    "Dancing in the Dark" is one of the prettiest tunes of this era and this is the definitive version. Knock one note out of place and its no longer as pretty and pure. Thank God there WAS an era when this type of music was popular and we are left with these recordings !

    If only we hadn't lost the recipe for making this kind of music.

    • @TheLaughingImp
      @TheLaughingImp 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      We didn't lose the recipe. The public tastes changed, and music from the 30s and 40s became old fashioned, just like everybody used to thumb their noses at disco until the last decade or so. Strong music styles get stuck in their era. Now we have corporate pop. On second thought, you were right. I wish we hadn't lost the recipe for making this kind of music.

    • @jakestilson1947
      @jakestilson1947 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The recipe is still there ,but the big swing bands were full of star performers and so expensive to maintain.

    When I was in high school in the mid '50s this record was probably the most requested and played over the gym's PA system at sock hops after home field football games. If a gal and guy weren't really, REALLY, close dancing when it was playing it was usually because, #1, the guy was clumsy as an ox and was stomping all over her feet, or #2, he had put his hands where they shouldn't be and she had told him to back off, or #3, she had a really big crush on some other guy and couldn't care less about the poor slob she was dancing with, and way too often that slob was me.

    • @brittonstokes
      @brittonstokes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      John Perks"pop" is an ambiguous term. Pop simply means that it is music which can be enjoyed by all- popular appeal- one may say. By all technicalities, Big Band Swing can be referred to as Pop music.

      My understanding is that Shaw outlined to Hayton what he wanted & he basically transcribed it. Shaw would further tweak it, after that, until it was exactly the way he wanted it. 🎶

      My clarinet teacher loaned me a 12 inch 78rpm recording of Artie Shaw's Concerto For Clarinet plus the sheet music , but it was too difficult for me! Artie had a lovely style as did Benny Goodman but Benny was more clinical and classical and Artie more dramatic and poetical. Two great bandleaders.

    • @gangstakittie7699

      Basically, yeah. There was a story back in 50' ish about how he hated it, but after he served and played for the army, he had a newfound respect-disgust relationship with the song. The soldiers wanted him to play it all the time, and since they couldn't have music he played it over and over. "The memories of home restored humanity to the soldiers" or something along those lines.

    What a combination! A sensational Howard Dietz -Arthur Schwartz tune, gorgeous Lennie Hayton arrangement and of course Artie's artistry. This version for me is on a par with the MGM studio version that Fred Astaire and Cyd Charise danced to in "The Bandwagon". If you haven't seen that clip I think it's still on TH-cam and should be experienced to help flesh out the story of the song.

    In reply to litvak1936: Did Jonathan Schwartz really say his father wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes? It would be some claim. The lyrics are by Howard Dietz. Schwartz was the composer.

    @beautman1 Either the preamp on my Pioneer SX-1050 or the built in one on the turntable. To be honest I don't adjust the signal for older recordings because I find it actually worsens the sound. A newer Newmark like this might be good, depending on the turntable you're using. I'd of course trade this setup for a good quality 1950s transcription turntable but if you're using a Dual or especially Gerrard then this is definitely a better setup. I do miss the automatic functions though.

    Off the top of my head, I've got 2 78 styluses, 6 microgroove styluses, and 6 cartridges.

    I have that one, somewhere... I'm almost done digitizing the Frankie Carle stuff I have. The Benny Goodman 78s are next.

    Perhaps it's a different Joy as this one was issued and made in Canada. The Sinatra record doesn't say where it was made.

    Smooth. Makes me want to dance with Myrna Loy in a 40's night club. ;-P
