@@ramos_pinho117 The best use for them outside of siege battles is this IMO: Pikemen units for the center of a line, heavy infantry for the flanks, then cavalry to harass any ranged units who may try to shoot at them or your own ranged units. Then I like to have some vanguard units to break the center before rushing the backline to get rid of ranged units, that way I usually end up killing most worrying enemies before I sustain major damage.
I always did cavalry +archers or crossbowmen when you put cavalry wings more to the front the enemy will happily stop in shooting range and just wait there waiting for your move. Do you get you Pikes to hold position? In Roman, your phalanx hold formation when going forward. In medieval, your unit loses cohesion as they don't all move forward in one step. I think the pikes are primarily defensive.
Force sure, they are a lot more defensive in M2TW. You have to micro them a lot in this game compared to Rome, but by clicking attack then hold position they will stay in place, but keep using their Pikes. Now there is a way to fix it in the game files, however Im not very good at modifying games files and tend to break stuff lol. But there are other videos that can help show how to do it right so you can get the Pikemen working well.
Third age Total war Divide and Conquer resolved this issue by removing the swords from pike units altogether. This made pikes one of the the deadliest units in the game.
Or just put them on guard mode. What hurts pikemen is the length of the pike it's too short when people hear Pikemen they think of the Phalangists of Macedon and the Seleucids but theyre actually more similar to Hoplites. They have all the same issues that Hoplites have.
True, pikes are normally 20ft long if I remember right and where usually supported with ranks of muskets. Unfortunately in this games neither one of these units are all that well done. I would love for a Pike and Shot era game, but I don't think CA has any interest in making one.
2 units of pikeman WILL hold a city street, makes the unit usable even in end game. if i can shut down 1 street in its entirety, i can leverage my tactics around them
It makes them hold, however they will still swap over to their sidearm for some reason. Its a bug in the game that most mods do fix and can also be fixed by going into the games files. However I'm not very good at changing game files so I started doing this and noticed that it worked.
I think the devs intentionally broke the phalanx ai, wanted more focus on the expanding of arms and historical relevancy. Was too strong in rome 1 to just make a big ass phalanx wall and set and forget while you micro your missiles and cav. They wanted to get people to actually micro managing more of the army. Medieval 2 DISC gold edition: Pikemen are very tedious to use. Rarely a good investment unless you have no other options. More often than not, They can’t stop moving and plant their pikes before the infantry or cavalry hits them. If they are staying still in formation, the enemy rarely attacks them. Instead attacking all other units. AND on the rare occasion they DO charge the pikemen, half the time the game bugs out and they don’t die. They just endlessly charge, sometimes up to a minute. The pikes switch to their swords more often than not, and they can only attack what is directly in front of them. Poor morale. Ineffective on a hill. I once had a town militia unit, ONE dude, get to the side of my noble pikemen, and he killed 8 of them before they finally killed him. 🙄 Swedish pikemen are VERY good though.👌🏻👌🏻
