Strong Seal Wrestles His Rescuers

- The rocks at Cape Cross are slippery and wet. The OCN team have to be careful to avoid tripping, especially after several injuries lately. Wally slips on a rock when he catches a seal, but he did not get hurt. He keeps his focus on the seal and does not let go. She tried hard to get away, the rescuers have to pull her out of rock crevice eventually to rescue her. she had pulled the net as close to the ocean as she could.
Antoine catches a second, very strong seal. They need 4 rescuers to hold him down, and Wally ends up wrestling him down to restrain him enough to remove fishing line from a very painful cut. He puts up a lot more fight than anticipated, a very good sign for the outcome of the rescue, we expect a full recovery.
Wally had an excellent rescue day - but did he find the stone he was looking for? 🦭

Haha i laughed when Wally found the rock. Hes fully prepared to get hurt while rescuing the seal the all of a sudden "I found a pretty rock while i was lying down". You all do an amazing job and im glad Wally got his prize.

It's always painful to see such a terrible cut on a seal. But the seal is amazingly strong and I'll take it as a good sign for his future. Very well done, OCN!
They have mentioned in the past that the salt water has a substantial disinfectant effect. Sort of like when we gargle with salt water for a sore throat.
Wally is ALL IN, fully prepared with gear and kneepads. And then... "Look, a shiny rock!" 😎

😂 Occasionally an entangled seal will not settle down no matter the efforts of the team, keeping them as still as possible is best for an efficient rescue.

I tell ya though. One of the real hero’s of what you do is those zippers on the nets. Like, I mean, really. I’ve never seen you break one, and the stresses that you put them through are just crazy.
That’s why they’re $1200 nets, engineered specifically for this purpose. It’s designed by state of the art technology to take a beating, but still, any engineering like this is impressive!
The zippers on the nets are crazy good. The sand and pulling, and I can’t the zipper on my wind breaker to work.
I’ve wondered just how often they need to replace those zippers! Sand and salt water, plus pressure from squished seals, are really hard on equipment.
Those zippers are really something. The OCNs are NOT gentle with them. I'm surprised they aren't destroyed with all the sand and the fur and the salt and the yanking.
I’ve noticed a better generation of nets too. Remember the old torn orange nets?
The first seal was a real fighter, while the second...she's a slippery customer who's really hard to pin down. Congrats for rescuing them both, OCN!

Another crazy day at Cape Cross. The rocks are so treacherous there so dodging and jumping seals plus trying to avoid falling on the rocks makes your job harder than the Beach.

Wow, you had two extremely determined resistors there. That first rescue was a handful, and the female pup took advantage of being left by herself.😳
I had to laugh, Wally, when you picked up your rock: my grandma loved to go rock hunting and would have done the same, as would I. One of the things she showed me by example is there are wonderful things around us if we just look for them. 💞 She would have knitted everyone on the OCS teams sweaters, scarves, and gloves if she were still around.
*No OBSTACLE is too great and no CHALLENGE is too difficult for the OCN Team. They’ll OVERCOME it no matter what!💪🏼🙌🏼*

I realize trying to catch the seals, especially on those slippery rocks, is dangerous work but, seeing Wally crouched down like a commando come bursting out of hiding only to land on his bum after using two nets to catch a small pup. And then almost get run over by a whole bunch of little ones, well, it had me in stitches. I love watching the team at work.
Someone really needs to come up with a shoe that will help stabilize your footing on those horrid rocks.

What an absolutely great job, Wally. Slip and yet you still keep a grip on the net with the seal in it. It's a good thing you're at Cape Cross rather than Pelican Point. The net would have become an entanglement that probably would have drowned the little seal. Then, you go over to help the others with their really feisty seal. You like an American rodeo bull dogger. On this rescue we had a right feisty one and a little pup who was having nothing to do with being trapped in a net until he got himself wedged, 10 out of 10 for effort tho lol. Fantastic work by the crew again.

What an exciting day at the office! ! ! ! That was action-packed! ! ! ! As I was watching, I kept thinking, Who does this??!!! What extraordinary character of these exceptional gentlemen. Do you ever need to seek secondary help from a vet due to infections, for any of the seals you come across?
😲 What a struggle you had, Team WAND and Likius, with that first seal 😧! Then the second seal ‘disappears’ . . . only to be trapped in the rocks! Both released from their suffering thanks to your dedication on their behalf. BUT there’s more - Team WAND ‘rescues’ some rocks from being entangled by ropes! Good on you all round 👏. I thought an anchor was a great idea! But you're going to need a real boat anchor for use in those rocks. Maybe use a long length of rope looped around the biggest, nearest rock?
For sand, if the seal is small, a screw in one should work fine.
I think the anchor could be an all metal carabiner clip on for whenever the crew need it, attached with some metal s-link chains- just lightweight enough to not slow OCN down when running and heavy enough to keep a small seal from moving it.
Hopefully you don't need to wrestle that 1st one again when it gets bigger..... phew!! Good Job as always OCN CREW!!! 👏 🙌🤜🐾🐾🙏😎😎🥰

I used to do that, but then I moved to Florida when I was around 16 and we don't have any rocks. I had to resort to buying them in stores.

OCN, do you think that after being pursued and "wrangled", they're so full of adrenalin that it masks the pain of having fishing line pulled from a wound? Hope so...

The adrenalin would certainly help in that situation for sure. Take into account also that they have been living with this wound for some time whilst it has never stopped hurting.
It's very touching seeing the ones that are entangled trying so hard to evade capture knowing that every movement is hurting like hell...

It's difficult to be graceful at Cape Cross with slippery rocks 🪨, and wet terrain. It's almost comical (even though it's not) watching Wally catch the pup with all that crazy, frenzy seal exodus. The big seal with that deep cut around the neck was horrific. It's awful that fishing lines can cause so much damage. Thank you team OCN for another amazing rescue & removing discarded ropes left at Cape Cross. 👏👍🙏🌍🦭🦦🥰
