"The Hitchhiker" [remastered] ORSON WELLES - SUSPENSE Radio's Best Episodes

  • ABOUT THE Hitchhiker: This is Orson Welles at his best . . . This guy REALLY WAS a creative genius. The Hitchhiker (written by Lucille Fletcher) was done previously on his Mercury Theater, and 20 years later became a well remembered Twilight Zone episode. Now, 60 years after the Twilight Zone, and 80 years after the Suspense broadcast, here's The Hitch-Hiker with the audio all cleaned up and remastered to near perfection! While listening, you'll have to remind yourself that it's an 80 year old recording from1942! These shows were performed live, and we're lucky they had the foresight to record these. Think of the tens of thousands of hours of programs back then that were broadcast just once . . . then gone forever. We missed some really good stuff. After the program you'll hear a pitch from Orson Welles for U.S. War Bonds, which paid a damn good return! We'll never, ever have such original and creative entertainment like Suspense. There's almost 900 episodes that still exist . . Like any series some episodes aren't very good, but you won't hear those on my channel. I'm uploading only the best stories here, always in the best sound quality!

    Orson Welles is a genius!! I love listening to old time radio dramas and comedies. Charlie McCarthy and Edgar Bergen were a hoot! Hilarious and entertaining!! Too bad radio drama is a lost art. People born after us baby boomers. those born after 1965 have no idea what a radio drama is. Sad!

      Feed me Seymore I found "Old Time Radio" about 12 years ago, and was amazed at how many programs still exist (like around 100,000) and today the technology helps them to sound like new . . I still listen all night long, and never tire of em. I'll continue to upload as many as I can, and always remember I'm ONLY posting the best sound quality and only the best stories without repeats. Suspense has about 200 episodes that are repeats or do-overs of a same story with a different title. I'm the only guy on TH-cam doing this. Quality, not quantity! I'm glad you're checking out the playlists, too. Thanks again. - Charlie

I've uploaded more than 650 programs (so far) 98% have improved or totally restored audio . . . I'm the only guy on TH-cam taking the time to provide ONLY the best. All I ask is the subscribe icon be tapped! (even if you never listen to another program) It costs zero!

    "The Hitch Hiker" was written by Lucille Fletcher who the very next year wrote "Sorry, Wrong Number" whose husband Bernard Hermann scored the music for both (and many other radio shows including Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Psycho"). "Sorry, Wrong Number" is probably the most popular radio drama of all time. It was also done on "SUSPENSE" 8 times from 1943 until 1961 when the show ended. All of those performances starred Agnes Moorehead in a 30 minute version. In 1955, Miriam Hopkins flew to Sydney, Australia and performed it for the Australian LUX Radio Theatre in the only 60 minute radio version known to exist.
    It is extremely well done and the plot is more developed due to the longer time slot. Miriam Hopkins is ably assisted by the creme of Australian radio actors of the time. The 60 minute version is available through Radio Archives in their Archives Treasures Volume 23.

    • @SuspenseESCAPEremastered
      @SuspenseESCAPEremastered  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for providing that info for listeners - You and I share similar knowledge of this great series. FYI: I uploaded Sorry Wrong Number last year (a 75th anniversary edition) Plus all of Agnes Moorehead's Suspense episodes are in one playlist on this channel, along with 3 dozen other collections. I hope you like my unique way of presenting these great programs! - Thank you for listening to my channel - Charlie

    • @richardmcleod5967
      @richardmcleod5967 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish you could upload the Australian LUX Radio Theatre 60 minute version of "Sorry, Wrong Number" episode with Miriam Hopkins. The comparisons of the 8 different versions with Agnes Moorehead are fascinating to hear each one, as they do differ and this version would only add to those comparisons.
      I wish Agnes Moorehead had been able to perform the 60 minute version as did Miriam Hopkins, but all of the SUSPENSE versions were in 30 minute sequences. The extra 30 minutes really allows for a plot development which really makes more sense.
      From all I have read, Lucille Fletcher wrote the various radio versions and also the LUX Australian 60 minute version. I think she also wrote the movie script with Barbara Stanwyck. Oddly, the movie version was Directed by Anatol Litvak who had been married to Miriam Hopkins! So much of old Hollywood, both in film and radio were interrelated. Georgia Ellis was married to Antony Ellis, Frank Lovejoy was married to Joan Banks and the list goes on and on.@@SuspenseESCAPEremastered

    Orson Welles was better than i expected - maybe due to his changing character from his usual low monotone - to the enthusiastic then terrified young man - better than the Twilight Zone version - maybe cuz it's a psychological story - and that is easier to pull off in an inner monologue than a visual presentation - i was particularly fascinated with the mechanics of putting thru a long distance call from a phone booth at the time

    I'd love to make something like this myself. At multiple times in the drama, repeating noises ( like the train crossing bell, or the cows mooing) and noises of different tempo (putting the coins in the pay phone) are used to create suspense or stress the listener. I'm sure there's people on here who would consider this pretty obvious, I'm more pointing it out for my own future benefit than anything else LOL.

    Orson Wells is the American version- (in my opinion)- of Sir Lawrence Olivier, just his attention to detail in his narration and his delivery of his lines etc

      It is odd that the British Film Institute (BFI) voted Orson Welles as the No. 1 Actor of the last Century, I assume over Sir Lawrence Olivier. The British were very familiar with the work of Orson Welles as he lived and worked for quite a while in England and worked actively on the Stage, film and in radio, specifically starring in "The Adventures of Harry Lime" and "The Black Museum" which were radio shows all produced and popular to the 1950's British Commonwealth radio audiences.

    As others mentioned, sound quality is exceptional - so often with many great dramas sound is so bad it renders them unlistenable. Noticed this has been remastered.... did you do this yourself, & if so, are you doing the same with all your uploads?

    • @SuspenseESCAPEremastered
      @SuspenseESCAPEremastered  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Derek Welford I'm sorry for this late response, somehow I missed your comment. Like you, I used to get frustrated with the sound quality of these shows posted elsewhere. Most guys just dump a bunch of programs on TH-cam then call themselves an "Old Time Radio" channel (they've never even LISTENED to the shows they post, either) I made a promise to provide the best quality audio available, and not to post the repeated episodes. Several years ago I purchased Suspense and Escape episodes on mp3 discs from a guy that restored and remastered programs by request (of course I had to pay for them) But the biggest problem is that there's no profit to be made, so there will always be thousands of shows all over TH-cam posted again and again with lousy sound quality (except here) The guy I bought them from doesn't do it anymore, because "It's not worth it" I'm willing to do it, but can't come close to affording the proper equipment and apps needed to do it correctly. It takes one to three hours to restore just one episode. The (lame) apps I use are too limited for total restoration and remastering, but I can improve the fidelity and level out the volume on every upload. I have nearly 800 uploads so far, and I'm going to keep on going as my channel is being slowly discovered and people subscribe. I'm already adding new series, but still have a few Escape episodes and about 100 more Suspense episodes to post. Thanks for commenting & subscribing. I will respond (eventually) to all comments.

    Greetings,
    I don't know if Lucille Fletcher's 'Sorry, Wrong Number,' on SUSPENSE, and starring Agnes Moorehead, was ever remastered. If not, I'd love to hear a clean, remastered version of it. Preferably the second performance (August 21, 1943), since she flubbed her scream on the premier May 15, 1943 presentation.
    'Sorry, Wrong Number,' is considered the greatest single radio script ever written."
    Episode 43, May 25 1943, The East (live) and West Coast (recorded) versions contained a flubbed line at the end that made the ending confusing.
    Episode 054, August 21, 1943 was a reprise performance that fixed the flawed ending.

      I have the best sounding version (from 1948 and a with flawless performance) in my AGNES MOORHEAD playlist, fully remastered. Also in my Suspense Best Sound Quality playlist. I think you'll enjoy my playlists - thanks for your comments!
