    More of this please.
    The little ones a Unimogs (Agriculture, mines and defence), the most common square ones are MAN trucks (maybe similar usage). The trucks are upgraded with frames, bit of power and exhaust etc., by the looks of it. The Mogs are pretty capable stock.

      Some of them are ready for Dakar rally raid.. but all are competing in same event & same course track but different classes.. 4x4, 6x6, 8x8..
      I love more the Ice-landing off-road formula.. that not just go up-ward on steep hills but also have hydroplane contest on muddy-lakes from Iceland..

    All Diesel
    Renault, mercedes, Volvo, Daf, etc.
    The rally features different segments -- speed , cross country, traps, like the one shown at the outset.
    All vehicles are based upon common Trucks -- however, you ain't going to see them delivering beer and oranges to your Supermarket.
    Great video, thank you.

    The trucks are a combination of ex-military, e.g. the MAN 4x4, 6x6, 8x8, and civilian trucks e.g. the Merc and possibly the Unimog. the trucks with the bonnets (hoods) are probably Russian Ural. The trucks that are missing are the Russian Kamaz and the Czech Tatra 4x4, 6x6, 8x8 that are air-cooled and have swing axle suspension being better than those shown. All these trucks can be found competing in endurance off-road events like this Breslau Rally and Paris-Dakar. Some of the trucks will be pushing out 1000bhp+ and exceed100mph off-road. Technically on the Dakar, the trucks are there to provide service support for the cars so have to keep up and carry a truck full of spares!

    • @Zankaroo
      @Zankaroo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The service trucks in the Dakar Rally are retired competition truck. T5.1 and T5.2 trucks are in competition, T5.3 are support trucks.

    Unfortunately, the MAN KAT 1, at the beginning, was driven by someone who had no idea how to drive it off-road....! This truck is the favorite toy of all soldiers in the German army and is actually "idiot proof" These trucks are slowly being replaced by new models, such as the 4-axle truck that stood behind them (privately manufactured expedition camper van) You can drive the old army trucks with historic license plates because they are over 50 years old. The VERY FIRST series could even swim and had a waterproof frame, but it could be that the truck was a "real" 2-axle truck, which doesn't have a front axle lock, so the 3- and 4-axle trucks are usually converted, as you can see in the video

    A lot of those were Mercedes Unimog, at least the smaller ones, used to get to ride along in one as a kid, though on "duty" as my dad was a firefighter, and they had a Unimog for fires out in terrain, and I got to come along on other duties, like being on site for races in case of fire, getting the best seat of the race sat on a hill by the track, so we could sit inside it and watch the race. :P

  • @deanbritton7436
    @deanbritton7436 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The first 2 right at the very start of the video are Mercedes Unimogs. There's a bloke who's got a 4x4 recovery service for the Victorian High Country who uses one to recover smashed up 4x4's. On a side note you should see some of the videos of these big trucks carrying a full compliment of logs in Siberia. They are usually towing a trailer and basically 4x4ing them out. Absolute madness.

      I've lived in the Victorian High Country for the last 20 years and can't say I've seen the Unimog you've mentioned once. Unless it's one of the two I've seen, one that just sits out the front of an old fire station a few houses up from the pub (army style camo) and another in matte black in the Wangaratta area. I hope one day I can see it in action in person. Maybe I should try bog my Hilux so he comes out.

    Funny how USA trucks (pickup) are so huge and can pull big trailers but USA semis are tiny in mass compared to 76 metric tonnes (~167 000 lbs) ones we have in Finland. New legislation allows long and interesting combos. Also in many places they had to put signs on bridges for maximum weight of 70 tonnes as it they were not designed to handle more.

    At least one of them, the pink/yellow one driving by at 7:10 is a Tatra 813 or 815 but maybe 6xx instead since the 813/815 are eight wheeled. Drive on all wheels of course. A combination of bogie and swing axles paired with the possibility to change the tire pressure in motion makes them very capable in terrain. Powered by an air cooled V12 diesel somewhere at 17 liters volume.

    • @peterpolanszki8903
      @peterpolanszki8903 ปีที่แล้ว

      the pink one was a MAN KAT too, just like the others, tatras has different cabs you can see the engine is behind not between the crew

    Tatra t 816 are street legal 8 wheel drive vehicles you can buy and drive in Australia, also you can get 6 and 4 wheel drive , the biggest you can buy is a 10 x 10 drive tatra vehicle, heavy industrial vehicle and military use in other countries, backbone has the internal drive shaft and gearbox , and all axles swing off central back bone , that is why wheels are at a angle some times

  • @PropperNaughtyGeezer
    @PropperNaughtyGeezer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    A Unimog is a beast off-road. He doesn't have a powerful engine, but his side reduction gears give him more ground clearance and his reduction gears don't even let him drive at half walking speed at full throttle in the lowest gear. As a result, he has an enormous torque at the wheels that he practically screws himself up the hill or through the ground.
    The MAN KAT is just cool because of the engine is behind the cab, therefore no tunnel in the floor, you can sit next to each other with 5 people and in the military version he has an air-cooled Deutz V8 engine and a hydrodynamic converter clutch.
    The special feature of the Tatra is a truck with independent suspension. I don't know which truck in the world still has it.

  • @ZhekUA
    @ZhekUA ปีที่แล้ว

    That is really trucks, and decommissioned army trucks. At the start there was an army MAN KAT that is towing MIM-104 Patriot for example. And at the end were 2 army Ural-375 of Ural-4320 (difference is that old 1960's 375 gasoline beast that used 1liter of fuel per 1km, and 4320 still producing diesel with 30-40liter per 100km)

    The very first truck that went through the mud was a Mercedes. It was same kind of cavin design that Scania has. Flat nosed.
    And the white truck after that one got free and had the "outdoor(something)" sticker that you read. Anyways next one is DAF tr7ck trying to go past the one with red bed.
    And in Finnish army I was a Guard Jaeger ,but I drove lot of the army trucks in the forest during our exercises and such. Finnish army had Sisu and Scania trucks mostly. 3 or 4 axels. And every axel was driving. We did very steep inclines and hills with those. Well having 6-8 wheels that all were pulling truck ,you can Imagine it goes to the tree if necessary.

    If you really wanted to you could buy a surplus Steward & Stevenson M1078 (2.5t) or M1086 (5t) , pending if you want 4x4 or 6x6, and build it in to street legal version of these. Or a Freightliner Unimog. The Freightliner Unimogs are the same model as the Merc Unimog at 6:46. Well I assume its a Merc Unimog because its in Europe, but I guess it could be a Freightliner one someone picked up off a US military base over there that was getting rid of some. And before anybody yells at me or tries to correct me in saying Freightliner Unimog, Freightliner makes Unimogs under license by Merc for the US military.

    the red one that got stuck in the beginning is a Tatra, a Czech truck brand, pretty much the best off road truck outside of russia. they came in 4x4 6x4 and 8x8 versions too. most of the massive ones are MANs but the ones with the slightly rounded off roofs are deffo Tatras

    This is a Trail, it has hardly anything to do with the Dakar Rally besides having trucks competing in it but even so, they're VERY different from the ones in the Dakar.
    There were no australian teams competing there, Outback Import is a french offroad accessories' brand.

    Hi Ian, it's me again, from Austria. I just wanted you to introduce to "ROC" being Race of the Champions, where Champions of different disciplines meet to race. There you can find formula one drivers in rallye cars for example, or Rallye drivers in Formula cars....battling against each other, including a ggod deal of fun! Here you see ROC Swedeen Ice+Snow 2022 for example: th-cam.com/video/7-bOwbspj2A/w-d-xo.html

    Those with the edgy front windows are german MAN trucks, original construction for military and civilian outdoor purposes with only ads for australian outback imports, and there were some UNIMOGS the most capable outdoor vehicles at all since more than 70 (!)years ( with the Mercedes star on the grill) : They went through this like nothing , you wouldn't and didn't even notice! They are all street legal but a bit upgraded for outdoor rallying. All diesels today, an there was even one east-german communist 2 stroke diesel from the 60s called Robur, which is latin and simply means strong. Check out old and new Unimogs, unbeleaveble, what they can do.Its that one in your thumbnail
