The story of Vincenzo Peruggia, the man who stole the Mona Lisa. How did an unassuming housepainter from Italy pull off “the greatest little known art heist in modern time?” Was his motivation more than money? Writer-director Joe Medeiros traces the path of Vincenzo Peruggia, charged with the 1911 theft of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa from The Louvre, and finds the story of a daughter mourning the father she never knew and a country recovering from old wounds. Combining historical photographs, animation and interviews with Peruggia’s descendants, Medeiros answers why and how the man called “Macaroni” by his French co-workers absconded with and kept the legendary painting for two years.

Today, it's hard to imagine that the world's most famous painting could be stolen, especially in broad daylight. And yet, in 1911, a guard at the Louvre Museum decided to steal the Mona Lisa to restore his country's honor by returning the spoliations commited under Napoleon. His name, Vincenzo Peruggia, will go down in history. Yet the Mona Lisa was not his first choice, even though the museum is home to many more famous Italian paintings. The Mona Lisa's singularity: its size. Indeed, it's easier to transport in broad daylight without arousing suspicion. This excerpt explains with a touch of humour how, in just 15 minutes, Peruggia managed to steal the painting and bring it back to his little bedroom in the 10th arrondissment and back to Italy. For 2 years, the Louvre will be orphaned by what will soon be its most famous painting. Astonishingly, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Mona Lisa didn't have the popularity or the aura it has today. An incredible theft story worthy of a Hollywood film
