but anyone contemplating buying one must understand that with ownership comes commitment to give the bird attention and love. If you do your part you will be rewarded by your bird many times over.

Spot on for African Greys--I've had parrots for 40 years, my Grey for 15. Just an aside, I
make a hobby of identifying southern accents (I'm from Florida, we don't count) so, here goes....hate to get it wrong: Tennessee?

Can relate to everything you’ve said. Had African Grey 18 years. Yes, very entertaining. Marley could say three pages of a legal pad. Very spontaneous with conversation and engage with laughter. Miss Marley, but not the clean up.

Yes they form their own sentences. A put a new toy outside mines cage because he gets scared easily by new thing. My bird said “what that is” amazing!

Great video and very well done! I’m so glad you brought up the importance of commitment. Most people don’t know that 85% of parrots are given away, resold, or abandoned within the first two years of ownership. Most people will buy a parrot based on watching TH-cam videos and think to themselves “ how cute, let’s get a bird”. They don’t understand the amount of time, attention, and training needed to get a bird to that point. Many expect birds to automatically talk. Even though some species are known for their speaking ability, some may not talk at all (there is no guarantee any bird will talk). Parrots have the cognitive ability of a 3 to 5 year old child. Yes, they are that intelligent. Scientifically this means that most parrots are about 30 to 40 times smarter than a typical dog or cat. Consequently you need to be prepared to spend several hours of one on one time with your parrots just as you would with a 3 to 5 year old child. Also, be prepared cleanup after them the same way you would a child. Be ready to be in the kitchen and prepare and cook certain foods for your parrots daily as well. I have Eclectus Parrots which are slightly larger than the African Grey. They are also known for their speaking ability. I can tell you that if you put the effort into these beautiful creatures, your rewards will be great. They are the most loving and communicative and bonded pets you can possibly have. While I love all animals, I always say, “If you thing a dog is man’s best friend, you have never encountered a parrot”. Have a great day everyone.
