    I love my Mini Cooper SE! I got the mid-level one for about $31K, used the California $1500 rebate as my down payment (nothing out of pocket!). And I just got my $7,500 tax credit yesterday! My commute is 9 miles each way, a full charge lasts me almost the full work week. Also, I get to charge at work for free! My employer gets incentives and rebates for providing electric car charging. If not, I charge at the many charging stations here in the South Bay, it takes about 20 minutes to charge from 20% to 80% using a DC connection. I'll charge at the Target while getting groceries! It costs about $8 for almost a 100% charge for that 100 miles, not bad considering a car that goes 24 miles a gallon in the city would cost about $20 for that in gas. Also, maintenance is so cheap, my next scheduled maintenance is on May 2023! I'll just need to replace the brake pads, which i rarely use because of the awesome regenerative braking. It is a niche car, but if you live in the city, it makes a whole lot of sense.

    Good review. Definitely a niche car. We’ve owned 3 Minis with zero reliability issues. My commute is 14 miles a day total, so this would work just fine. Glad to hear it handles as well as the gas models. Thanks!

      That's good to know. I'm a little wary of European cars. One would think that since this particular is all-electric, it would make reliability even better with not having to deal with transmissions/oil/fuel.

      @@stupid8911 I had nightmares with my mini. The engine/transmission system starts to require constant repairs after turning 5 years old. I finally gave up. I would assume the all electric would eliminate all those. We shall see.

  • @superhostingtucson3302

    For everyone dismissing this as a 2nd car, keep in mind you can get this AND a 15k reliable used car (or truck like I did) and still have 10k left in the bank over a model y. I was considering the Kona EV as my only car but after looking at the Better Route Planner travel app, it’s not much less charging time to get to my road trip destinations with the mini SE (still double the Tesla model y charge time). The fact is that electrify America is not anywhere near as ubiquitous and reliable as the Tesla supercharges as of now. If I traveled a lot, there’s no way I would get anything other than a Tesla. I owned a BMW i3 for 3 years and rarely ever came close to it’s 75 mile range in a day. The handful of road trips in that time were taken in my girlfriends car. I wanted the new 120ah i3, but even used ones are more than this (with the tax rebate). After watching Bjorn Nyland’s video of him getting better range in the SE than the i3 120ah, I was sold.

    My fiance has a 2012 Mini with 90K miles with surprisingly zero reliability issues. I am praying to God it stays that way for 2 to 3 more years. But this Mini Cooper SE looks amazing. She definitely doesn't need more that 114 miles in range as she works from home and we typically use her car as our "weekend car" I guess everyone's needs are different

It's great to see Mini going electric but I hope Mini someday gets more modern and puts Android Auto in their cars. Until then I'm sticking with my much more powerful and useful Focus RS which has Android Auto. More power to all the hot hatches like the Mini Cooper though!

    I know a guy whose wife bought one and it failed at 800 miles. The dealer has no idea what's wrong and has ordered a new battery among other things. The dealers are poorly trained to work on these things. But it looks like the electric Mini is just as unreliable as the gas version so far.

    • @wzDH106

      I haven't heard of such an issue online, at least nothing to your friend's extent. Ours is well past 6K miles with no issues.
      It's worth noting the MINI SE shares more with the BMW i3 than previous MINI models, as the battery logic software and electric drivetrain are straight out of the i3..... minus the subjective looks. The i3 is a relatively bulletproof vehicle in regards to the battery and propulsion.
      .... but there are always mechanical horror stories, as with all vehicles I guess.

    • @Ben.Royals

      200 mile range would mean more batteries and therefore a more expensive base price. Here in the UK the car is rated for 145 miles and many people seem to average 130 miles summer and 100 winter. Three reasons Mini went with the battery count and range they did:
      1. To not loose that Mini handling everybody talks about and give this car nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution low down
      2. Uses the same platform as the petrol version and therefore is made on the same production line to bring the cost down and simplify production
      3. From Mini's research most of their customers only do 20 miles a day so this car can easily handle the Monday - Friday commute with a top up Friday night to use on the weekends
      I have a Level 2 on order which is the mid trim level here in the UK and they literally can't make them fast enough, at least a 4-6 month wait for orders here.

    • @scottplunkett7106
      @scottplunkett7106 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Ben.Royals I can understand why they made the choices they made. But that range eliminates it from some potential customers. I'm a mini owner, and would love to go electric, but I routinely need longer range. I get it - I'm not the niche that they've decided to focus on. But I wish I was.

    • @Ben.Royals
      @Ben.Royals 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@scottplunkett7106 yeah sadly just the limit we have at the moment. Though hopefully when they electrify their whole range in a few years, the price of batteries will make the overall EV cost on par or likely cheaper than current ICE equivalents. There would also be weight saved by being a built as an EV from the start to add more and newer efficient battery tech to raise the range and charge speeds. So sad for now that they aren’t for everyone but exciting for the future and possibly a win for your wallet.

    • @nicolescats2
      @nicolescats2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ben.Royals I think it comes down to commute length differences in America versus the UK. Americans are perfectly happy getting a 220 V charger installed so they can charge overnight every night, the question is can their car make it all day on one charge. For someone like my dad, the answer is no. His one way commute pre-covid was over 60 miles of almost entirely highway driving (Topeka to downtown Kansas City). A Tesla could've gotten him there and back, but he'd have to watch how much electricity he was using if he wanted to run errands without charging at work. With how much urban sprawl we have here (Kansas specifically), you don't have to be a long-distance commuter like my dad was to run out of charge in your electric mini. I understand why they made the decision they did, it works for UK customers, and for Americans with shorter commutes. But some Americans are understandably disappointed to find out that they can't buy one unless they start having guaranteed electric charging access at work.

    I drove the car for a week. Driving behavior is great, ergonomics are great. But the manufacturing and material of the buttons is embarrassingly cheap with poor response times, especially on the touchscreen. The functionality of the cruise control is illogical and poorly thought out. By the way, the car does what it wants with the settings. Every time you get in, the settings are different. Sometimes the lady operating the navigation system speaks English, sometimes she speaks French, without you having changed anything yourself. The navigation system is also really bad. Illogical structure and confusing. Today there shouldn't be such bad navigation systems anymore. Poor response time, operation is not intuitive. If you zoom in on the map, the navigation system zooms out again on its own and you have no option to change that. Can't find many places and guides you through the menu very poorly. And stop with the side socket. The vast majority of charging stations are not built like this. This car is for nostalgics. For this money there are far better cars in this category.
