  • You've heard it for years! The original Xbox is the spiritual successor to the greatest console of all time, the Sega Dreamcast. I'm here to shed some light on this claim and clear up some confusion around Sega and Microsofts complex relationship around the turn of the century.
I do have one correction at the end that kind of just adds to my point, but still.
I love both of these consoles so much. I bought both at launch, and cherish the advancements, creativity and wonderful games released during possibly the best era in gaming.

Sega's consoles were more than just a collection of Sega titles.
They were also where you'd find oddball Western titles and the best music playback.
And raw horsepower that could outperform every other console when they were released.
Look at the PS2's smooth, low detail, textures and skipped frames. What about that says Sega to you?

The design of the xbox controller is kind of a fusion between the Dreamcast and Sidewinder controllers that Microsoft made in the mid to later 90s. People usually forget about those controllers but they have a pretty similar black design to what the original xbox would have, they even both feature a terrible d-pad! Wish they would've taken the d-pad from the dreamcast instead.

    • @TynologyGaming

I actually cut out a bit part of this video about the Sidwinder! I had one in the 90s, but it was the ACBXYZ 6 button that mimicked the Saturn 😂 I cut it because I focused on the 4 button ABXY layout which actually came out right before the Xbox (clearly they knew what was coming) - that was a whole rabbit hole I didn’t expect to get sucked into haha

@@TynologyGaming Well it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft had a hard time deciding if they where going to include a 6 button layout or not. I think the small black and white buttons they added might have been a compromise.

This video is a bit inaccurate. Take it from someone who was far too invested in online gaming news in the late 90s/early 2000s.
Shenmue 2 was never released in North America on the Dreamcast and became a North American Xbox exclusive. Spikeout: Battle Street, Otogi 1 and Otogi 2 were also Xbox exclusives.
PSO was a fairly big game that was on Xbox/GC but not the Playstation 2. Iron Phoenix is a forgotten but fun online arena fighter that was also exclusive to Xbox. Rent a Hero was only on Xbox but as a Japan exclusive. I don't understand why that was never localized on any console.
The Dreamcast ace in the hole was it's online service. Sega was pushing online as it's main system seller... Sega Net was even an ISP owned by Sega. Many Dreamcast owners bought the console to play games online. That chunk of players naturally switched to Xbox because Microsoft was also pushing Xbox Live and online gaming while GC/PS2 barely had online plans.
The Sega games that came to PS2 the first were bad ports of arcade games done by Acclaim (Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler). Then Sega did a good amount of Saturn and Genesis rereleases on the PS2 of Virtual Cop, Nights and a bunch of games we never got over in North America... even the Seaman sequel was Japan exclusive.
So I think if those games weren't Japan exclusive and we actually got them in the west the sentiment would of been different.
But as someone from North America.
Looking at what we actually got, the focus on online, the focus on couch multiplayer with the 4 ports, and even the design of the controller. The Xbox at that time really felt like the Dreamcast 2.0, and that was the main sentiment online at that time.
Even a game like Microsoft's own Phantom Dust from Panzer Dragoon creator felt like a spiritual Dreamcast game. And I think you have to look how popular Dead or Alive became on Xbox. It sold best, and had multiple exclusives on Xbox and DOA2 was a big deal on the Dreamcast back in the day. Another good example is Project Gotham Racer. PGR became fairly important for the OG Xbox and Metropolis Street Racer the first release in the franchise was a hyped game for the Dreamcast.
Again... I think it's harder to look back on and see why people call the Xbox the Dreamcast 2.0. But if you owned a Dreamcast back then, and were aware of the gaming news... you fully understand why the Xbox was seen as the Dreamcast 2.0.

    • @TynologyGaming

This has a lot of great information in it. I bought both my DC and Xbox on day 1 of their releases and played both online as soon as the services were available. I appreciate the corrections for exclusives (don’t know how I missed Shenmue II, it’s in my notes haha). At the time it felt like a good progression for fans of the Dreamcast like me. The Dreamcast was NOT running on Windows CE. The majority of Sega's games were ran on Shinobi, Kamui(Naomi) & Ninja APIS, all custom tailored for the Dreamcast SH-4 & Power VR graphics. Notice that Marvel VS Capcom 2 can't be emulated easily, because it ran on Naomi hardware. This is why the DC says "Compatible with Windows CE" when the initial plan was to have the DC use a Windows CE OS, but it didn't pan out

@@TynologyGamingI can’t remember now. But I am not sure it even was the full windows CE. We checked it out when we got our DC dev kits. If I am not mistaken it was more som kind of bootstrapped wrapper / loader. So basically you could run windows CE on your PC write it using windows CE version of Direct X and the build it out to DC with the special DC toolchain and then it would run ok DC the same as on the PC (more or less - some platforms specific tweaks was needed)
So in some sense the windowsCE was more or less marketing bullshit. It was more a DirectX to PVR wrapper and then support to compile the code to SH4 where some of the “windowCE>DC libs was already built.

MVG's Video is pretty damn convincing. That guy is a Programmer and worked on games.
He thinks the System is. That said, what do I think? Well, here is the deal. Let's lay some groundwork.
Number One, it's awfully fishy to me that Microsoft was working on a console when SEGA was weak in
the market and needed to succeed with Dreamcast. Now, it's not that fishy to me that Microsoft was doing
this in general though. Because understand something. Microsoft did a lot of projects in their experimental
labs and had many small teams. Microsoft also did a lot of internal struggle sessions with developers. One of
the weird, strange products that Microsoft came out with was something called the Zune. Remember that? Yeah,
same kind of process. Then there are the tons of other things that never got released or saw the light of day off the
    work benches at Microsoft.
Second, What Microsoft did reminds me of what Sony did. When in the book "Console Wars", Sony's Engineers and Sega
of America's Engineers worked "Closely together" on a console that would have been a joint project. When it never happened
Sony mysteriously came out with their PlayStation right after that and sold it for lower cost than Saturn. Sound Familiar? In
Sony's case it was more theft in my opinion than Microsoft but, Microsoft wasn't known to keep their hands out of the cookie jar
either. They were in a lot of trouble for Anti-trust suits etc., around 1999 I believe. Am I saying Microsoft stole from SEGA? No. Let
me be clear I am not; however, I am saying that something similar could have taken place. As the timing of the supposed development
of the Xbox just happened to meet the timeline of Dreamcast's Launch window and development. All Coincidence I bet. Yeah right.
Anyway, SEGA published on Sony because of the user base. Sony only "won" over SEGA because of PS1's history and because of SEGA's
internal strife. Between Okawa and SEGA of America. Which he promptly fixed for the worse. The Dreamcast also had impossible goals to meet
set by Okawa who had jump the Business shark by being both the head of the Investment firm CSK and the company they owned SEGA. He set the
tone and he set the goals. Okawa as the good guy is BS. Now, SEGA had to do something to keep themselves from going under and they did what they
needed to do to survive. Even if that means putting their games on a console with inferior graphics than Dreamcast. Yes, it's true SEGA Dreamcast was better.
Btw, Chihiro and Xbox are PC based.
They are PCs. Everything SEGA made from then on in the arcade outside Tri-Force is PC based. Lindbergh to NU. All PC based.
Clearly SEGA was going to go in this direction. As a result of their hardware team's issues. Now, there were team members who liked SEGA and Team members who
didn't like SEGA at Xbox. It's clear then, that this system has the feel and style and overall milieu of what made Dreamcast something special. However, the other things
that didn't were purposefully made by that other team. In fact, I'd say the people who loved SEGA were kicked out at Xbox as the 360 went from looking like a Dreamcast
with it's creme color scheme and Blade interface to a completely different interface and change to it's shell. The other team won. The SEGA guys left. So, in my opinion,
based on the feel and style and over all of the Xbox. Yes, it's a Dreamcast 2. It feels like SEGA all through it. Especially the controller. Also Modern Vintage Gamer's video
on it, is pretty damn convincing as well. Btw I am a big SEGA hardware nerd and I love their hardware very much. I could talk all day about it. SEGA Forever! Saturn never got
    a chance!

    • @TynologyGaming
      @TynologyGaming  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It was an entirely different team inside of Microsoft that worked with Sega and they were entirely cut out of the Xbox development. Sega was out of the hardware business almost a year before the Xbox launched (not after). In the video I explain the biggest similarity is the controller itself. Sega worked extensively with PS, Nintendo and Xbox immediately after exiting (most with Sony though).

    • @segaunited3855
      @segaunited3855 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TynologyGaming Microsoft started development of the "X Gaming Box" in July of 1999. There were internal Details published on Angelfire during that time and Mircosoft used Several of Sega Amusement USA's Key Designers and Engineers who had previously defected from Black Belt(Katana/NAOMI was 100% Japanese and done by Sega Away27 and Naoya Tsurumi) that Bernie Stolar had fired and chased away. So the notion that SEGA was cut out of Xbox's development isn't correct. Microsoft and SEGA had a partnership ALL the Way until Isao Okawa took over as CEO and had been in talks with Soichiro Irimajiri in offering SEGA a $5 billion loan to keep Dreamcast and its Roadmap going until 2005. Many of Xbox's Engineers had internships with SEGA and worked with various Sega AM3 Japan partners.
And NO, SEGA officially left the Home Consumer Business on January 31,2001. They were STILL in the hardware business in 2000, which remained until Irimajiri was fired by Okawa. "Sega Worked extensively with PS" is beyond False. Early on, Sega's In house teams in mid 2001 mostly worked with Xbox and alot of in house teams had moved on to Gamecube/Stargate. SEGA development on PS2 didn't come until 2002 and majority of SEGA's IP's were picked up and published by various publishers (Who are ironically Now defunct) because prior to his death, Okawa had TRIED to sell off ALL of SEGA's IPs to the highest bidder.
Valentine and MVG are fairly correct, Xbox has a TON of inspiration and influence from Dreamcast.

    • @valentine_puppy
      @valentine_puppy หลายเดือนก่อน

@@TynologyGaming That's right they were cut out. Microsoft had many teams working on many things, and they all worked against each other. This was a common thing in the company. Even for experimental products. I never said They weren't out of the business after Xbox launched. 2001 for DC's end and 2002 for Xbox launch.
I said the development of Xbox in the Timing to Dreamcast. Yes, the controller is the biggest tell but, that's significant and so is the style of the console and the style of the plugs used for the controllers were very similar to the Dreamcast. Sony didn't have plugs like that. Now, you can point to Nintendo having plugs like that too. To be fair. Xbox though had very similar indentations of the Controller plugs like Dreamcast did, that little ledge for it to sit there. Look closely at the Xbox and you will see it.
However, keep in mind that Nintendo's Project Stargate was meant to compete with Dreamcast. SEGA also showed off their prototypes at CES and you think Nintendo wasn't watching that? Anyway, Xbox is Dreamcast 2 in spirit if not in specific design cues and games on launch. Oh let's not forget to mention that the killer app Halo was being developed for Dreamcast. So, more than you said in the video was involved with SEGA and Xbox. Not that I am saying you're wrong. I am saying you are right, but. I am trying to add to it and not take away from the discussion. Your video was a good video.

I bought a PS2 in late 2001 to Play Soul Reaver 2, because they cancelled it for Dreamcast and my 1998 built PC couldn't run it. I then bought an Xbox in 2003 because the PS2 did_not live up to the "what's 10x as powerful as anything else out there" hype or continue any kind of gameplay I cared about without making it more mainstream as a first priority. That said, the Xbox was not a Dreamcast 2, or a Sega console.
Sega consoles were about bringing the Arcade home, albeit with trade offs, and then about bringing NEW previously unknown games. Both categories fit Sega's Arcade game releases, by and large, as well. Sega brought this to their consoles not in a handful per generation, but in no less than several dozen (32-50+) unique new gameplay concepts per year. This did not happen on Xbox, or PS2, or Gamecube, not in the Action genres at least.

    It is though.
It doesn’t take a genious to figure out that the Xbox isn’t a Sega console and it makes no difference how many more Sega games are on the PS2.
The whole Xbox is a spiritual successor is just that. When the DC went away the Xbox literally took it’s place and had the same controller layout.
It’s enough to satisfy Dreamcast fans.
It has literally nothing to do with was hardware was used or what deals had been made because by the way today a high end Windows PC with an Xbox controller is the current Dreamcast because it feels pretty much the same if Sega made a more powerful gaming system than the PS5/Series X.
So the whole something something is the Dreamcast 2 or 3 isn’t about techinal facts but all about keeping the Dreamcast alive through what replaced it in the timeline and took enough inspiration from the DC controller so it’s familiar.

I don’t get why it would be a spiritual successor. It’s a console built upon PC tech from another company than SEGA. That took inspiration in some tech and visual areas from DC.
I mean if so we can call DC the spiritual successor of N64 as it has 4 control ports and of PS1 (as Dreamcast look more like a PS1 than a Saturn)
Why is there is a need to link DC to another hardware?
Dreamcast was discontinued in 2001 the end of it. SEGA and its IP and software continued and is still here. Focus on that.

TriForce had no Sega IPs, the Chihiro had mainline Sega IPs that followed tradition from Naomi or Model 2/3.
The Xbox controller takes massive inspiration from the Dreamcast - double memory card slots, the only other controller with 2 analog triggers, and the colors used for the buttons are also the same but shuffled around. (These similarities and changes gives let me cheat off your homework vibes).
The Xbox was online ready out of the box, the GameCube and the PS2 required add-ons. Dreamcast required no add-ons.
The PS2 is disqualified as the successor to the Dreamcast “because it killed it”. The PS2 is very obviously a Sony system with only sometimes Sega visiting as a guest. Yakuza became a Sony supported franchise for the longest of times, but it wasn’t until the end of 2005, which was already by the time the Xbox 360 was out.
A bunch of Sega games on PS2, doesn’t diminish it’s launch and early game window of releases for the Xbox.
A lot of the system exclusives for Xbox were games that were direct sequels for games that were released on the Dreamcast or were games that were originally developed for the Dreamcast and then development shifted to Xbox.
Rent-A-Hero, ToeJam and Earl 3, and Shenmue 2.
The GameCube came out swinging by putting out two Sonic games that were just ports of games we already owned on Dreamcast - which doesn’t feel like the cool new Dreamcast 2 - it’s just a sidestep. And they were released for all of those that didn’t own a Dreamcast. Monkey Ball was good shit though (Deluxe did come out on Xbox).

Xbox is not the Dreamcast 2 cause it doesn't had Grandia 2, Evolution World, and Skies of Arcadia Legends on it. All of these games were Dreamcast exclusives RPGs but later re-released on GameCube and PS2 only. The PS2 is not the Dreamcast 3 cause even though it had Virtua Fighter 4, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Yakuza, it doesn't had Phantasy Star Online. Though the GameCube had Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur II, Evolution World, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, it doesn't had Shenmue and Daytona USA so it's not the Dreamcast 4.

Yeah I hate Moore giving away the late DC stuff near the end. Also the Dreamcast library was a much better balance of Western and esp. Japanese exclusive games. XBox had a MUCH WORSE amount of exclusive Japanese games vs. exclusive Western ones. XBox had MUCH more of the latter while in the scheme of things the OG XBox had a relative pittance of the former, esp. compared to the PS2.

And what the hell are these comments? I never heard of this in the last 20 years.
And the Xbox was just a consolified PC with inferior games.
The Xbox 360, on the other hand, had LOTS of interesting Sega ports/remasters, like Guardian Heroes, Nights, Sega Rally Online, etc.(the XBLA library is a gold mine)
I'm a bit puzzled by this video. Are you sure sure you guys don't mean the 360? Cos it sure had plenty of great SEGA games!

I think it mostly stemmed from one company leaving the market as another was entering. But the misconception about Windows CE, exclusive games and focusing on some specific hardware caused it to snowball over the last several years, plus a couple wildly successful videos that pushed the narrative. As a day one DC buyer, I bought the Xbox day 1 also. I think they pulled a lot of the Sega fanbase back then (intentionally).
