"Only On The Web" CBS News correspondent Seth Doane travels to a supermarket in Chicago, where shoppers who use food stamps must struggle with hunger in the face of rising grocery costs.
Some funny things to consider. 1. Five Kids. Why bring children into this world if you are not prepared financially. Unless its the 1 in a 10 million chance you had quintuplets, you could have backed off. 2. Armani Shirt. I mean its possible it was a gift or possible like knockoff, but even still. 3. For someone who hasn't eaten at all and barely eats when she does, she isnt exactly skin and bones.
Learn to shop better shop stores mark down meat section and regular mark down aisle use coupons make your meat last with other additives like rice or beans and yes spend about half of it one trip then middle of the month go back and spend the rest make it stretch. I have been known to spend my whole $21 food stamp allowance in one shopping trip
First of all, before I say anything. Stop judging people. My inspection company likely paid MORE in taxes alone, than you make in income total. It closed due to insurance issues. I'm jobless. And fucking hungry eating peanutbutter and jelly in tortillas. I got food stamps today and plan on buying a decent fucking meal. I paid my taxes, I deserve it. I have kids too, the kids were had BEFORE I even had my last fucking job, back off. Again, clothing, cars, etc can be obtained before food stamps.
Look at what is in the baskets . Some of the most expensive foods one can buy. Start foods from scratch and make large amounts that can be frozen for later in the month. Skip the frozen dinners and Fruit loops. I mean come on. maybe there should be classes on how to make the food stamp budget stretch further, but that takes work that the underclass will have no part of!!!!!!
I agree, you see people with food stamps, and they wear gold jewelry, and ear rings, gold? How on earth can they afford to buy those items, plus having their hair , and nails done? Watch and see, these women have gold in, either plated, or real gold? Even plated gold costs............
Let me explain-- even though I dont get foodstamps. It is better to buy in bulk if you have 6 people instead of weekly. If it is 3 people. You can spend 100.00 a week. They have to save by shopping once a month leaving maybe l 20.00 for milk , egg, and more bread .
You have to shop wiser. Don't go shopping on the first of the month. Stores for some reason mark items up. When you do shop, don't spend all of your stamps. Shop with coupons,look in the store circular for sale items. Buy pasta, and spaghetti sauce, buy a big bag of potatoes if you have a few kids. Buy pot pies,and rice,buy corn bread mix,and pancake mix keep these items in the house, and buy can tuna and plenty of can soup. Buy eggs on sale.
im 75 this little change I get a month I can't have enough food. no food stamps for me. I just cook beans cornbread. fried potatoes. oat meal. People need to learn to cook.

Interesting that this very same network DID show two white families who, through job loss, had to go on Food Stamps: The Remenars, with 3 kids, and Andrew Balzer who has a wife and 4 kids. HOW they were portrayed was very different to the subjects in this video. See the video: America's Sruggling Middle Class, and The Newly Needy. Nobody is hurling racist names At those families are they? Very respectably portrayed and treated.
I grew up like that. Not long ago tho I'd lost my freezer full and fridge full of food to hurricane Micheal. It brought back memories. I just went ahead and et up my pantry first and I was grateful when I could buy again. I learned to do food stretching way back.
I agree with your general statement. People buy crap with food stamps and it pisses me off. I see it all the time. My income has jumped considerably in the past few years. However I still break my diet down to 5 basic categories: meat/protein, grain, vegetables, fruit, water. Everything your body needs, is within these 'elements' of diet.
They will be fine. They may not be able to get as much junk and soda and shit but that's a good thing. People will learn to stop eating soo much. Your whole perspective will change when you have to spend your own money.
I think the program needs to be reformed. Food stamps should only be good for real food such as produce ie: fruits, vegetables, uncooked meat/fish, etc. Food stamps shouldn't buy soft drinks either, ie: it should be good for things like Florida Orange Juice not Sunny Delight, Kool-Aid, or soda. I think the program needs these reforms. It may cost more but it will be cheaper in the long run because there will be less health issues due to poor diet. The only problem is corps wont let it happen.
I wish I could clean America up, and I'm not talking about making a small change in my community, I'm talking about literally getting into the cracks and corners and sweeping a lot of people away, polishing the good people and rearranging things to perfection. Things are not working we need to break this cycle of poverty even if it means some people have to die.
While the price of groceries is the same with or without food stamps, just think about the people not on food stamps still paying the price without any outside help. But, they are also the ones working their asses off, paying taxes and supporting the food stamp program. They also don' t get help on rent, power or anything else. I grew up...in a cold flat...no running water, no indoor toilet, one heater(oil in living room only) othe rooms frozen one outfit for school, blind water..income 600.00 a month..grew our on veggies, chickens, 4 pigs. So we didnt give up!!no phone, no car. We didnt eat Ramen..but wate can spaghetti. Funny how times changed today. I think we all need land to grow and provide for ourselves. We need to be taught. I miss those days now I know how to make them better.
Maybe so. But that would require a constitutional amendment; see 4th amendment. And if we drug test food stamp recipients we should drug test anyone that receives government funds. That's only way to keep it fair. But that means politicians would have to be tested so that law would never pass.
Plan your meals the food last longer and don't spend all food stamps at once because some people waste food. I know like me I see food and want to munch than you are out of food. I am not on food stamps but food cost so much that's how I do it little food at a time so it want go bad. I don't buy wasteful food like potato chips and junk food . most of the people also get welfare payments, an ebt card is actually 2 accounts ==a food stamp part and the part with welfare payments wich is accepted almost anywhere that takes debit card
My family has never had a cart that stacked full ever. And hey did anyone notice all the brand name stuff? My family is not on any government program. We work and pay for those. After taxes its lot of value brand shopping for us. Someday I hope to eat as well as those on food stamps.

I know, that's ridiculous there's no need for that. My husband and I get paid twice a month. One whole check goes to the mortgage and the other is for bills and groceries. I split it and shop twice a month. So in a way I only get paid once a month but I don't buy all of my food in one day.

I get buying in bulk. I easily feed our family of 4 plus our 2 cats on $450 a month which includes the occasional splurge of filet mignon, restaurants, bottle of wine, etc. The comment that stuck with me is the man with the overflowing cart saying he gets to eat meat at the beginning of the month and then he has to eat noodles the rest of the month. Maybe he should put the case of water back on the shelf, and he then he can spend that $4 on some FOOD for the last week of the month.

I can't believe the stuff I read on these posts. The reason the poor often buy "junk" food is it is often less expensive than whole grain healthy foods. Go to any market and see how much it costs to buy a loaf of white bread and compare that to a loaf of whole grain bread. The poor also have to buy food that lasts and does not spoil because they don't have the luxury of multiple freezers, etc. And what kind of food lasts the longest? PROCESSED FOOD. Have some compassion for those with less.
if these folks were smart they would buy bulk items and make there own food from scratch instead of buying processed foods then they would not have to starve at the end of the month water and tea are cheap instead of soda buy and stock up on meats that are cheaper in prices and stretch that out rice and potato onion garlic plan out meals

There are huge problems with the system. One guy I saw had $1950.00 on his card. !!! $1950.00 !!! I feed my family of 6 on about $400.00 + a month. CASH ! BTW--I work 7 days a week. I have always been frugal but this is ridiculous. I don't feel sorry for ANYONE on foodstamps except for the ones who really can't work due to physical limitations. This country is too fucked to realize we screwed ourselves. they are still slaves because oneday they will be alone without Uncle Sam.
Don't forget when people lower taxes is lowers your food stamps! The FDA is getting ready for 43 million on food stamps in 2011! And the Republicans want to lower taxes! You also need to know the US budget for food in 2011 is 1%. If you cut taxes you take money away from those things! If you thought it was bad last year, many have more Republicans in their state now! I have no objection to the notion of recipents taking a class or some sort of written pre screening that would address budgeting as well as how to shop for good food. As much as we all critize poor food choices made by those who receive food stamps, in this video, there is also criticism hurled towards those who eat too well. Everyone should read the salon.com piece about Hipsters on foodstamps. The letters in response to that article were brutal.
I do have sympathy, but really, I get no assistance, I pay taxes (aint't gonna lie, I don't pay much), and I stuggle to make ends meet. Sometimes after paying bills, it's "top raman" soup and ketcup with hot sause for the month. So I stuggle to support me and my family, AND hers (lady with 5 kids).

There are huge problems with the system. One guy I saw had $1950.00 on his card. !!! $1950.00 !!! I feed my family of 6 on about $400.00 + a month. CASH ! BTW--I work 7 days a week. I have always been frugal but this is ridiculous. I don't feel sorry for ANYONE on foodstamps except for the ones who really can't work due to physical limitations. This country is too fucked to realize we screwed ourselves. they are still slaves because oneday they will be alone without Uncle Sam.
Poor people, let me give more of my paycheck to help, its not like i need the money i work my ass off for, they really appreciate it RIGHT??????
Don't forget when people lower taxes is lowers your food stamps! The FDA is getting ready for 43 million on food stamps in 2011! And the Republicans want to lower taxes!
You also need to know the US budget for food in 2011 is 1%.

I have no objection to the notion of recipents taking a class or some sort of written pre screening that would address budgeting as well as how to shop for good food.
As much as we all critize poor food choices made by those who receive food stamps, in this video, there is also criticism hurled towards those who eat too well. Everyone should read the salon.com piece about Hipsters on foodstamps. The letters in response to that article were brutal.

I do have sympathy, but really, I get no assistance, I pay taxes (aint't gonna lie, I don't pay much), and I stuggle to make ends meet. Sometimes after paying bills, it's "top raman" soup and ketcup with hot sause for the month.
So I stuggle to support me and my family, AND hers (lady with 5 kids).
maybe they were prepared financially and had a good job right before the recession hit but as soon as they get laid off their kids are just born.
oh we had fans.....did you get free lunch... I use to think that was embarassing. We had to save credit everytime. Today you feel out application and get approved.

@danpakoman There used to be paper food stamp money but that was before 2001 at least in Michigan. now the card pretty much has a Mastercard logo on it because some people can even get cash back. for cigarettes beer & lottery tickets your tax dollars at work my friend......!
