Polo the reason why they sound different is evolution. The Who is a 60s English Band. They were part of the English Invasion. And like the Stones, the Who evolved with each passing decade. You are now listening to 80s Who.

Also the guitarist Pete Townsend is doing the vocals in this one while most of their originals had the frontman Rodger Daltrey singing.

My first time was the Who Are You tour, '80 I think ($15 general admission, a week after the Cleveland tragedy)... half the staff where I worked went to the show, boss said he couldn't spare me, I went anyway. Skipped school but went there anyway to pick up some doobage and got kicked out by my first hour teacher...LOL... Was an awesome day. Listened to the show on the way home too! WRIF did a tape delay broadcast. Last memory of that night was the parking lot where our group met to carpool to the show, stereo blasting out live "the Who" and us playing air guitar jumping off the top of dumpsters (as if they were Marshall stacks) doing Pete's windmill. Good times!

I tapped on this video as fast as I could. I KNEW you would absolutely love it. The song was a bit controversial among many of The Who's fans for being disco-ish, but I don't care what anybody labels this song; I just label it as being one of the greatest songs this band ever did. The groove is strong and undeniable, Pete Townsend sings with such soul and conviction, his guitar playing is subtle and amazing, and overall this song just rocks extremely steady.
All of the major British invasion bands of the 60s, beginning (of course) with The Beatles, majorly expanded their initial sounds way beyond what anyone could have predicted for any of them. Even the Rolling Stones, who have remained remarkably stable in their music, have expanded their sound big-time at various times in their legendary 60+ year career. As I've been saying now for many years, Americans invented Rock and Roll, but the British perfected it. It's been absolutely wonderful.

I was living in a fraternity house in college and the guy next door to my room played this song in a loop all day - for like 6 months. He blew out his stereo twice as played it very loud. I fixed his stereo each time so he could keep playing it - never got sick of it.

The reason this song sounds different from the others you did by The Who is Pete Townshend (lead guitar and composer) is singing the lead on thios one. Roger Daltrrey, the bands lead singer did the vocals on the other ones you did. Also, Kenny Jones is the drummer on this. He replaced Keith Moon who passed away after the Who Are You album.

This is the genius of Pete Townshend! As production and sound systems improved from the 1960’s into the 1980’s as this song was done in the early’89’s, Pete was able to add deeper synths and other instruments!

SO MANY,but Join Together With The Band has a special vibe for me,reminds of the beauty that got away as she loved it,I love it too.
Also,5.15 by them, and as for live, the set they did at Leeds,England in 1970 is legendary and it’s legendary for the unique sound they got from that venue and the pure energy in every song.
*must be the deluxe version though The Who Live at Leeds.
One of the top 3 live albums in history imo.

Ah! One of my most favourite The Who songs. So glad you reviewed it. Wait until you hear the rock opera Tommy.

I remember my cousin and I listening to this in 1979 smoking bud and we concluded he was saying "living in a spud", lol. It's still one of my favorite songs.

Went down your rabbit hole of "first" reactions, and I am SO happy you are doing The Who!! Highly recommend Jethro Tull Aqualung and Edgar Winter Frankenstein. Blackfoot, Train Train.

I've been hearing this song for 40 years but when I hear it now it will forever remind me of when I stole a motorcycle and explored San Andreas for the first time. It was nighttime, and it started to rain...

I was fortunate enough to see The Who 4x. Twice this century, twice last. Managed to see Keith Moon one time and Entwistle twice.

I didn't even need to watch this, I saw the song and was already like... you're going to love the opening groove to this song. It's so damn infectious. Great reaction man.

This one sounds a little different because it’s early 80’s and also because Pete Townshend is singing lead instead of Roger Daltrey. You should check out some of Pete’s solo stuff like Rough Boys and Slit Skirts. He’s pretty much a musical genius and one of the coolest rock guitarists ever.
