This video was featured in Time, Huffington Post, The Blaze ..pretty much everywhere.
55 year old Maurice Johnston lives in Boston, by way of Cleveland. He has a Masters Degree in Plasma Physics from Dartmouth College, and a masters in Electrical Engineering and acoustics from Purdue University. He's worked over 10 years at Lockheed Aerospace & Aerodyne Research Corp. Maurice has taught in Science and physics, and took care of both his parents in their time of need. Maurice is very well spoken, (he sounds like Obama) and is very kind, so why is Maurice homeless.....
Maurice is referenced in the Boston Globe here: bo.st/16HVUQB
Maurice has an in depth "LinkedIn" profile here: linkd.in/lK0bdJ
Maurice' E-mail address is referenced in the video
Hi and Thank You for taking the time to watch this video, my name is Danny McGlashing and I run the 60 Days channel here on TH-cam, I work part time as an all around volunteer in my community. I am currently working on 'The Underdog Network' for people like Maurice, check it out at udnet.org
I can be contacted either on twitter @DannyMcGlashing , on Facebook through this link: on. kxuykS or via e-mail danny@dannymcglashing.com
Thank you for watching this video and please send Maurice all the support you can, preferably a job in his field ;)

When someone calls you overqualified, that's bullshit. The real thing they are telling you is, "You'll too good and you'll either have my position, or be promoted above me. And I don't want that to happen."

No. What they're saying is "If I hire you, and if you get a better, more challenging, better fitting job, you will leave mine and take that. Which is completely fine and we're happy for you, but that brings us back to square one because we will need to spend the same amount of time training a new employee."
There's always two sides to everything.

I do know that some companies, I wouldn't think of aerospace or higher educational institutions being this way though, dislike people in their upper 50's especially 60's because it raises their worker insurance premiums; it's not uncommon for insurance companies or if the company created their own insurance company, for their actuaries to tell the management do something about your older workers because that causes rates to be higher, or if the company owns the employee insurance gimmick, causes higher expenses.

So after being homeless for several years with a PhD degree and several books published in my field (all peer reviewed), I gave up looking for work and didn't tell anyone about my level of education. But just when I was not expecting anything, I was called from a Middle School, near the place where I was camping, to teach. And is here where I am since 2010: teaching in a middle school. And guess what? I love it. I don't even think anymore about the time when I was teaching kids in Boston in Ivy League Colleges. Teaching at-risk kids was my first job in 1986 (Harlem, NY), and this time I am at home teaching at-risk kids. I am 58 years old!

Let's high-five! Here is another one more or less like you. (I just wrote to Maurice as well.) I did that thing too. If you say you're educated, people think you're crazy or merely joking. So I too had two CV versions, one for kitchen jobs etc but of course then they will say that you likely won't be able to operate their brand of coffee machine, LOL. I am not black, but I am a migrant. Just as bad. Everyone knows we're all thieves and liars. (Okay, I am exaggerating.) My homelessness is a while ago, but I still feel just as stuck as I was back then. 2020 has just started and dammit, I've so had it with misery and boredom and I've decided that 2020 will be different. Because it has to be.
Added on 11 November: My situation had a lot to do with so-called sadistic stalking including extensive hacking. It is quite common for stalking victims to lose their income and home. Unfortunately, the difference between sadistic stalking and strange customs in your host country - if you are a migrant - can be hard to identify. My stalkers still won't leave me alone and I see no other way forward than making a lot of noise about it first and taking it forward by turning this liability into an asset. My two stalkers are probably commonly considered "batshit-crazy" but that is not their fault. Society needs to make more room for these types of personalities.
If it's not that, then English most people are batshit-crazy...

I volunteered at a homeless shelter in Jacksonville, FL back in 2006. One question that we had to ask people who came in for a bed was how many years of schooling they had. I don't know why, but we just did. Anyway, a volunteer asked a 50-something year old guy that question and he said 24 or something like that. Everyone started looking at him and then each other. The volunteer was like "huh"? They guy said that he went to medical school. I later found out that he was a doctor and his wife left him for another man. He became so distraught and messed up mentally that he started drinking heavily, lost everything, and ended up homeless.

Don't just believe NOTHING turned into SOMETHING. There is a God and He cares. That is why Jesus died for us and is coming back. Evolution theory is laughable when you really study it (I did). Chris Brown, stop being an idiot. Someone does not spend that long in school with the intention of accepting a Fast Food or Roof job....especially at his age which would be close to retirement age now (62 as this video was done 7 years ago). Do you even understand how difficult a Masters in Electrical Engineering is hard to get? Of course you don't, because idiots like yourself don't value education.
This is why America relies so much on immigrants to produce technological innovations, because people like you give education a second thought when it should be the most important thing in society. The fact that you are able to use TH-cam and respond to comments can be attributed to Computer Scientists going to school. Of course you don't think of stuff like that, because you don't look at all the abstract layers.

    • @ilaser4064
      @ilaser4064 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Chris Brown, how would taking a menial role actually help him? You also think that fast food outlets want to hire someone that's purely seeking employment to fill time, ie no long term prospect of them hanging around? And can you really envisage a 55 year old, overweight man climbing across roofs?
Seriously I really hope you're never faced with the same situation, as you'd quickly learn your suggestions merely consist of asinine rhetoric.
But I'm guessing you likely dropped out of school early so have little concern of ever being deemed over qualified for anything.

That is "the problem" you have when you come from the lower level of society--you must provide for members of your family! You are not just dealing with your own issue, you have to solve you family's economical problems.

This man is definitely on the backside of his productive period . He is not what he once was , what ever that is . He is dwindling and soon he will blink out . Did he ever amount to anything ? We spent our entire life savings on her care. But that didn't save her, we lost her at 37. Then I became sick and the bill at he hospital was 300K, I was in there a month. Even with insurance we had to pay 20% which was 60K. One year later I was sick again with the hospital bill at 200k, so we had to pay 40K. Then hubby was laid off. He was 63 years old. Nobody wants to hire an old Electrical Engineer. So we retired without savings and still owing about 20K. It is very hard

Wayne Robinson, that's a lie. There are people out there who are born with a silver spoon in their hand, there are those who have to work from having absolutely nothing to gaining something in life. It is well-noted that often those whom are rich remain rich, and often those whom are poor remain poor unless if some odd catastrophe occurs.
So when you say "Life does not give the best to the least deserving" observe what you say before you write it. Because that is certainly true, I can think of a lot of people on the top of my head who do not deserve the riches they have, yet have it. By the way, fix your spelling and grammatical errors.

You don't what they've been through, where they came from, and all the things they're battling with. How dare anyone look down upon another in judgment as if you think you know someone's entire life based on a single glance, and think them less than a human being.

Getting a gig in research requires a LOT of intellect, work, and patience. Teaching in a high school for him is out of the question mostly because of his criminal record.

      @@AraluenSparr What criminal record?
If you've kept up with what's really going on as opposed to the propaganda in the media about the fake booming economy, you'd know that most job markets have been gutted as well as anyone over 35 years old (much, much worse over 50) are usually eliminated for consideration regardless of degrees, experience, abilities and willingness.
Personally, I've met tons of older Americans who once worked in such fields as engineering, computers and other supposedly lucrative areas who lost their jobs due to a failing company, downsizing or being kicked out because they were too old for what HR wanted to pay or they were replaced with inexperienced foreigners the laid off employee had to train. Many of them have either been forced into an early retirement or working crappy part-time retail level jobs just to hold them over. It's still very bad out there.
This was filmed in 2011 when things were even worse. Odds are, no matter how hard he tries, he'll never be offered a decent paying job again. They save those for the 29 year olds and even they are having a very tough time. It's bad for all of us unless you are very well connected.

@@astridgalactic9336…...….You are absolutely correct Astrid! I have worked in the business world for 35 years - the last 20 years in Learning & Development. Whilst I am only degree educated, I have a raft of L&D qualifications and was senior manager, lead facilitator and course designer for one of the 'Big 4' Accounting firms for almost a decade. [as part of my job, I was also responsible for designing, delivering and managing the firm's 'Train-the-Trainer' program China-wide].
Although I am 'old' - I am an extremely passionate practitioner of 'contemporary' learning methodologies [such as experiential and accelerated learning] and embrace new concepts with relish. I am also a voracious reader of everything related to the business world - I am fascinated by the impact that new technologies and social media are having, the shift from a product-centric to customer-centricity business model and the dramatic and rapid changes that the global markets are experiencing.
I have given keynotes and seminars on these topics in numerous countries in Asia [where I have lived for the past 25 years] and consider myself an SME [subject matter expert] on many of them. I have helped a wide range of business professionals from fresh graduates and interns, to very senior management and C-suites.
Yet for the past five years - I have been unable to find stable and regular work. I've applied for literally thousands of jobs from Singapore to Poland that [without wishing to sound arrogant] I could do standing on my head. I have had 3 interviews in all that time - and on every occasion the interviewer looked like a 16 year old college student!
I have worked with 'HR, Organisational and Talent Development Heads' in a plethora of major banks and financial institutions who haven't got the faintest idea of what constitutes an effective 'end-to-end' L&D strategy, how to create and manage a high-quality L&D department or even facilitate a workshop properly.
So like you state in your comment - I too, have found myself having to accept crappy and very low-paid work [on a one-off basis] for greedy 'so-called' training companies who offer prehistoric and totally irrelevant content - that is mostly delivered by cretins who would be more suited to stacking shelves in Wallmart! [and that's an insult to Wallmart employees!]
To make matters works, these training companies religiously adhere to the 'Treat your people like shit, pay them peanuts and keep all the money for yourself' Business Model. I roar with laughter when I see supposed 'gurus of business' talking about diversity in the workplace on forums such as Ted, LinkedIn, HBR etc. It's a fucking myth!
I have never felt so demoralised, frustrated and utterly fed-up in all my life. I have no idea how my wife and I will survive - but it saddens me greatly that it's so much more about 'who you know and not what you know' that matters today.

Lucky for me by the grace of God I was able to retire completely. But at first I was left destitute almost became homeless, and what hurt the most and always will is that I did ALL the right, socially and educationally prescribed things and in the end NO ONE gave a damn and even took a certain pleasure in almost destroying me. Never again. I oftentimes think of going to work temp but my body and mind lock up completely.
When I go to gym early in the mornings I see mostly 20 and 30 something's going to work-very few 50 and 60s.
Even the white male friends I knew and sometimes worked with back then now aged 50s and early sixties have reappeared with horror stories of being forced out, laid off, fired, worked almost to death. Most have had to get on disability because the workplace DOES NOT want them AND has used them up so their physical and mental health is iffy at best.

Otherwise, you gonna lose your business in a very short period. Also, schools do not teach students how to survive in this society.

Most of these work hard to make them self indispensable to their employer and in time are accounted faithful and beneficial and they rise in value and security . These are the kind business are built upon . If you are young and have collegeeducation it shouldny hurt you unless you have bought into the SJW crap and the entitled mentality that thinks your needs should be provided for you irrespective of any value you bring to the company . These kinds will find them self going down the road kicking rocks until they can get some things strait in their thinking . Nothing is owed you because you went to school don't kid yourself .

This guy s 30,000$ a year job is and was nothing laborers in cnstruction make more than that / it is possible to waste your productive years in vain empty pursuit and it appears he did . Social security requires you to be vested with forty qualified quarters. Once you are vested you may apply and award will be established based on last five years income . This guy is missing life he is 55 at the time with no history and broken history / if you were hiring your criteria wont allow you to hire him . I would be more impressed with a better story without him being the hero marked by self sacrifice after hanging out in school for years . What good did these degrees do him ? Now maybe if he goes back and gets another . I actually met a man with five degrees he was a professor at university . Two degrees but no accomplishment or history . When people hire they look at history they look for stability . This guy says he doesn't have that but he has two degrees . You cant eat the degrees and if you are not benefitted by them they were a waste of time . In same space of time it took him to get his degree an apprentice Ironworker will earn 125,000$ this is before he becomes a journeyman . Im not impressed one bit with this guy. Lillie Albert I am 63 and will be changing my life in 2 years, God willing. I came to Germany through the Military in 85 and after the dog and pony show (Desert Storm) I decided to leave the Military after 10 years of BS. I started by working with the Military, but I hated the structuring, I had just left the Military, I spoke NO Germany, I applied and received a job as Forklift driver through the help of a friend. I was 38. Through many trails and tribulations with my language shortcomings, the economy, and me not feeling appreciated, and undervalued I decided to learn the language, and was given the opportunity to go to a Trade Program to qualify as a Warehouse Supervisor. After 4 years I was a qualified WS but lacked the experience, so I took a position under my qualifications to gain experience. I was 46 and although working through a Temp I pushed it hoping for a Full time contract. After 4 years of hearing the same BS and moving from job to job with 50 things dried up. The Recession hit Germany and jobs were scarce, plus I was no longer young, I thought, not wanting to play the RACE CARD. I was picked up by an US Contractor and after 3 years the Contract ran out and I was jobless again. I applied again for a Temp and was sent to Siemens. But I was given the same run around. Here, after 18 months at one position they have to hire you. I was fired 17,5 months later, but picked up with another Temp and sent to another Siemens for 17,5 months and fired again. Although the pay was great, I had no full time job. Fortunately, my Mother didn’t raise no dummy, and I walked into a Company and asked if they needed help. That was 2013. I was hired not only because of my Qualifications, but because I was American, spoke Americanish, AfroAmerican, and my age!! I was 55 and because of that many Companies are looking for those older, better qualified, reliable workers.I Supervise the shipping and receiving dept. have dealings with the UK, UAE, USA and have 3 Team members. What I am suggesting is that maybe he should go to a English speaking Country, or the UAE and try. There are many Contractors online that, if hired, will send you a ticket and make all accommodations for you. And Saudi Arabia is moving in the future. Mostly the workers come out of India, Pakistan, or the US.The USA is not the end of the World. I commend you for giving your Parents back. It wasn’t so much a SACRIFICE as it was your RESPONSIBILITY, but it did set the clock back a little. America has a treasure trove of qualified workers that are of the older generation, and unfortunately many, through no fault of their own, end up in bad situations. In Europe they have learned to tap into this source and it makes everyone happy. I believe as long as the Brother doesn’t lose himself, through depression, drugs, or alcohol, he will find his happiness. It also goes to show you that an education is great to have, but it doesn’t always pay the bills. Never give up!!

I hope this man is now doing well, I lost my dad at 19. He seems very swift and smart. It makes me sad because you can tell he’s holding back emotions. I hope this guy shoots for the stars!

I'm from STEM academia and I'm not saying this can't possibly be real but even if it is, it's an extremely rare situation. It's the first time I hear something of this sort. It's pretty rare for people with engineering or physics degrees from fancy universities to not be able to find jobs with salaries starting at least at 60k-70k, let alone become homeless.

It happens quite frequently. When you have young kids that come out of college and will work for half that, it's hard for someone over 45 to get back on track. I'm an Engineer with a Master's Degree and 10 years experience. This oftentimes scares managers who think one day this person may take my position. When I interview, I keep it simple. I don't tell them my plans on going back to school or relocating until I know they are on board with what I want to do.

Erick Jordan Yeah me being one of the young ones...I am a young guy with my CS degree...I told them I wanted to design systems...they needed people to maintain the already built system..A code monkey I like to call them. I love the design aspect of the coding.... I usually wait last minute to code. Once done I hate sitting through it looking for a variable I didnt initialize or a variable with similar names being used. (I make mistakes lol) I hate this economy because barely anybody wants to take chances they all are playing it the safe route. I don't want a job where I sit there and maintain somebody elses design.

+arthurthegreat I get to differ...In the Baltimore Washington Metro Area, I was in workforce development with an Aerospace Engineer, and a number of men and women who were from Tech fields, and they had no job, the Aerospace Engineer still has no job. The jobs go to younger people who will take less money, and have the most recent training in tech. Also, they had families, the economy tanked, and what they were offered jobs that did not cover their expenses. But then there is another issue....The guy said it, PhDs can cause you issues in getting a job. It scares the employers away before they even get a chance to consider offering you a job. Either they don't pay you at all what you are worth and need as a living wage, or they don't even consider you because they assume you want to much.

I looked up his LinkedIn profile, and it showed no new job experience after 2010.
So if that is up to date, the answer would be .. no.

I'm from Canada. Most of the comments here are pretty insane. Like, all but a few people commenting here have a brain. This guy is having (or had) a bad time, difficult situation. From many comments here, I can smell racism, uneducated people making judgment and it is very sad. I would shelter and feed this guy and help him, and I am poor myself but could help him. Some say because he is black he's (of course) a drug addict, an alcoholic or whatever... What's wrong with you Americans? What the fuck...

I agree with what you said but it's just as stupid to generalize a whole country (Although I'm American and yes, most of us are ignorant dumbasses).

    •  10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You're right, I shouldn't generalize. My apologies for that. I'm still pissed by SOME of the comments. Thank you.
