Even though the sequels and lore weren't there yet, there's a reason the Predator blew itself up. In Yautja culture, it is considered extreme dishonor to return injured and beaten from their prey. The Predator would rather die than go home in shame. Also, it is extremely rare a predator ever spares their prey, so it probably took Dutch's mercy as an insult rather than compassion. He probably interpreted it as Dutch saying "You aren't worth killing" which is an even BIGGER middle finger to the Predator
It isn't a dishonour to return injured from a hunt. In lore, scars on a Yautja are a sign of respect and attraction. Wolf's face had acid burns, Ahab from the comics was missing an eye and mandible, Feral lost an arm and Scar still wanted to live despite being infected. It's more Jungle Hunter knew he was dying and like you also said, being spared is an insult. Plus his technology can't fall into human hands. They have spared their prey when the prey becomes a none threat. Look at Feral with Naru, his mind changed when she was caught in a bear trap. Basically, Jungle Hunter knew he had been beat and was mortally injured and he decided to go out on his own terms with no trace left behind rather than be spared.
it was clearly dying already. that's why dutch stopped. and probably it just was destroying itself to remove any technology from falling into the hands of its prey.

In the second movie the city hunter tried to activate his wrist computers nuke too it’s just his wrist gets cut by his own smart disk cutting the computer in half, plus the jungle hunter didn’t really kill himself because he was spared he had a piece of wood that probably weighed more than 400-600 pounds land right on his head and then crush his body he probably had major brain damage along with a few broken bones in his body too,he wasn’t getting up any time soon and in their culture it is dishonorable to leave a hunt half finished because they don’t want to leave witnesses but the biggest thing to them is they can never leave behind their gear and if they do it is an ultimate shame to their species and the clan they come from so the jungle hunter had to kill himself to one hold on to his honor and two to not risk humanity gaining weapons that would be to dangerous in humanity’s hands cause even though when they go on these hunts they take only a small amount of gear imagine how screwed a predator would be if say a human had a plasma caster without their Yautja honor codes dictating how and when they can use these weapons the fights would be extremely unfair in the sense humans would play super dirty

What makes this this scene so compelling to me is how Arnold is usually what comes to mind when thinking of somebody who is the peak of human strength but even then he is no physical match for the predator. And so it makes the scene more thrilling when Arnold has to rely on his mind and tactics to win
Arnie is a fab actor, and humble, notice that he usually plays a character that gets his ass kicked at one point or another, he may not have won any oscars for acting, but his fear of the Predator and the agony of getting beaten to a pulp is Very Convincing in this scene, that for someone who has never went to drama school or any shit like that, he is a natural born actor, and a lot of people don’t acknowledge this
Yep. That's the point. It's like getting into a fight with a gorila. You are outmatched from the beginning simply because he has pretty much more force than you. It's like feeling the sheer pressure from 100 kg dumbbell into your chest, comparable to 10 kg, or like getting trapped into a factory machine, a collapsing building or being runned down by a truck. Probably many victims of lions, crocs, bears etc felt that. The impotence facing something that is many times what your body can handle. That's fear.
To be fair, if we heard that laugh come out of a predator in a reboot/sequel today, we’d all mock it as ridiculous and say it “took us out of the movie” and “What the hell was the director thinking?” yadayada.
It’s part of their honor code. If they deem the prey worthy of a fair fight, the predator must remove his plasma caster to fight the prey on equal ground.

@@Abcq755 It's almost if the Predator was giving Dutch one final test of worthiness and laughing in satisfaction when Dutch "Got it" and took off. Its like the Predator was saying "Clever bastard got me" in his own way.
Self destruction is the last, and honorable resort for predators to die. If he didn’t destroy himself, he would’ve been considered a bad blood or dishonorable for letting Dutch have his technology.
How amazing and extraordinary this film is, because it is several decades ahead of the year 80. Even now, if you look at it, how was it possible in the year 80 to make a film as good as this?
5:18 to 5:38 The Predator's ghoulish laugh was the pinnacle of psychological horror in this film. This final act of terror by the Yautja was a way of saying "You killed me, but I'm taking you with me." Of course, it is a Predator tactic to try to kill those who killed them in order to preserve their honor as hunters and warriors, but the Yautja's ghoulish laugh in the first film only shows that he is prone to cruelty towards his prey. Psychological horror was the tool that made The Predator (1987) a film above its sequels.
I love how Arnie was perfectly willing to have his characters get their asses kicked, even at the height of his popularity. It happened in Terminator 2 as well, where Arnie is the inferior model of terminator and gets destroyed by the T-1000. It's a far cry from guys like The Rock and Vin Diesel these days, who contractually won't allow their character to get defeated, and even limit the number of hits they can take.
The sequence from 1:20 to 2:00 where Dutch just tries to survive the beating is just AMAZING in every aspect. The different views, the angles, the music, the incredible sound through Predator's ears (as Dutch sounds like a boy - 1:42). What a F#$ING movie!!!!!!
That was more than a flight between man and extraterrestrial. It was a battle of wits and pure survival. Though Dutch has stood victorious, surviving just by a tiny thread left his life forever altered. That's one hell of a bad day...

I watched this often when I was a kid. I'm 35 now and the scene where predator takes his mask off and then puts his arms out like "bring it on" is still intimidating as ever. Predator is absolutely perfect even to this day
The part where The Predator chokes Arnold and is examining him is such a cool detail that’s missing from the new movies. It’s like the Predator is thinking, “I’ve come here for many generations and made man my prey. They are soft and weak and make for good sport. But this one is different somehow. He’s not only outsmarted me using no more than mud and sticks, but has also injured me. This man is not prey. He’s a warrior. And I shall grant him a warrior’s death.” Freaking dope.

After nearly 20 years since my first viewing I finally realize the log was a counterweight for a snare. Like Dutch was initially trying to snare the Predator and when the Predator saw through that and went around, Dutch fell back on the counterweight itself. I knew the Predator knew something was fishy, but I just never knew that there was a snare trap there.

I still can't believe the Predator was defeated by a Looney Tunes gag.
In the real life, that hurts a lot
I thought I read somewhere that this first predator was a junior warrior and not as skilled or experienced as other predators in more recent films.
@@Josh-fp2qn wow, and even though he was a junior he killed several elite soldiers kkkkk
that was not how the trap was originally supposed to work. That was the counterweight to the actual trap, which the Predator avoided.
It even inspired Kevin McCalister to protect his home from the housebreakers in Home Alone 😅😅😅
This movie is a masterpiece 10/10❤️💯
1:14 I love just how *offended* the Predator looks right here after Dutch punched him in the face. And then he immediately follows up by punching Dutch right back in his face 😂
When the Predator hesitates before he throws away his plasma cannon at 0:12, he’s not doing it to get rid of a damaged piece of equipment. He’s doing it out of respect for his prey - the apex predator he’s been hunting…
That predator tried to kill Dutch after he lost, pretty dishonourable to me.
@@Abcq755
It's almost if the Predator was giving Dutch one final test of worthiness and laughing in satisfaction when Dutch "Got it" and took off.
Its like the Predator was saying "Clever bastard got me" in his own way.
Couldn't let his technology fall into human hands
Self destruction is the last, and honorable resort for predators to die. If he didn’t destroy himself, he would’ve been considered a bad blood or dishonorable for letting Dutch have his technology.
The greatest movie villain laugh of all-time. So badass
Most iconic evil laugh in movie history, Predator and Predator 2 did not need any sequels
One of the most iconic
@@KingCeeewrong
The score is so damn good.
Those slaps Dutch gets after trying to punch The Predator are hilarious 😅
🤣🤣😂🤣🤣 yes they are
Finally someone said it😂😂
@@noelogbeide7135 Especially Dutch's obvious discomfort on his face as each slap connects 😂😂😂
@@yasserkhan4279 yeah bro😂
Show me CGI as good or believable as the practical creature effects here. 0:32 That face alone trumps anything today by a mile.
That is a lot better than CGI today for sure

Still better than most movies that came out in 2023 😂
Kevin Peter Hall was the best thing about this film! R.I.P Kevin!
Love the bit when Predator senses the trap.
Yeah, the Yautja aren't dumb 😂🔥
Set a booby trap for predator
That glare he gives Dutch.
"You thought THAT was gonna work?!?"
this movie will be a timeless classic
world in 2000 years will watch this masterpiece with the same thrill as we watched back in the 80`s and 90`s
Even 3000 from now...best movie..90s forever...
Predator sounds like a super badass when it swears
Terminator vs predator
I LOVE PARADTOR
How amazing and extraordinary this film is, because it is several decades ahead of the year 80. Even now, if you look at it, how was it possible in the year 80 to make a film as good as this?
5:18 to 5:38 The Predator's ghoulish laugh was the pinnacle of psychological horror in this film. This final act of terror by the Yautja was a way of saying "You killed me, but I'm taking you with me."
Of course, it is a Predator tactic to try to kill those who killed them in order to preserve their honor as hunters and warriors, but the Yautja's ghoulish laugh in the first film only shows that he is prone to cruelty towards his prey.
Psychological horror was the tool that made The Predator (1987) a film above its sequels.
One of the best if not the best alien design of the pop culture. With the xenomorph of course.
0:59 that backslap was funny as shit.
This is the greatest Human vs Alien fight in cinema history!
One of the greatest

@@ryantogo8359 Not wrong
I love how Arnie was perfectly willing to have his characters get their asses kicked, even at the height of his popularity. It happened in Terminator 2 as well, where Arnie is the inferior model of terminator and gets destroyed by the T-1000.
It's a far cry from guys like The Rock and Vin Diesel these days, who contractually won't allow their character to get defeated, and even limit the number of hits they can take.
Arnold: "What are you?"
Predator: "Jean Claude Van Dam!"
JCVD was originally the Predator, but he left early on and his footage wasn’t used. It was Kevin Peter Hall who played the Predator.
Jungle huter predator is such a badass 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and this scene is a fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The fact that he managed to run and jump around the tree with that eyesight without tripping is beyond my understanding
Childhood memories 💜
The sequence from 1:20 to 2:00 where Dutch just tries to survive the beating is just AMAZING in every aspect. The different views, the angles, the music, the incredible sound through Predator's ears (as Dutch sounds like a boy - 1:42). What a F#$ING movie!!!!!!
I saw this in the drive-ins in 1987 double feature with Robo-Cop.
Best money ever spent
That's a great double feature.
Sound awesome af
U did Not....
BS!
Must have been a hell of a night
That was more than a flight between man and extraterrestrial. It was a battle of wits and pure survival. Though Dutch has stood victorious, surviving just by a tiny thread left his life forever altered. That's one hell of a bad day...
The predator battle roar…. Yes
They just don't make movies like this anymore. Running Man, Commando & Conan & Red Sonja. It really was a golden age of story telling.
I like how the predator was like wait a second 😄
The predator suit was so great
After all these years I've realized anything electrical is due to Fail
But not A Thinking Mind
When the Predator wrist Band short circuited He didn't have a choice but to Fight Man to Man
But Dutch used the Trees as the Predator did to drop a Killing Shot!!!
That laugh.....!
Just incredible timeless classic
You know what makes a decent film,,,,,,,,, authenticity........ If the story is plausible. This was..... and acted very decent!! WELL DONE LADS, WELL DONE
1:49 that gut punch tho…
They simply do not make movies like this anymore! The best!
“What the hell are you” says the predator to Dutch, wondering how it’s possible he defeated him.
3:16 "Do you think I'm stupid?"
Predator is a modern retelling of Beowulf.
.....I don't think you read Beowulf....
@@valdie91285 I have but that doesn't matter. it is intentionally structured like the first part of Beowulf according to the director and writer. Obviously it's not a beat for beat remake.
0:25 i love the deep humming sound when the Jungle Hunter's true vision comes in after he removed his bio helmet
Terminator vs Predator
This movie is as old as me. I so wish I coulda seen this in theaters at the right age. If an 8 minute youtube clip I've seen a hundred times can get me buzzing, imagine what a proper cinema can do.
Laughter is a Universal language
I was 6 years old when I saw this movie for the first time and it was at the house of my fathers cousin. I was marked for life.
Predator answered a
?uestion with
a ?uestion.
What the hell are you?
Remember that, folks.
That Dutch was one tough guy. I love this movie. One of the greatest of all times.
😂 I have seen this movie over 100 times and this was the first time I realized that too.
Favorite Schwarzenegger film. Even more than T2.
His best movies are Terminator,T2,Conan the Barbarian, and Predator.
The dislikes are from women who got pregnant just by watching this.
😂 Good comment.
this was arnold’s first role were he was not the alpha, and that’s another reason why this film was so good
When Predator jogs up the small hill & just casually walks toward Dutch while he crawls away.🔥🔥🔥
Still the best alien design in fiction imo
0:35 I wonder if Predator is considered good looking on its planet 🤔
It probably is, ngl. Dude had the most fresh drip out of any yautjas ive seen
Such an epic movie it was.
😂The first time I watched this movie was in the nineties. I was 10 years old at the time. I was scared for 3 days and could not sleep.
