I think the whole pick thing is a little bit of a misnomer. Richie will still use a pick in the studio. He just doesn’t use them playing live. There were certain sounds you just can’t get without a pick and if the song calls for it he’ll use a pick for that in the studio. For example, the song Fire, the nylon string rhythm parts are clearly played with a pick. And the flamenco runs are clearly recorded using a pick.
