I highly recommend buying his NTM stream. I learned so much from him, and would recommend anyone! Not that I only started using key spikes(changed my life haha), I figured how to use EQ on drums more musically

Really recommend the MCDSP multiband compressor/gate. You can just do a multiband gate to get the initial attack of the high end, and then let the low end ring. Seems to be a very similar effect in one plugin.

The Slate Drums Gate has basically the same thing, with a full freq gate and a secondary ‘debleed’ gate with controllable HF and LF rolloffs. The detector circuit also has a transient enhancement control so the gate reacts only to loud transients and not to bleed from other kit pieces. It’s my favourite gate for drums.

@@kebbinator that’s been my go-to since it was released. Works great.

There's a plugin for it (of course there as to be)
the "Cymbal Killer", it lets you pick threshold for both band, crossover, time parameters, lookahead, mix, everything you can on pro-g, without needing to duplicate or throw a multiband splitter on every track. It's pretty good for snares too

are you saying this plugin takes the key spikes and all that he does place? like making it all easy?

A well known issue with the brainworx SSL's is that the frequencies displayed (on all three brainworx SSL channels) are inaccurate. Some frequency ranges are worse than others. By inaccurate I referring to the frequency they show vs the frequency they deliver. Like if you’re set the knob to 500 Hz it'll actually be affecting 900 Hz or something way off like that. It can be a time waster when looking for an exact frequency.
This is only a display/GUI issue. So you have to sweep to find the frequency you really want.

They're still amazing plugins. I'm often surprised that more people don't prefer the J over the E.
Edit: Just wanted to add now that I finished watching, the end result here sounds really good. Thank you for sharing. I’ve tried doing something similar in the past with a few different kinds of multiband gate but I can’t say I got good results with it.

Yap especially the low mid freq on the black knob version can be about 400hz off.
      Check my post above

I recently figured out more or less the same technique. It makes a lot of sense if you think about it. The stick attack is quick and often followed by a cymbal hit, so you want to gate it before the bleed comes into play, but that abruptly kills the sustain of the drum.

This is terrible advice, on most SSL plugins including the brainworkx, their frequencies values don't correspond to the real frequencies.
On the BX the 800hz on the blue pot is about 400hz. If you change it to the brown knob version is about 600hz.
The offsets are veeery off, and this is probably why UAD doesnt even show you the exact frequency or allows you to type it.
What's the point of scoping the fundamental and then aim for it on another plugin?
Boosting the fundamental is not even the the best choice sometimes as it can be too overpowering in some situations.
If you really want to boost the fundamental either do it straight on the ProQ3 or just use your ears....
