From the Vault: Hank Williams Jr's S&W Model 629 Prototype

  • Even if we tried, we couldn't keep Brownells Gun Techs™ - and resident firearm historians - Keith and Steve away from Rock Island Auction Company, where they found a piece of Smith & Wesson history AND country music history rolled into one wheelgun. It's a prototype Smith & Wesson Model 629 .44 Magnum revolver, one of only 150 made, that was presented to Hank Williams Jr. by the company on his 40th birthday. The Model 629 is basically a stainless steel version of the Model 29, developed as a competitive response to a big-bore stainless steel double action revolver Ruger® had in the works, the Redhawk®. The barrel is pinned, the chambers are recessed so the rears of the cartridges sit flush with the rear face of the cylinder, it has target sights (red insert up front), and beautifully figured wraparound grips.... About as nice a Model 629 as you can get! There's a backstory involving the .44 Magnum, Hank Williams Jr, and his song "I've Got Rights" - sit back while Uncle Keith tells it. "I went down to the Mary Carter Paint Store. / Give me one of them Smith & Wesson Magnum 44s."
    We'll save you the time searching for the song. Here's the link: • I've Got Rights

    My parents bought me a pair of boots from the Mary carter paint store when I was a child. Lived in Cullman county, Hanceville to be exact for about two years. The best time of my life as a child. Fishing in the pond, shooting in the apple orchard, riding Honda three wheelers through cow pastures. Awesome place.

    When I turned 21 the 629 was first on my list, 64 now and its been just a great gun for me. Accurate, powerful, fun to shoot, easy to care for and looks bad ass. Would be on my short list for guns I would never part with.

    I purchased an early variant of the 629 in 6". About 3 years later I sold that 629 to a friend. I just had obtained another N frame I liked better. It's a S&W model 29-2 8 3/8"in factory nickel. 99% condition and way cooler than a stainless 629 in my opinion. That beautiful nickle finish had a gold hue in certain angles.

    Nobody could keep Smith and Wesson 44 magnums in stock, in those days....I got mine by luck, it seems the manager of the firearms department at my local Montgomery Wards was off the day it came in and was put on the shelves. When I went to pick it up (thanks to my states mandatory wait period) he was there and asked how I got it and intimated that I couldn't have it...seems he was buying every one that came in and selling them on the side for a huge markup. In those times unless you bought from a big box retailer who sold goods for msrp, you couldn't touch a 44 Smith for less than 2x retail. I still have the gun and it's wood presentation case.

  • @MrFixItGa
    @MrFixItGa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Maybe I'm biased, but I would be much more impressed with a gun company that gave the occasional gun to your average person instead of a celebrity. Obviously if the story is true, in this case it did boost sales. But I personally would be more inclined to purchase a quality gun from a company that seems to value their actual customer base as much as they do their celebrity parrots.

      MrFixit Ga69
      ~I 100% agree with you, I thought about that many, many times before. I am older and not at all impressed with celebrity worship either, fake as four dollar bill, false God idol worship (idolatry) is for brainwashed indoctrinated people. Somehow a superior human being is humorously laughable. I do enjoy and respect people's talent, art, & crafts but not the worship part which stinks. At least a musician singer has something to immediately entertain about but the absolute worst are royalty, pro sports athletes, also actor & actresses who memorized lines that someone else wrote. I would not walk across the street to visit with them.

      @@royjohnson465 I couldn't have said it better myself. That's exactly how I feel. I learned this lesson the hard way in the mid 90's. I think it was 94? I was 13 and I had my first ever major league tickets. It was a Braves game. They went on strike. All I remember reading in the paper was that it was over money. Something like two million a year apparently wasn't enough for them. It devastated me. I quit collecting baseball cards. Stopped my subscription to Beckett. Stopped playing in the town's little league. It screwed me up. Ihave sworn off pro-athletes and celebrities of any kind ever since.
      I moved on with my life and got interested in motorcycles and fixing things. That's how I ended up with my username. 😆
