My father graduated in 1944 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis and was fought in the Pacific against Japan on a destroyer as a Gunnery Officer. He was an avid historian on WWI & II. He didn’t say much about the war but he always commented on Germany and the fact that Nazism was alive and well following the war. As a teenager growing up in the 70’s I thought he was a little touched. Now as a young man in my early 60’s👍, I should have listened closer to him when he spoke. He passed in the mid 90’s in his early 70’s. He is sorely missed.

About 24 years ago I met an elderly German women, here in New Zealand. She was in her late 70s or early 80s.
Alert active and friendly she and I got to know each other over the coming years. She mentioned she and her family moved from Germany and lived in Brazil after ww2. Her father and brothers were in Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. And knew him and were part of his bodyguard.
I was a little surprised by this revelation and she explained they had to get out of Europe. Lovely women and we always got on well and she didn’t blink an eyelid when I told her about my Jewish background. I felt no grudge against her and she was appalled at what had transpired in ww11. We were simply two human beings whose paths happened to cross at a point in time.

One curious piece of trivia about Josef Mengele, is that after he died in Brazil, He was buried in the town of Embu das Artes, in an unmarked grave, very close to where I live. He was then exhumated in 1985 for proper identification after the brazillian federal police intercepted letters from his family in Brazil to the Mengele family in Germany, informing them of his death. After the exhumation, his remains sat unclaimed in the São Paulo Institute for Forensic Medicine until 2016, when it was transferred to the São Paulo University as an educational aid for medicine students. I guess they finally found a use for him after all, Terrific video as always Dr. Felton.

For those of us who lived during the Cold War and would listen to shortwave radio services like Radio Berlin International, and Radio Moscow, histories like this were common. A common argument of the Warsaw Pact/USSR was that the Western Alliance was really run by NAZIs and would lead the listeners to believe that any military action taken by the Warsaw Pact against NATO would at its root be a continuation of WW2 to finish the job. We hear echoes of this argument to this day with Russia vs Ukraine/NATO.

The metal gear solid series of games has a sort of alternate history time line. A group called the Patroits formed after ww2, creating a slush fund to invest in both sides of forever wars. It really isn't so farfetched. Even if you aren't a gamer I encourage you to watch some storyline videos. The second game touches on AI and it is weird how on the mark Kojima was.

@@Karpp1nenYes, they were. And the same was true for East Germany. Both versions of Germany needed to be governed. The NVA was the logical conclusion of the Nazi Wehrmacht. The NVA continued all the traditions of the original German army with no shame. If the Warsaw Pact did invade NATO to wipe out Nazism in the West, they would have done it with goosestepping Prussian style super soldiers who were trained in the same way as the armies of the NAZI's. The NAZIs knew how to run Germany, the allies -all of them including the Soviets- needed and used them to their ends.

I have often wondered how the smartest people on the face of the earth at the time were led down the path to total destruction leaving 60 million dead in their wake. They followed a sociopath, in company with others with a flair for drama, showmanship, pageantry and captivating speeches right into the toilet. We are, in slow motion experiencing it now here in real time. The angry young man has become fashionable. Everybody that does not look like them or agree with them is a danger. Dr. Felton, I have a serious question for you, if I may. As there is only so much data regarding any subject, how are you able to continue coming up with new & intriguing documentaries about WW2? On a side note, I am a huge WW2 European Theater nut & I have been a massive fan of your work for a very long time. You always ask the right questions & provide logical & factual explanatory answers. I honestly have never watched one of your videos & left with any unanswered questions. How you don't have a show on the Discovery Channel or BBC is beyond me (truth be told it's a crime!). Respect, unwavering support, immense gratitude & love always from the USA my friend! 😇 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸

Democratic nations usually have a period after which top secret documents are declassified and made available to scholars and researchers to study, the length of the period depends on the nation and the documents in question. Documents have been released after 70 or 150 years. Some particularly sensitive documents are never released. Documents concerning Ultra were never meant to be released, the British and Americans wanted to keep them secret indefinitely, but after its existence was exposed they relented and allowed historians access.

The Nazis didn't flee to South America. We gave them first class tickets to America and then gave them high-level positions in every single government agency we had at the time.

The movie The Boys from Brazil was based on a novel of the same name written two years earlier by Ira Levin (who also wrote Rosemary’s Baby and The Stepford Wives), not The Odessa File. I’ve read it. It was actually better than the movie.

Whilst still being generally awful. The dialogue, which is the meat & potatoes of the book, reminded me of a bad Stephen King novel. (Before you say it, they're not all bad lol...)
