@@mattreedah That’s correct. A lot of people spewing BS fail to realize that when you put a 200 foot long hockey rink into a basketball designed arena, the entire upper bowl behind the goal is useless, because you CAN’T SEE THE GOAL BENEATH YOU!! I live in San Antonio. The Frost Bank (formerly AT&T) Center was built for the SA Spurs. We also had an AHL Hockey team, the Rampage. For Spurs games, it held over 18,000. For Rampage games, they collapsed the entire lower bowl behind the west goal, and didn’t sell seats in the upper bowl behind the west goal. In that configuration, seating was about 12,500. Perfectly fine for minor league hockey, but not for NHL. Without a MAJOR re-construction of the Delta Center, it will have the same problem Phoenix had with America West Arena where the Coyotes first played. AWA was and still is a basketball designed arena!
this you tube channel seems to look age as a decided factor for facility to get replaced, but as you already stated why a new arena is not the plan in Utah.
As a kid I watched several seasons of Golden Eagles hockey and didn’t have any issues. That was 30 years ago though and the Delta Center has gone through renovations since for more basketball oriented crowds. Here’s to hoping they build a new one.
No new Arena! Smiths said renovation. Not sure what the plan will be. Smith said the plan will be to build a village next to arena. Nothing wrong with Delta center. Just spent 300M for new seats, scoreboard, clubs.
Utah Jazz missed out having an apropos name. Slam is a noise, hockey is a noisy game with body checks and pucks being slapped into a net. Invariably, there is a fight where someone gets slammed to the ice. So, UTAH SLAM with the SL giving a nod to Salt Lake. A Batman type sound bubble with SLAM! inside logo.
That Delta Arena hockey configuration eliminates the high priced ice level seats near the boards. So only 12,000 seat while have fewer high priced seats. Great economics??? The arena will feel empty like during Covid and the crowds will barely be heard.
Honest question, why the hell do they ever build arenas that are basketball only in orientation??? Complete idiocy. There's been countless times where suddenly a basketball only arena needs to be utilized for hockey and it's always a terrible experience when it just doesn't have to be that way. Why would they spend so much money on an arena that's only good for a small portion of its potential purposes???
On what to do w/ Delta Center after new arena: Keep it for Olympics plus, if/when the Coyotes come back I imagine they will also take back the Tuscon Roadrunners as their AHL team, leaving the Utah team without one. They just put a bunch of money into making Delta Center viable for hockey. Expand the AHL into the Delta center to act as Utah's AHL affiliate.
That stadium can be renovated to fit nhl hockey properly, however it would have to be closed. Why? Because they'd have to dig lower into the ground to make this thing fit like what they did in Seattle. So because of that theyll eventually say new arena. They approved money for the arena and a baseball stadium. Two billion dollars, one for each sport. Nhl jumped on the opportunity first before baseball could make a move. It will likely be a new arena unless there construction workers can guarantee to a renovation without interrupting the schedule. Edit: they'll like play at the Maverick Center during renovations
The Delta Center did not host hockey during the 2002 Olympics, they were held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City (which is a hockey specific arena).
Name one other potential NHL expansion city that is being asked by the IOC to host back to back Winter Olympics. Salt Lake is committed to winter sports for the Long Haul. They have the finances, they have the government support, they have competent management, and they have the fan support. There is NO better Market for the NHL to expand into. Utah was the right choice. With just a teeny tiny bit of patience you will see that the Utah NHL team will have all of their needs met with facilities that live up to NHL standards.
Sounds like to me and call me crazy. Maybe they could’ve brought the team somewhere where there was ALREADY an arena ready to go like Quebec with a hot market for hockey…. Just a thought
The situation with hockey at the Delta Center mirrors the problems the NY Islanders had when they played their games at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for a few years: smaller capacity, obstructed views of the rink! I remember how many Islanders fans were angered about the bad seating and sightlines...
No, the previous owner of the franchise retains rights to the name and brand. That was a big part of the deal. We wouldn't want that name or brand anyway. Utah needs to make it its own.
I could be wrong but my understanding after watching the press conference they're not building a whole new arena they're just going renovate the whole arena the plans that were going to be apart of the new arena will be added to the delta center
9:31 Realistically, you'd need two separate ice arenas for the Olympics - one for hockey and one for figure skating. So keeping the Delta Center through 2034 with the potential new arena makes some sense in that regard.
They need to switch to Big Ice. The players are so fast, they need more room to skate. Start with one arena and eventually they'll all be converted. I don't care if it takes 10 years to get all arenas to Big Ice, it needs to be done.
Why not the Utah Coyotes? That’s what the Titans did their first two seasons after leaving Houston and moving to Tennessee, they went with Tennessee Oilers then rebranded as the Tennessee Titans. Arizona can get the Coyotes name back if/ when they build an arena, kinda like the Hornets though it wasn’t planned like this, they moved to New Orleans, Charlotte received an expansion team two years later, named the Bobcats, it wasn’t until a decade later under new ownership did New Orleans want their own identity picking the Pelicans which is the state bird, they even rewrote history giving Charlotte their history back from 1988-2002 and Hornets name, colors. I just think a generic Utah Hockey Team is so lame.
Utah is building a new arena for strictly nhl hockey & Olympic hockey ice. Jazz will keep their own home, salt lake will make a new home for the NHL team..
Still a huge upgrade over Mullet Arena, and it's not like they're going to be playing there that long. They're getting a new arena for the Jazz & Utah NHL team in the next few years.
I remember Barclays Center's Hockey Configuration when I went to see the Islanders games there, It's was the same thing what the Coyotes dealt with in their early years where they playing out same arena as the Suns. The setup at the Delta Center is even worse that both ends of the ice surface are obstructed, unlike Footprint Center & Barclays Center both had one end of the ice surface was obstructed. One other problem of note with Barclays Center that needs to be known, The ice quality in that building was very poor and was difficult to maintain.
They should use the Delta Center for the figure skating and the short track speed skating events for the 2034 Winter Game. Just like they did with the Pacific Coliseum the former home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, when they used it for short track speed skating and figure skating during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games
Are you attempting to create controversy when this has been covered by the league and the ownership group. I turned this off knowing full well a 5000-seat barn is far removed from industry standards even at the AHL level.
Delta Center hosted figure skating and short track speed skating for the 2002 Olympics, so the obstructed views weren't as big of a deal. The Maverik Center, home of the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies, is where Olympic hockey was held.
Not sure the exact plans but the gateway center is across the street from the Delta Center and was an entertainment district for the 2002 Olympics that’s rather died over the years. If they tear it down and build the new arena there, they could tear down the delta center and use that land as part of the new entertainment district along with any leftover land from the gateway
*hence* they are remolding it over the next few summers with new technology to fit 17.5 for hockey, and we had 30k show up today just for play introductions....
Earth to Phil. Renovations don’t cost much. So it doesn’t matter if they renovate Delta Center while the New Arena is being built. For example the Rams renovated the LA Coliseum while Sofi Stadium was being built.
There probably is pressure to get as many seats since hockey depends on arena attendance more so than other pro sports. They may want to have 2 arenas available for the Winter Olympics.
They’ve got their work cut out as far as a renovation goes. I thought they had $900 million or some ungodly sum hoisted from the public for a new arena already? You can get an arena built in 24 months without having to pay premiums for materials. Anything short of that, the costs goes skyward. But 900 million?? Just put the shovels in the ground and design it while they’re building the foundation. Sheesh
Smith is being pressured and arm twisted by bureaucrats with short term goals in keeping them in downtown SLC. The only long term solution is to demo the Delta center and rebuild. A reconfigured expensive make over to just get 17k hockey seats will not be a long term solution and we will be right back to we need a new stadium. Hate to see the Delta Center go but in the end if keeping both teams downtown is the goal, it is the only way.
Correct. They simply collapsed the seats behind the west end goal, and didn’t sell seats in the upper west end bowl. This resulted in about 12,000-13,000 good seats for hockey. Which is fine for AHL hockey. This is exactly the same problem that the Coyotes had when Winnipeg 1.0 moved to Phoenix. America West Arena in downtown Phoenix was built for Suns basketball, not hockey. Frustratingly, Toyota Center in downtown Houston is already perfectly suited for NHL hockey. It was built to be compatible for hockey right from the get-go, and holds over 17,500 for hockey. I THOUGHT the main reason Bettman approved the move to SLC was because they promised a new hockey-compatible arena would be built in SLC. Looks like Ryan Smith and SLC are already reneging on that promise!!! 🤮
Utah Hockey Club sounds like a good permanent name. All of these other names are just copies of other places or weird. You can use Utah Hockey Club as the name of the team and have a mascot of something like a Yeti (Whatever a Yeti is) or some other creature.
The Delta Center should do a complete renovation to better accommodate the new NHL Utah team. The Jazz hopefully will agree to make something happen now that it has a new indoor neighbor. I'm guessing that if there will be a renovation, it'll cost about (I'll just throw out a random number) $500M. I could be wrong and it may cost more than that. If I'm wrong, do share your opinions peeps.
It is weird that they built the arena for the 2002 winter Olympics, where it hosted the hockey tournament and figure skating finals, and they didn’t build something that had better ice viewing potential.
If they wanted a more viable arena there are other cities that should have been considered to relocate the Coyotes to and then go to Salt Lake City as an expansion after a proper arena is built. It is stupid that for Canada there are insane requirements to get a team and in the US there are virtually none other then the money.
The answer to your question is that if Smith keeps them in downtown Salt Lake and decides renovating the Delta center doesn't really work, it will be demolished and a new arena built in its place. That is probably the best solution. Either way, if renovating or demo and rebuild happens, neither the Jazz or hockey will be playing there for at least 2 yrs. I don't see how the Maverick center does not be used for hockey and the Jazz playing at the University of Utah, which they have done before. Don't know where you got 18+k for basketball but I believe for basketball the number is around 20.7k.
Be easier probably but costs more money Ryan Smith has money build new arena in same location or near by make it for both sports like so many do. Play in Delta Center till new stadium ready. This reminds me of Barclay's in Brooklyn was liker that for hockey and failed for Islanders not saying happen here. Can do minor stuff to adjust for it if can't get new arena build quickly
Ryan Smith said at his presser that they plan to renovate and *NOT* build a new arena. He seemed pretty adamant about that and wanted to focus more on the neighborhood around the arena. He seemed to not be concerned at all about renovating versus building a totally new building because the new arena site would not be in the downtown area where he wants to keep the arena for both the Jazz/hockey team AND the Olympics, should they win that bid.
I believe Smith knows better than that and renovating the Delta center will not work long term.. He has to appease or feels obligated to appease a bunch of bureaucrats that only care he stay in Salt Lake city. We need a new arena and that is the reality. 17k will not cut it and we all know it. If he feels they should stay in downtown Salt Lake the long term solution is to just demo the Delta center and rebuild.

I think what we’re going to end up with is a lower bowl that’s a completely different shapes than the upper bowl.
The obstructed view seats are in the upper bowl. The lower bowl seats have no room to come out
@@mattreedah That’s correct.
Can you link to these renderings?
this you tube channel seems to look age as a decided factor for facility to get replaced, but as you already stated why a new arena is not the plan in Utah.
If you remember the 2002 Olympic Hockey was not played at the Delta Center. It was at a minor league building in the suburbs the seated 8,000.
Yeah IIRC the Delta Center was used for figure skating and short track speedskating
Would having glassed in executive suites behind the nets work so no netting is needed? A wall of suites with not netting obscuring the view?
As a kid I watched several seasons of Golden Eagles hockey and didn’t have any issues. That was 30 years ago though and the Delta Center has gone through renovations since for more basketball oriented crowds. Here’s to hoping they build a new one.
Kinda strange why the video ended w/ a shot of downtown Ogden, Utah. -- now, I'm confused.
That’s not worth that just make a new arena.
no where downtown to put it and part of them coming here was them staying downtown
Coyotes players will be confused by home crowds larger than 8-K people. 🙄
Ryan Smith has said they are renovating one side of the arena this off season and the other half on the next off season
The plan is to renovate to accommodate both. Ryan Smith has said its at 16,500 for hockey as of now
That Delta Arena hockey configuration eliminates the high priced ice level seats near the boards.
500 million Reno sounds insane, you would think that could a long way to purchase a new building
The reason why they dont want to build a new arena is because nobody wants to leave downtown.
The Delta Center did not host hockey during the 2002 Olympics, they were held at the Maverik Center in West Valley City (which is a hockey specific arena).
The other factor is that the nhl basically pushed out a bad owner too
Name one other potential NHL expansion city that is being asked by the IOC to host back to back Winter Olympics.
Wow gonna add 5,000 seats to 12,000 to make it 17,000 set arena. Golden eagle days they put up seats behind the removed section in one end.
900 Million Bucks. We’ll have a new arena ready in 2 seasons.
The Coyotes aren't going to be the "Utah Coyotes" when they move to Salt Lake City?
No, the previous owner of the franchise retains rights to the name and brand. That was a big part of the deal. We wouldn't want that name or brand anyway. Utah needs to make it its own.
I could be wrong but my understanding after watching the press conference they're not building a whole new arena they're just going renovate the whole arena the plans that were going to be apart of the new arena will be added to the delta center
I can't continue to watch this. You're facts are severely skewed
12,000 is more then enough for hockey in Utah at least it will appear to be full, Bettman can hail great success
9:31 Realistically, you'd need two separate ice arenas for the Olympics - one for hockey and one for figure skating. So keeping the Delta Center through 2034 with the potential new arena makes some sense in that regard.
I don’t mind watching this dude’s channel. He does cover a lot of interesting stuff. But goodness, his lack of research is glaring!!
Theyre moving for the luxury boxes. The owner doesnt care about individual seats per se.
Bring back the WHA. Chicago Cougars.
Didn't they have money approved for a new arena?
Not being built till later next year
theres money spproved it can be used to convert or build new
They could temporarily play at Maverik?
It'll be Delta and eventually their own arena later
I remember Barclays Center's Hockey Configuration when I went to see the Islanders games there, It's was the same thing what the Coyotes dealt with in their early years where they playing out same arena as the Suns. The setup at the Delta Center is even worse that both ends of the ice surface are obstructed, unlike Footprint Center & Barclays Center both had one end of the ice surface was obstructed. One other problem of note with Barclays Center that needs to be known, The ice quality in that building was very poor and was difficult to maintain.
Mullets Ice was some of the best :)
Name the team the Salt Lake City Blizzard
He said he’s gonna build a new arena
They should use the Delta Center for the figure skating and the short track speed skating events for the 2034 Winter Game. Just like they did with the Pacific Coliseum the former home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, when they used it for short track speed skating and figure skating during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games
Why are we showing a arena in La for the the example
Oh god they need to fix that arena asap. Olympic rinks are larger but they don’t mind playing on an NHL six rink if needed like 2010
This is still better then playing in a shit college arena 😂
The Mullet was the best place to watch a NHL game and I have been to a few of them
It was a super cool place…but I doubt youve ever been there. All AZ truly needs is a true owner not some POS from Cali.
Give Utah a chance people.
That embarrassment of a franchise is out of Arizona, its a win.
The Delta Center was made for basketball
They have no real plan on what do do....CHECK!
The old homeless shelter killed The Gateway. Was such a shame.
I have a better question why do they have hockey teams in places that are not big with hockey?
No one is confused but you. They were super clear on how they would be approaching this in the press conference.
This is the same guy who said the NBA play in was "too confusing" last year
They’ve got their work cut out as far as a renovation goes. Sheesh
The 900 million will be coming from tourists not the people here
@@jeron3966
Nope.
It will be an increase on sales tax to SLC residents.
The problem is that lawmakers want the teams to remain in downtown, and there's currently no viable property downtown to build a new arena
@@Utonian21 they’re looking at Glendale area it’s still technically part of downtown
So the same situation they originally had at America West
The Delta Center reminds me of the Spectrum where the Flyers played in their Stanley Cup period.
The Spectrum was designed to accommodate hockey. DC not so much.
I like the “Blizzard” name.
That's similar to how it was here in San Antonio when we had the AHL team here. One end basically had no seats.
RIP arizona coyotes
The Delta Center should do a complete renovation to better accommodate the new NHL Utah team. The Jazz hopefully will agree to make something happen now that it has a new indoor neighbor. I'm guessing that if there will be a renovation, it'll cost about (I'll just throw out a random number) $500M. I could be wrong and it may cost more than that. If I'm wrong, do share your opinions peeps.
You need to do a video on these Entertainment Districts and the Corruption involved with them! Leading all the way up to Commisioner Bettman
It is weird that they built the arena for the 2002 winter Olympics, where it hosted the hockey tournament and figure skating finals, and they didn’t build something that had better ice viewing potential.
It opened in 1991, long before the Olympics, and as a basketball arena. It didn't host hockey during the Olympics, just figure skating.
It was built for the Utah Jazz and the Jazz only. No one cares about hockey.
If they wanted a more viable arena there are other cities that should have been considered to relocate the Coyotes to and then go to Salt Lake City as an expansion after a proper arena is built. It is stupid that for Canada there are insane requirements to get a team and in the US there are virtually none other then the money.
You didn''t watch the press conference. We are not getting a new arena. There updating Delta Center.
At least they have a said: "arena"! I hear Alex and Coyotes Trademark are still searching...
I think you renovate the Delta Center and build a new arena as if they do get the Olympics you need more than one arena, Just a thought!
Utah Yeti has my vote 🗳️
Their more than likely gonna use the name Utah Hockey Club for one season. Until season 2
Can't build a new court for 500 million?
