    Fortune, my foe, why dost thou frown on me?
    And will my favours never greater be?
    Wilt thou, I say, forever breed me pain?
    And wilt thou ne'er restore my joys again?
    Fortune hath wrought me grief and great annoy;
    Fortune has falsely stole my love away.
    My love and joy, whose sight did make me glad;
    Such great misfortunes never young man had.

    The most living instrument. While other instruments manifest some part of a life, some part of a mind, this holds and entire person within it, soul intact.

    My first experience to a hurdy-gurdy was a young gentleman playing this instrument at a Renaissance Faire. I was mesmerized by it's sound and his playing! I hope to see more of this on youtube. Many thanks.

    LaCarusiella that turn handle turns a rosin covered wheel which plays the string, it also allows you to play a drone, which is why it probably reminded you of bagpipes. This instrument is fascinating simply because it operates under the same principle as a violin

    I see someone got part of the lyrics for Fortune, my Foe but here's the whole thing:
    Fortune, my foe, why dost thou frown on me?
    And will thy favors never lighter be?
    Wilt thou, I say, forever breed my pain?
    And wilt thou not restore my joys again?
    In vain I sigh, in vain I wail and weep,
    In vain my eyes refrain from quiet sleep;
    In vain I shed my tears both night and day;
    In vain my love my sorrows do bewray
    Then will I leave my love in Fortune's hands
    My dearest love, in most unconstant bands
    And only serve the sorrows due to me:
    Sorrow, hereafter, thou shalt my Mistress be
    Ah, silly Soul art thou so sore afraid?
    Mourn not, my dear, nor be not so dismayed
    Fortune cannot, with all her power and skill
    Enforce my heart to think thee any ill
    Live thou in bliss, and banish death to Hell;
    All careful thoughts see thou from thee expel:
    As thou dost wish, thy love agrees to be
    For proof thereof, behold, I come to thee
    Die not in fear, not live in discontent;
    Be thou not slain where blood was never meant;
    Revive again: to faint thou hast no need
    The less afraid, the better thou shalt speed

    Post 2
    I fell in love with this instrument as soon as I heard it and think it would be easier for me to pick up learn rather than say a lute or flute as you play with keys as you do in a piano and organ etc.
    Any advice and tip would be most appreaciated.

  • @neilbrook

    The hurdy-gurdy is a string instrument. The strings are bowed using a rosin coated wheel which rotates under the strings. Articulation of the wheel when turning causes the rhythmic buzz as required.

  • @Ishiku
    @Ishiku 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Cool sound. It's hard to believe it's just one instrument it makes a lot of "noise" and sounds like at least two instruments.

  • @GothicusApostolis
    @GothicusApostolis 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great! You're really skillful player!

  • @neilbrook
    @neilbrook  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @werewindwolf Pretty much correct but the trompette string is constantly bowed and the "chien" which is a loose bridge under the string vibrates against the soundboard. This vibration is the rhythmic buzz .It's sensitivity is regulated by adding tension to a string tied to the trompette string and wound on the peg in the tailpiece. Once regulated, any acceleration of the wheel gives the momentary extra energy to the trompette string and this causes the chien to vibrate.

    @gaga0000 there are many hurfy gurdy makers, but if you arent in europe or the usa it will be extremely difficult to buy one since they are already expensive in those countries (between 1300- 1800 euros a "basic" one)

  • @neilbrook

    For a hurdy-gurdy contemporary with the 15th c, only the Bosch model or similar would be accurate. My usual Bosch design is derived from the tryptich which results in quite a small instrument with not much volume. There is no reason that the same design can't be scaled up to give a similar sound to the Baroni though it would need an arched soundboard which is not accurate. These early hurdy-gurdies by definition lack the developments seen on later models .

  • @neilbrook
    @neilbrook  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    This instrument has 3 chanterelles, 2 in g' and a third at g one octave lower. It is the low string that is engaged at this point.

  • @neilbrook
    @neilbrook  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Small accelerations of the wheel force the buzzing bridge to vibrate against the soundboard. To understand it fully, you need to buy one :-)
    Cheers

  • @Sylkis89

    how is this rythm being played while the melody is flowing constantly? i thought that the wheel would create a constant sound, it's not a bow that you can manipulate with... and there's the question of how is it manipulated between different strings?

    Lovely instrument, and well played! How do you play the rhythm on the drone string in the second piece?

    • @KasranFox
      @KasranFox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The drone strings are on a special bridge called the chien, which is set to vibrate when the crank is turned sufficiently quickly. That vibration is what makes the characteristic "barking", and rhythmically altering the speed of your cranking lets you play a rhythmic component with your gurdy.

    • @dinnae
      @dinnae 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kasran Fox - Thanks for the answer!

    • @KasranFox
      @KasranFox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dinnae It's no problem! It's also worth noting that, depending on the complexity of the instrument, not all gurdies will have a chien (some gurdies don't even have done strings!).
      I love gurdies, though as a college student they'd be too expensive and high maintenance for me to get one right now. Maybe someday...!

    I can see from your website that you are playing the St.Thomas Altar Model in this video, I have a few questions.
    Firstly is the St.Thomas Altar Model suitable for someone whom is involved in a Wars of the Roses re-enactment group, i.e. time line/style wise? I have seen/heard the Baldrick but I prefer the sound of this one.
    Secondly I play the piano and organ, and whilst I know this is a wholy different instrument, I was wondering if the leap across would be too difficult?

  • @eleeyah4757
    @eleeyah4757 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there, I was wondering what that hurdy gurdy cost you? I'm thinking about learning to play one myself and I'd like to start with a student model of sorts, but I really like the sound yours seems to produce, so I'd plan on eventually getting a similar model.
    Considering that hurdy gurdies aren't the most common instrument, I'd still have to expect prices of more than a thousand dollars for a beginner on, wouldn't I? Or should I just go for one of the cheaper professional (more than just one of each drone, chanter, melodie string) model? Is there a way to build one myself with cheap materials for testing purposes, or does it pretty much have to be build by a proper instrument manufacturer?

    • @evilblondgoth
      @evilblondgoth 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He acctually makes them himself, and as someone who is also looking to buy one myself I have been warned off buying cheap instruments and certainly buying a 'make your own kit' is a huge no no. On average they cost between £1000- £2000 or more. I have spoken to a couple of fellow Medieval re-enactors who own Hurdy Gurdy as well as a 'Pro' musician who specialises in old instruments and the gentleman playing in this video is the person I keep on getting told to go to.
