There are TONS of bands out there that are worthy of headlining festivals nowadays, but none of them are getting a chance because festivals are stuck on bands like Slipknot, Korn, Disturbed, and all of the bands that got lucky enough to be in the area when metal was blowing up into the mainstream and basically solidified their slot as the "big boys". I'm not saying the bands I just named don't deserve to headline by any means, but if it wasn't for nostalgia, and they were coming out, nobody would care. I remember hearing and then seeing Slipknot when they came to the UK in support of their debut release- and they were absolutely on fire, re-defining the possibilities of a live show and it was truly brutal. Oddly enough, once they had access to higher budgets etc. they seemed to lose their edge.
Absolutely right. They stopped being Slipknot when success got to their heads. Then they (Shawn & Corey) started treating Slipknot like a business instead of a band. They quite literally run the group together, and every other member is treated as an employee. They sold out long ago, and with that, they definitely lost their edge long ago, too. Like most successful bands, their early stuff is great, and then it's a slow descent from there. Their new stuff is mediocre at best. It's partially the fans' fault, too. We keep their pockets full.

I told them that they were part of the problem. It applies to bands like Slipknot as well. I started with punk shows and then ended up going to raves.. between 2000 and 2010.. ive only gone to desert raves since 2010. Ive never ever paid more than maybe 20-30 bucks a ticket.. and that was festivals back in the day. Glad I never needed much for live music.😂
My dad used to talk about when concerts started to be 10 bucks a show is when he stopped going. Think Kiss was 10 bucks and he went and had a blast but he said not worth 10 bucks 😂 think this was late 70s or early 80s. Not long later they started selling gees of chron on the black mrket in cali for like 10-20bucks.. my dad tells me about that too which was in the 80s.
Most interesting thing about his response to future headliners and “crap bands” is how Slipknot were initially received, I loved their first record on release but come on now, they used gimmicks and the internet (as young as it was) more than any other band at the time, except for maybe Korn in terms of adopting the internet.

I think what he is saying is that bands/artists with potential are entirely overlooked for not having a huge internet following and being what survey data shows that people want. Here is my opinion no one asked for: If the music industry back then was the way it is now, we wouldn't have legacy bands because they never would have made it anywhere. The music likely would have died turn of the century.

@hattarapilvi The point here is that a lot of the bands seeing success these days are ones that have a safe, accessible, and most importantly marketable sound and image; clones of well established bands and styles. That phenomena is part of what makes them all sound and look the same. The bands that originally pioneered those things did so by being different from the norm and had an outstanding in-person human following. It was tough back then to breakthrough, but today its like the industry doesn't wish to bring amazing sounds to anyone ever again unless they absolutley have to. Only people with good intentions-turned plants seem to be able to break through as a norm. This is speculation based on experience and research. One good look around and its clear something is off with the collective music business. A closer look shows something is off with all of society and it's probably a cause and a symptom of the big issues.

The genre is actually bigger than it has been for quite some time. BMTH, Bad Omens, Sleep Token, Knocked Loose and others are killing it. And there is more and more push back every year from fans who are tired of seeing the same old headliners like Slipknot

Yes, bad music exists, nothing new there. My point was that there isn't much of a reason to harp on about bad bands when so many good ones exist. It's not like they asked him to give his opinion on the state of the metal scene specifically. He is taking time out of his day to shit on other bands when his own band has music they haven't released and that is apparently nothing like the sound we are all familiar with.

Yeah, they've played lots of festivals. But last year they packed up as a touring band, after a 40 year long career. They also sold all of their catalog and Kiss as a brand, to the Swedish company, Pophouse, that's going to produce the Kiss "hologram" show. Same company who has made the super popular Abba avatar show. Abba-Björn is one of the owners of this company
The future is scary. The old classic legendary bands like ‘Judas Priest, Saxon, Scorpions, Iron Maiden’ etc etc are on the way out. They can’t go on for much longer. And Ozzy is done. And they are not being replaced by act of the same quality, or even near the same quality. That’s just the reality. So festivals are gonna start looking very different. The fact is, we grow up in a Golden era and nothing lasts forever

@@thelolguy007 it has you're just looking at the wrong things. Rock 30-40 years ago was dominated by a handful of bands. You had a couple less popular bands that would open on tours but that was it. Now, it's much more spread out. Instead of 15 bands dominating you have a couple bands that are really popular and 100 other bands that are just making good music and doing their thing. The field has evened out a lot more so you can find plenty of quality bands you just need to sift through it a little
One thing here, only Clown is gatekeeper. Corey said a lot of good words about bands like Sleep Token, Jim is listening a lot of pop stuff. Opinion on their albums depends on what you listen. I listen a lot of technical and melodic stuff so for me albums like Vol. 3, AHIG and The Gray Chapter are masterpieces. WANYK sounds like concept album, I love it but it's probably too experimental for nu metal fans.

We can't rely on these older bands to headline forever, we need newer bands like Sleep Token to move into that spot. I'm not a fan of theirs, but that's irrelevant. The more modern bands we have headlining shows and selling tickets, the better it is for the genre.
Something that needs taking into account is how much older metalheads may not diversify what they listen to day to day, they have their preferences and stick to it. Metal evolves quickly now, the crowds want what they want. And if they're famous band members... that can be hard to get old timers to support bands who are going to become their replacement for headlining shows and ticket sales in a few years.

Every band that make's it big always says shit like "You know, when I was your age"...etc... The kids are gonna like what the kids are gonna like. Personally I think Sleep Token is crap. But I don't make decisions on who gonna headline a festival. The fans make that ultimate decision in the end. Lately I'm finding myself going back to my 80's and 90's bands to get what I considered great music. I think what Clown means is there's no originality anymore. You can tell one band from another as opposed to now everything sounds the same. The guitars, drums and especially the singers all sound like they're copying each other . That's what I'm hearing.
I am tired of seeing the same 20 bands taking rotation at festivals. Still, the issue is that other bands are not headlining material, and many bands playing at main stages are side-stage material at best. I went to Rock In Rio 2019, and the Metal Day was in this order: Sepultura, Anthrax, Helloween, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and ended with Scorpions. By today's standards, any of those bands could easily headline festivals, sell more tickets and have 2h+ concerts.

There's so much awesome alternative/nu-metal out there right now and I'm loving the shoegaze, post-grunge, and pop in there. He obviously doesn't dig very deep and I highly doubt the new Slipknot album will come anywhere close to the new album by Red Method. Bands like Red Method, 156/Silence, Stoneside, Dregg, cohen_noise, Foreign Hands, Anti-Clone, Banks Arcade, God Complex, Windwaker, Ocean Grove, Inertia, Love Is Noise, killthelogo, Bloomcells, Siilk, Moodring, Tropic Gold, and so many others are absolutely destroying it right now. And the fact that Slipknot are seen as "the standard" when you had heavyweights like Nothingface and SikTh in existence baffles me.
@@g.garcia7151 I'd start with the band Wayside. Go with the song "Weightless". It's like a nice mix of Koi No Yokan-ers Deftones mixed with Unreal-era My Ticket Home and Vexes. So you have a good mix of post-grunge and shoegaze in there. Also check out the song "Blur Into One", by Graywave as it has similar vibes. For a true shoegaze experience go for the song "Poppyseeds", by Spanaway. That whole album is just amazing 😍
I'll probably get crap for this, but meh. The guy who beats on a keg shouldn't be talking crap about anyone who plays a real instrument. I've never really cared for the guy. The 2 other musical gods that passed and left him holding the crown so he can rule things with unchecked authority, he's more worried about making clothes... whatever. I just hope Eloy can re-energize their enthusiasm, it's been a while since I've heard a new slipknot song and thought wow.
One thing I noticed is he never specified what genres had the bad bands/artists in though it does sound like he was inferring they were in the metal genre. It'd be cool to see legacy bands and more popular metal bands invite up and coming bands to open for them to help expose them to more people and give them a chance to make it big. The best example I can think of is Michael Crafter when he was in I Killed The Prom Queen inviting, at the time, a little known band on a tour with them and now that band, Parkway Drive, is an internationally acclaimed band. We need more of this again.

I agree with him to a certain extent about current bands. A lot of bands are similar and played out these days. But it's still pretty bold of him since they haven't released good music in over a decade since their 2 strongest songwriters are dead, and you can tell.....
No one is more niche than Slipknot is. When it comes to them, there are people who absolutely love them, and people that hate them and actively avoid their music. There is no in-between. That makes you niche af.
My issue isn't with newer bands taking over as headliners, but the fact that they pick some of the worst bands possible. I would much rather see a band like Vitriol, Ulcerate or Job for a Cowboy headline than Slipknot, or the shit modern bands like BMTH, Sleep Token and Spiritbox
You can’t be mad at a band for drawing fans to a show and for putting on a headline-worthy set. Bands have to make their music more palatable to a broader audience to experience a more significant amount of recognition and success. The internet makes it possible for artists to find their niche, core audience and extract as much engagement and investment from them as possible, but that is still just a very small group of people in comparison to a band that makes more “accessible” music for a larger audience. Fans will pay for quality. Fans will show up for an amazing performance. Fans support something when it’s really special and they feel connected to it. Bands just have to stay focused on their art and make music that more people can enjoy, while still being true to themselves and the art form that they are adhering to…
Some people just can’t accept change. I personally LOVE the direction metal is going. I do get it though, I use to listen to country a lot. When pop country blew up I hated a lot of it and took a break from country, but it’s coming back around.
Well, as he said, “The fans let the business people know what to do. The fans speak and the business people listen”. So this applies also to the “horrible bands”. These “horrible bands” must be having enough fans who are speaking.
The success of Slipknot is so awesome it’s the level where any given place you may only hear one negative sentiment about them from everyone there yet it doesn’t matter because way too much of the rest of the world will always love them
Sleep token isn’t horrible but definitely not something I’d listen to on a regular basis. Actually quite rare. Very niche feeling when I’m in the mood for that kind of sound. Bad Omens however is killing it for me personally and I think they have even greater heights to reach. Very amazing band imo

I mean slipknot started out being that wow band for me when I was 14. 1999 was a great time for music. I remember hearing and then seeing Slipknot when they came to the UK in support of their debut release- and they were absolutely on fire, re-defining the possibilities of a live show and it was truly brutal. Oddly enough, once they had access to higher budgets etc. they seemed to lose their edge.

Absolutely right. They stopped being Slipknot when success got to their heads. Then they (Shawn & Corey) started treating Slipknot like a business instead of a band. They quite literally run the group together, and every other member is treated as an employee. They sold out long ago, and with that, they definitely lost their edge long ago, too. Like most successful bands, their early stuff is great, and then it's a slow descent from there. Their new stuff is mediocre at best. It's partially the fans' fault, too. We keep their pockets full.

I told them that they were part of the problem. It applies to bands like Slipknot as well. These bands are going to keep pulling the same shit because they know the majority are going to support them regardless; unless it's something really heinous like murder or gRape (God forbid). Nothing is going to change the industry unless the fans do by not feeding the machine.

I started with punk shows and then ended up going to raves.. between 2000 and 2010.. ive only gone to desert raves since 2010. Ive never ever paid more than maybe 20-30 bucks a ticket.. and that was festivals back in the day. Glad I never needed much for live music.😂

Think Kiss was 10 bucks and he went and had a blast but he said not worth 10 bucks 😂 think this was late 70s or early 80s. Not long later they started selling gees of chron on the black mrket in cali for like 10-20bucks.. my dad tells me about that too which was in the 80s.
Most interesting thing about his response to future headliners and “crap bands” is how Slipknot were initially received, I loved their first record on release but come on now, they used gimmicks and the internet (as young as it was) more than any other band at the time, except for maybe Korn in terms of adopting the internet.

I think what he is saying is that bands/artists with potential are entirely overlooked for not having a huge internet following and being what survey data shows that people want.
Here is my opinion no one asked for: If the music industry back then was the way it is now, we wouldn't have legacy bands because they never would have made it anywhere. The music likely would have died turn of the century.

@hattarapilvi The point here is that a lot of the bands seeing success these days are ones that have a safe, accessible, and most importantly marketable sound and image; clones of well established bands and styles. That phenomena is part of what makes them all sound and look the same.
The bands that originally pioneered those things did so by being different from the norm and had an outstanding in-person human following. It was tough back then to breakthrough, but today its like the industry doesn't wish to bring amazing sounds to anyone ever again unless they absolutley have to. Only people with good intentions-turned plants seem to be able to break through as a norm.
This is speculation based on experience and research. One good look around and its clear something is off with the collective music business. A closer look shows something is off with all of society and it's probably a cause and a symptom of the big issues.

The genre is actually bigger than it has been for quite some time. BMTH, Bad Omens, Sleep Token, Knocked Loose and others are killing it. And there is more and more push back every year from fans who are tired of seeing the same old headliners like Slipknot

Yes, bad music exists, nothing new there. My point was that there isn't much of a reason to harp on about bad bands when so many good ones exist. It's not like they asked him to give his opinion on the state of the metal scene specifically. He is taking time out of his day to shit on other bands when his own band has music they haven't released and that is apparently nothing like the sound we are all familiar with.

Yeah, they've played lots of festivals. But last year they packed up as a touring band, after a 40 year long career. They also sold all of their catalog and Kiss as a brand, to the Swedish company, Pophouse, that's going to produce the Kiss "hologram" show. Same company who has made the super popular Abba avatar show. Abba-Björn is one of the owners of this company

The future is scary. The old classic legendary bands like ‘Judas Priest, Saxon, Scorpions, Iron Maiden’ etc etc are on the way out. They can’t go on for much longer. And Ozzy is done. And they are not being replaced by act of the same quality, or even near the same quality. That’s just the reality. So festivals are gonna start looking very different. The fact is, we grow up in a Golden era and nothing lasts forever

@@thelolguy007 it has you're just looking at the wrong things. Rock 30-40 years ago was dominated by a handful of bands. You had a couple less popular bands that would open on tours but that was it. Now, it's much more spread out. Instead of 15 bands dominating you have a couple bands that are really popular and 100 other bands that are just making good music and doing their thing. The field has evened out a lot more so you can find plenty of quality bands you just need to sift through it a little

Opinion on their albums depends on what you listen. I listen a lot of technical and melodic stuff so for me albums like Vol. 3, AHIG and The Gray Chapter are masterpieces. WANYK sounds like concept album, I love it but it's probably too experimental for nu metal fans.

We can't rely on these older bands to headline forever, we need newer bands like Sleep Token to move into that spot. I'm not a fan of theirs, but that's irrelevant. The more modern bands we have headlining shows and selling tickets, the better it is for the genre.
Something that needs taking into account is how much older metalheads may not diversify what they listen to day to day, they have their preferences and stick to it. Metal evolves quickly now, the crowds want what they want. And if they're famous band members... that can be hard to get old timers to support bands who are going to become their replacement for headlining shows and ticket sales in a few years.

Lately I'm finding myself going back to my 80's and 90's bands to get what I considered great music.
I think what Clown means is there's no originality anymore. You can tell one band from another as opposed to now everything sounds the same. The guitars, drums and especially the singers all sound like they're copying each other .
That's what I'm hearing.
I am tired of seeing the same 20 bands taking rotation at festivals. Still, the issue is that other bands are not headlining material, and many bands playing at main stages are side-stage material at best. I went to Rock In Rio 2019, and the Metal Day was in this order: Sepultura, Anthrax, Helloween, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and ended with Scorpions. By today's standards, any of those bands could easily headline festivals, sell more tickets and have 2h+ concerts.

There's so much awesome alternative/nu-metal out there right now and I'm loving the shoegaze, post-grunge, and pop in there. He obviously doesn't dig very deep and I highly doubt the new Slipknot album will come anywhere close to the new album by Red Method. Bands like Red Method, 156/Silence, Stoneside, Dregg, cohen_noise, Foreign Hands, Anti-Clone, Banks Arcade, God Complex, Windwaker, Ocean Grove, Inertia, Love Is Noise, killthelogo, Bloomcells, Siilk, Moodring, Tropic Gold, and so many others are absolutely destroying it right now. And the fact that Slipknot are seen as "the standard" when you had heavyweights like Nothingface and SikTh in existence baffles me.
Get real. Nobody knows these bands, and nobody will. I'm sure that your mom thinks you're cool.

@@g.garcia7151 I'd start with the band Wayside. Go with the song "Weightless". It's like a nice mix of Koi No Yokan-ers Deftones mixed with Unreal-era My Ticket Home and Vexes. So you have a good mix of post-grunge and shoegaze in there. Also check out the song "Blur Into One", by Graywave as it has similar vibes. For a true shoegaze experience go for the song "Poppyseeds", by Spanaway. That whole album is just amazing 😍

One thing I noticed is he never specified what genres had the bad bands/artists in though it does sound like he was inferring they were in the metal genre.
It'd be cool to see legacy bands and more popular metal bands invite up and coming bands to open for them to help expose them to more people and give them a chance to make it big.
The best example I can think of is Michael Crafter when he was in I Killed The Prom Queen inviting, at the time, a little known band on a tour with them and now that band, Parkway Drive, is an internationally acclaimed band. We need more of this again.

My issue isn't with newer bands taking over as headliners, but the fact that they pick some of the worst bands possible. I would much rather see a band like Vitriol, Ulcerate or Job for a Cowboy headline than Slipknot, or the shit modern bands like BMTH, Sleep Token and Spiritbox
You can’t be mad at a band for drawing fans to a show and for putting on a headline-worthy set. Bands have to make their music more palatable to a broader audience to experience a more significant amount of recognition and success. The internet makes it possible for artists to find their niche, core audience and extract as much engagement and investment from them as possible, but that is still just a very small group of people in comparison to a band that makes more “accessible” music for a larger audience. Fans will pay for quality. Fans will show up for an amazing performance. Fans support something when it’s really special and they feel connected to it. Bands just have to stay focused on their art and make music that more people can enjoy, while still being true to themselves and the art form that they are adhering to…
Some people just can’t accept change. I personally LOVE the direction metal is going. I do get it though, I use to listen to country a lot. When pop country blew up I hated a lot of it and took a break from country, but it’s coming back around.

The success of Slipknot is so awesome it’s the level where any given place you may only hear one negative sentiment about them from everyone there yet it doesn’t matter because way too much of the rest of the world will always love them
Sleep token isn’t horrible but definitely not something I’d listen to on a regular basis. Actually quite rare. Very niche feeling when I’m in the mood for that kind of sound. Bad Omens however is killing it for me personally and I think they have even greater heights to reach. Very amazing band imo

I mean slipknot started out being that wow band for me when I was 14. 1999 was a great time for music. But I don’t like the “we are god” mentality of the “rock world” when you call other music or other bands trash, that is only 1 opinion. This is literally the slipknot song “get this” happening in real life 25 years later. Music isn’t a business to me. It’s just my escape. Making it or listening to it or watching it live….i respect all that do the same. No matter what you do or play/listen to…you’re not above anyone else
