Hi Sarah! I was lucky enough to be accepted for Northwestern's SLP program this year, and I was also accepted to UW-Milwaukee. I'd love to attend Northwestern for a lot of reasons, but the cost is a bit scary. I'm lucky to have family that can help cover some of the cost of tuition, but I'd still be in more debt than UW-Milwaukee. Do you feel like Northwestern provided you with opportunities you couldn't find somewhere else? I'm finishing my bachelor's at UW-Madison now and I love the Big 10 vibe, but I also want to have some level of financial freedom after I graduate.

Hi Kristin, I feel like I spent a ton on my masters at NU and I graduated in 2006. It was 10k per quarter then (I was there for 8 quarters) and I'm sure it's way more now. I'm still paying it off after 14 years! I have less than 20% to go... it's a big psychological burden to bear to have it hanging over your head. While I wish I could say that a new administration in government might forgive all loans, I think that may not be the case. Personally, I would go with the more affordable option. Northwestern is like getting the "brand name" education, but is that worth it? I chose Northwestern because it was in Evanston where my husband worked at the time. It just made sense. Also, I wanted a school that would be known around the country because I planned on leaving the state of Illinois. But we ended up staying in Illinois and a local university would have been just fine (I was also considering Northern Illinois University). That would have cost me $30k total and it would have been paid off by now. Anyway, Northwestern was great, but I don't feel like I got that much more out of it than I would have gotten out of another program. I've worked with other SLPs from Northern Illinois University and they are just as good as I am! I hope that helps!

Hi Sarah I wanted to ask you what made you switch majors from Spanish to SLP.

Hi! I actually never majored in SLP. I majored in Spanish and graduated with my degree in Spanish. I never even heard about SLP until years later and so I went back for my masters in speech :)
