      However, such battles did occur, of course, rarely. Another example of this is the Battle of Lützen (1632, Thirty Years' War
      ). The death of Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden was not known to many soldiers during the battle, and the king was thought to have disappeared by several people, due to, among other things, the fog. After the king's death, his deputy, Bernard of Saxe-Weimar
      took over the command, reorganizing the broken center (which broke not because of the king’s death, but because the center’s battle line slipped too far, creating a gap and the Imperial cavalry breaking through of it) of the army's first line, and then attacking the second reserve line as well. Eventually, the Swedes and their allies won a victory over the Imperial forces.

      The legend goes that when Vardan died in battle a soldier picked up his cape and wore it. All the men saw the cape and thought that their general was still fighting so they too kept fighting. Every time the solider wearing the cape died another would pick it up and charge forward.

    Vardan’s battle speech to his soldiers,- “Now, I beseech you, oh my brave comrades-in-arms, especially since many of you are better than me in courage and higher in honor and devotion to the throne of fatherland. But when, by your own will, you have appointed me your leader and supreme commander, let my words seem agreeable and desirable to the ears of elder and younger ones. Let us not be afraid of the multitude of pagans, nor let us turn our backs on the great sword of mortal men, that if the Lord gives us victory, we may destroy their power to rise to the truth, and if the time comes to end our lives in this holy war, let us gladly accept it and let us do not mix cowardice into courage and bravery”. Historian Yeghishe, the witness of the battle.

      Ancient history is full of cultures that held on, because empires don't often assimilate - in fact, they really only care about political stability (excusing special interests of elites). Assimilation is mostly a phenomenon of modern nationalism. There is mention of 'romanization', but it took centuries, and the roman empire existed for at least that long.

    Thank you for covering this battle. The Battle of Avarayr has been one of the most important battles in Armenian history. It was a battle of not pragmatic political calculation on the part of Armenia but a battle for their identity, self-respect and anti assimilation with Persia. The word of the day for Armenians was "Conscious Death is Immortality" and this battle resonated through our history from the Middle Ages (victorious battles of Vahan Mamikonyan against Persians) up to the victory over Nagorno Karabakh in 1990-93 war. Thank you again for this video and hope to see more coming :)

      Armenians are VERY proud to be Armenian. Hence outside of America they do not like intermarrying or intermixing & are IMMENSELY nationalistic. Armenia is one of the most homogenous nation on earth & its not because they think they are better than anyone else, its simply survival & a way to protect their unique culture & genetic identity. Western & eastern visitors are ALWAYS welcome as long as they respect the culture, & Armenian culture is a typical christian culture. Everywhere is clean, food is great, water is clean, & life is good. I encourage you to visit Armenia and their cousins in Georgia. You would love it.

    Hey, thanks for the video! The Battle of Avarayr was the pinnacle of the Armenian struggle against the Sasanid Emipre that wished to convert Armenians, forcing them to abandon Christianity. Vardan was made a saint by the church after his death and the Armenians contnued to fight a guerrilla campaign against the Persian army, after they lost the battle. Even though they were defeated in the Battle of Avarayr from the military point of view, they won a moral victory - earning the right to preserve their identity and gaining more autonomy.

AND DECIDES... ,THE NATION SHOULD CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY..RIGHT AWAY..THE BATTLE OF 'AVARAYR'.. WAS LOST,MANY,THOUSANDS DIED..BUT VARTAN MAMIGONIAN DID NOT..WE ARMENIANS ARE STRANGE..WE LOSE BATLES..AND CELEBRATE IT AS A VICTORY..SO WHY GO TO WAR AT ALL..IF YOU ARE A WINNER NO MATTER WHAT,EVEN A SAINT TO TOP IT ALL..MY FAMILY NAME IS VARTANIAN...AND TILL LATELY..I THOUGHT WE WERE CELEBRATING VICTORY ...WHAT KINDE OF POINT OF VUE IS THAT..IT HAS BECOME A VERY BAD HABIT..WE DO NOT CONSIDER GUERRILLA CAMPAIGN ,TO BE NOTHING BUT TERRORISM IN THE FREE WORLD..WE CONDEMN SUICIDE BOMBING AS A TERRORIST MISSION,ONLY WHEN THEY SHOUT 'ALLAH OU AKBAR'..BUT CHRISTIANS ,THEY BECOME .SAINTS IF THEY ARE KILLING MUSLIM,LATLY..THE ARMENIAN GATOGIGOS..WENT TO RUSSIA,WITH THE ARMENIAN MINISTER TO SEE PUTIN..HE WAS TOLD..THIS IS NOT A RELIGIOUS WAR..WHY BRING ALONG RELIGION IN IT..RELIGION HAS KILLED,MILLIONS,HUNDREDS OF MILLION PEOPLE..LET US NOT GO IN THAT DIRECTION..THE YOUTH GO TO CHURCH FOR CHRISTENING,WEDING,EASTER,CHRISTMAS,AND THE DAY THEY DIE..OTHERWISE,IT IS OLD WIDOWS,5 OR SIX OF THEM..LIGHTING CANDELLES ,OR ASKING FOR ASSISTANCE..BESIDES THE PRISTS..WHO ARE GOING ON WITH THEIR CHANT...

    By the way, I thought I can help clarify a few things:
    1- Marzban means "border guard" in Persian. Back then, it was a title given to local leaders in the borderlands of the Persian empire.
    2- Yes people. They were regions called Albania and Iberia in the Caucasus back then, with no direct relation with the modern country of Albania or the Iberian peninsula.

    Armenia has sacrificed for the preservation of the Christian faith many times. Battle of Avarayr was one of them. Without this sacrifice both the existence of Armenians as a people and Christianity would be threatened with extinction in that part of the world. For this reason Vardan Mamikonyan has been immortalized in the Armenian Church as a Saint.

    BazBattles I love you even more now. Before writing this I came back from a usual day at college and sat down to eat. Barely a minute in I just think about Avarayr for a second and how barely anyone knows about it nowadays and then I see it on your channel as soon as I enter TH-cam. It took me a second look and I was shocked after I realized what I saw. Information about Armenian battles and history are so rare to find on the internet in sufficient detail , everytime I want to know more I end up not finding good enough information. No one bothers to shed light on our rich history anymore (not that we are more special than anyone else) and now, to see Avarayr on your wonderful and ever-growing channel is beyond amazing for me as a proud Armenian and a lifelong student of all of history. This battle is at the heart of everything that defines my ancestors (stubbornness most of the time) through their history under foreign control. I want to thank you immensely for making this video and letting it be possible to show countless others around the world. Again, thank you very much I don't think you know how much this means to me

    • @AJ_MUR
      @AJ_MUR 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ArsenAl-zorK Even the topic of Sassanid tolerance is kind of a complicated issue to tackle, since it heavily depends on which specific king you are talking about. Keep in mind that most of the shahs of the Sassanid period were able to uphold tolerance towards nearly all of their subjects and, as evidenced in the late era, did also incorporate them into the Persian nobility and elite ranks of their military, so long as they were loyal to the empire. Admittedly though, when some of the rulers carried out the odd persecution (Avarayr being the most notable example), they clamped down hard. It probably wasn't a pretty sight.

    Yazdegard was ironic in that he wished to restore the glory of the ancient Persian empire, yet he failed to recognize one of the key things which made that empire so great: their tolerance and diversity. Cyrus, rather than oppressing the Jews, helped them rebuild their temple and allowed them to practice their faith. Yazdegard wanted to Persianize the Armenians, without realizing that the best way to do so would be a policy of religious tolerance.
