In high school, the night before XC state finals, my teammate sent me this video. Gave me chills back then, still gives me chills and makes me tear up now.
"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." -Steve Prefontaine
Thank you for making this. I've come back to it so many times over the years, I would watch it before meets, before my dad would run his ultra's, or whenever I questioned why I ran. Thank you :)
This video makes me tear up every time. I run because my deceased sister physically couldn't; now I run for her memory and because it made her proud of me.
Dathan Ritzenhein's finish at the 1999 Footlocker championships is a moment I'll never forget. Every single time I watch it, it sends chills down my back, wishing I could go back and run one more high school cross-country race and give it every single ounce of energy I had.
I watched this video a long time ago when i was in High school when i ran 2010-2014 about to be 4 years later and i found running again. it took me a hour and a half to find this video.
I wept after watching this... I run because the for that brief moment in time that I run, all of the loneliness and sadness goes away and I feel nothing but utter joy... There is nothing like it. It is one of the only true pleasures in life.
I run because the feeling of crossing that finish line with noone else is amazing and it's one of the only sports where hard work actually pays off. It's a burning passion.
@JasonRexingHere BK was literally talking about the physical suffering that one goes through when trying to click off a pace that skirts the line between what you are capable and not. That type of suffering is universal. The only difference I can see is that the "runner" is ready to face down the demons as QC said. The non "runner" does not know the demons exist yet. Anyway, cheers and thanks for watching the videos. I appreciate it. CB
this is the best running video ever made. it has such a strong emotional bond to runners of all ages and abilites. i don't know how he did it, but he did
Greatest video in a long time. I'm blessed to have watched Moses Kiptanui break 8min in 3,000m steeplechase and seen Wilson Kipketer slog it out w Haillesalasie in Sydney. Run.
This video gave me goosebumps! So many great racing moments captured. When the gun goes off I know that I may be about to witness something magical. That's the beauty of running. Thanks Coach! I'm sharing it.
this is one of the most beautiful peices of art I have ever experienced. I watch it once every couple months. Thank you so much for supplying this video. Thank you.
I showed this to my XC team one day before practice. We're a new program, and while they have the heart and the dedication, I needed them to have focus. This really helped provide that for them and for me. Amazing. My kids ran their fastest that day for practice. Thank you for this and your other videos...
This video is great anytime I ask myself why do I run I can watch this and it remotivates me and I am so ready and pumped to go outside and run....Thanks
Because of the push, the camaraderie, the elegance, the anxiety, the turn out, the strength, both mentally and physically, the chance to change my life forever. That is why I run.
I have to say..as a runner who is struggling with my XC season and injuries and being sick, this video is one of the biggest inspirations to me, and its what encourages me to keep running especially on the days were all i want to do is quit, give up, and be done with it all.... so thank you for inspiring me so much
I run because when I'm running, it gives me a special feeling...It's indescribable, such a magnificiant, beautiful feeling! I remember the time, when I started running..how hard was that, but I'm so proud of me! Even if it seems conceit.. I believe that everybody can run but not everybody can enjoy it! I'm lucky, that I enjoy every time I go, even if its a bad day! And I love to see my faithful dog, who runs with me every time! It is worth! :)
I run to find myself to know who I am. For live more intensiv, to feel my body intensiv and to surpass myself. That gets me a feeling of being one with myself and nature. I think you will always have this undescribeable happy feeling if you challenge yourself in this high effort. It makes a cind of harmony between spirit and body. So I do it.
I love this video, my coach showed it to my team before Districts in Cross Country and now every time before a race or just when running is difficult I'll watch it and remember why I run. Thank you for making this
I run because I can, and am so thankful for that. The lady marathon runner in this video is Joan Benoit, and I was at the Coliseum when she won the 1984 Olympics. The music is so nice, it inspires me even more, to never stop running..
Fantastic video, extremely inspirational. The competitive drive embodied here brought tears to my eyes seriously. I have a race today and this video really pumped me up. Thank you.
because out there i truly mean something, to myself and to others. when i run i make a difference in so many peoples lives. its the one true place in myself where i can truly think with clarity and openness. i love it to much to quit, not now and not ever.
I forgot how moving watching Derek Redmond's dad help him across the finish line was. I cried so much the first time, and again now. The whole video was wonderful but that... was one of the most moving things I have ever seen in sport.
The best feeling is when you finish a race and you gave everything and you feel like crap but also feel really good. It really is a bittersweet victory.
it motivates me to get out, run, and strive to be something extraordinary each time I see this thing. I feel that running is one of the most difficult sports and reflects people's character and will the most because it's all between you, the course, and the clock.
This video is amazing. Every time I have to run Holmdel or Warinanco in the rain I give it my all knowing at least I'm not running a nine-minute two mile in the middle of an Alaskan snow storm.
I ran 8.5 miles today while 'Sandy' was raging. I was cold, unprepared, and ran through 2' feet of water at times. I loved it. for all of my life it will make me feel like a child again. It does-every time.
Running gives me life, and it shows that even I have great potential to be something great. It also shows how far I've also come in this journey called life. Running shows me the world. It also showed me that possessing great determination can offer A life that you would've never thought that you could achieve before. Even though many see us runners as people trying to cross a line we are more than just that. We Are Strong, Determined, And Ambitious because we all have one thing to prove. We have proven to make the impossible possible by NEVER giving UP
Great video. I was running in the Houston marathon in January and my training partner asked me why we're doing this, and I said because it feels so damn good when I get to walk. It's become my life, and if I don't get to run I don't feel well.
I run because it's a passion. Today I feel a lot of pain but I turn that pain into an energy which helps me to run faster and faster... I also love to run becuase it helps me to look forward and forget about the bad in my past and present... I move forward with every step and try to leave the pain behind....
I run for many reasons. Repetitive physical action is calming for me. Running keeps me sane. I feel like it makes me special. When I run, I feel like my true self.
I'm racing in my last high school race ever in around a week. I might be slow (PR: 18:39), but running means so much to me. Watching this video practically put me to tears.
This video affects me, emotions and energy are released when I watch it. It is hard to keep sitting after seeing this, got to go running! @Ryan, this is a great composition, a masterpiece!
I run because others can't, I run to prove to myself and everyone else that I'm worth something and I can be the change I wish to see in this crazy world. For the countless men, women and children I've seen so valiantly struggle to survive and live. I run for them.
Because at the line of ultimate fatigue I feel my body at max. It is pain and desire flowing through my vains. I love to run. @fancyboyproductions This is a fantastic production! My congratulations.
because for the first time, i found something that gives me something to be proud of. something that has defined my life into what i love. i am proud that i run and i run because i am proud...
i realized the answer for me today at my first indoor meet of the year. i ran the 4x8 and felt sick to my stomach before the mile. I thought about scratching but knew i couldnt live with myself for the day/week for that matter. I ran the race. Pushed the first 3 laps in first place...fell back to last at the end and puked. I couldnt be more happy with my decision to race. its about challenging yourself and knowing you gave what you had.
i used to watch this video the morning of every track meet, now that i look at it again form soo long i cried and now makes me want to get back into running
I run cause I'm hungry to be in pain. Freshman year I was mentally weak in Cross country. In track. In everything I ran I gave about 60 percent, because I was afraid to feel pain. But looking back on it I'm grateful I'm even able to run. A lot of people out there don't have that privelege. So when I run now I run like it's the last time I'll ever run again. Like maybe I won't run tomorrow because of some reason. Now I give it everything I have because when I do I feel pain and that makes me fe
i run because running makes my life better - because when I run, I don't worry about my future, my problems, my family and the bad things that happen in life. When I run, i focus on my breathing and nothing but my running. Running is precious.
umm, epic!! i am a runner for about 6 years and i always loved it but lately i started getting bored of it because i started setting to many goals for myself. after watching this video i now know the reason i started running in the first place. thanx for the experience man
I run because I am a masochist! There is something amazing about being able to go out anytime anywhere and just run. Running is complete freedom, escape from the rest of the world. When you run, you reach a place of your own creation, safe from everyone else. To run is to truly be free!
wow amazing video!!! loved it! got bout half way threw and i was like u cant tell me theres no PRE!!! then up it came prolly his most epic race even tho he lost because he gave it his all and wouls of won it there were running over a min for each quarter the first hald of the race! that race always gets me pumped. Thanks for the video
I was at the finish line at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, when Joan Benoit won the women's marathon. I had picked her as the winner, before it even started. I also watched the late Greta Waitz come in. These were just a few of the women who inspired me to never stop running..

To make sure, that no matter how many times I fall, I'll always have the strength to get up one more time. Falling physically or mentally, still works... I love the feeling when you think you can't run any further but still push on and go even faster.

How about now?
I run for my brother who can't.
I hope he is okay
This video makes me tear up every time.
I run because my deceased sister physically couldn't; now I run for her memory and because it made her proud of me.
I live for those 3 seconds from 3:25-3:28 when their strides sync and the music fades. That is the purest running I've ever seen.
Dathan Ritzenhein's finish at the 1999 Footlocker championships is a moment I'll never forget. Every single time I watch it, it sends chills down my back, wishing I could go back and run one more high school cross-country race and give it every single ounce of energy I had.
This made me cry, I have never seen a video capture running in such a way
I watched this video a long time ago when i was in High school when i ran 2010-2014 about to be 4 years later and i found running again. it took me a hour and a half to find this video.
I watch it again! and I cried again when I watched that two women crawling over the line! it's more than just a line on the road!
I wept after watching this... I run because the for that brief moment in time that I run, all of the loneliness and sadness goes away and I feel nothing but utter joy... There is nothing like it. It is one of the only true pleasures in life.

I love this video. I always come back to this video for inspiration.
How about now?
12 years later and it still hits me hard…
I've watched this video dozens of times and its still just as motivating as the first. thank you for the inspiration.
1:45, that look on his says it all. My high school cross-country coach would always tell us: "pain is temporary, pride lasts forever."
this is the best running video ever made. it has such a strong emotional bond to runners of all ages and abilites. i don't know how he did it, but he did
I run to feel the pain, and to forget it
Probably one of the most inspirational videos I have ever seen, coming from a college running, I can't wait to go for a run today.
Greatest video in a long time. I'm blessed to have watched Moses Kiptanui break 8min in 3,000m steeplechase and seen Wilson Kipketer slog it out w Haillesalasie in Sydney. Run.

haile grinding out that last 100 meters gives me goosebumps
i teared up, and i never cry. this is beautiful.
9:02 in a torrential snowstorm during practice while in HS is epic.
Wow this comment is old
this is one of the most beautiful peices of art I have ever experienced. I watch it once every couple months. Thank you so much for supplying this video. Thank you.
This is the most beautiful running montage I've ever seen. Kudos. Kudos. Kudos.
That immense pain through out your body that you get after you've given everything you could running a race; I live for that.
I never get tired of watching this. Always refreshing & motivating!
I showed this to my XC team one day before practice. We're a new program, and while they have the heart and the dedication, I needed them to have focus. Thank you coach Evans.. for showing me this video. It changed my entire life.
Because of the push, the camaraderie, the elegance, the anxiety, the turn out, the strength, both mentally and physically, the chance to change my life forever. That is why I run.
Thank you. This puts running in propective for the non-runners. I'm sure even after seeing this... they still wouldn't understand.
Oh man, this video was so awesome, this made me cry. Beautiful!
This video literally made my stomach flip a few times.... You have no idea how much this helps me right now during my training. Thank you. So much.
I watched this video hundreds of times before hitting the road. It remains for me the one video capturing the fundamental beauty of running
That's why I make 'em. Thanks for the post!
Did they not have direct comment replies 12 years ago?

I've seen this and commented on in previously but it never ceases to move me! Perfect viewing for my Boston Marathon taper.

I think you will always have this undescribeable happy feeling if you challenge yourself in this high effort. It makes a cind of harmony between spirit and body.
So I do it.
These messages are giving me courage to begin running, when I can barely walk.
There was a little horse called Secretariat, that showed me it's not size, its stride. With a great big heart.🙂
I love this video, my coach showed it to my team before Districts in Cross Country and now every time before a race or just when running is difficult I'll watch it and remember why I run. Thank you for making this

Thanks for sharing and for the inspiration.
The best feeling is when you finish a race and you gave everything and you feel like crap but also feel really good. It really is a bittersweet victory.
I love the clip at the Ironman, of one of the finishers that crawled trying to pull the other crawler to the finish line. Such heart!
Powerful video. If I ever need to remember why I run, I know where to look.
it motivates me to get out, run, and strive to be something extraordinary each time I see this thing.

To get outside the house and do something the human body is meant to do. It's a deep primal feeling.

i run because running makes my life better - because when I run, I don't worry about my future, my problems, my family and the bad things that happen in life. When I run, i focus on my breathing and nothing but my running.

Running the mile, or two, whatever
Lots of people dread at that thought, running
But I honestly can say running makes me happy
The only dread is if I don't try, or if I know I could have done better
I have a really crazy out of the world dream that has to do with running..
That I can see the world one day because of running
nobody thinks I can
they say you need to be trained from the start
But I don't need their opinions
This video really gave me inspiration, thank you
Six years on, are you any closer to that dream?
Whauw! .. Almost made me cry.
This video is absolutely beautiful. Good job
10 years since I made this comment. Video still makes me cry. Beautiful
Because it is something I'm good at and it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Because there is always room for improvement.
well said and may all the negative people and experiences disintergrate with every run
watching dathan ritzenhein win footlocker always brings tears to my eyes and happiness to my heart
