0:00 Hello there 1:02 What's the plan 1:56 Riding naked! 3:01 Fitting the Sport screen & thoughts 6:07 Fitting the Touring screen, thoughts and decision time 8:09 Race!
I am so blessed by this video. I have a 1250R too, and love the bike. I like naked bikes as I hate all the framework in front, takes away the bikeyness, and one with the environment, unlike a car where one is shielded from the environment. However some screen would be nice for long distance use at 70 mph. Perhaps I will live without any screen. Another point is I am literally getting 63 mpg (not by the TFT computer, which says ca 65), but by fills of the tank. The official mpg is 45, not a complaint, but then I do use the throttle as need be. The fuel consumption of this BM is extraordinary and compares to a bike of 125cc.
Hi Malcolm, that is a great point about the fuel economy - I've only gone by the onboard computer rather than how much fuiel I'm actually using... maybe I will do a proper test at some point. Still impressive fuel economy for a 1250cc though! I'm not sure if any screen for this bike will be 100% effective... I like the Sport screen that I'm using now but its not perfect sadly. I do like naked bikes too... I'm sure I will own another faired bike one day but right now this bike is giving me the thrills I need 😊
Thanks Rikky! Just saved time an money by watching this... I have a sport screen and I was planning to switch it to touring screen. Nice and informative as always.
I test rode all three combinations, naked, sports and touring. At 5'10" I found the touring works best for me. I use an LS2 Valiant helmet which is modular; I always ride with it fully open.
Got a r1200r, you have to have a deflector fitted on the touring screen and it deflects the wind over the helmet, i got a cheap Chinese deflector works perfect, can do 70/80 mph no problem even have the visor open at 70.hope it helps.
I prefer the bike without a screen for the clean and quite. I am 6' even, 32" inseam so longer torso. I tried the PUIG screen s it was taller than the little BMW unit but shorter than any of the touring options. I also think it looked the best though no screen looks good with that headlight. Rode it for a few hours and promptly sold it. Helmet buffeting and noisier. I've had each iteration of the GS and fought with that brain rattling far to long. Long live the naked !!
That's interesting that you had problems with the GS... I've ridden one for about an hour and found that it was very quiet behind the fairing... good enough to make me consider one for my next bike! Maybe the fairing is good enough to protect hobbit-sized people such as myself 🤣 I'm back to naked on my R1250R now and although the wind blast is present, there is no buffeting and I think it's probably the best way. I may refit a screen for my next track day though!
Interesting, thanks for the comparison. I have the sport screen on mine, but have been curious about the larger touring screen. I did try the Puig screen, which is similar in size to the touring screen, and had the same issue you did…too much turbulence, too much noise. I’m back to the sports screen…cuts down pressure, looks great, and protects the TFT unit.
I feel very lucky to be able to test two screens at the same time 😊 I was really hoping that the taller screen would be the best option so I can put a GoPro behind it but that turbulence was a shocker. I didn't really think about how either screen protects the TFT though - that's a useful side effect!
I’ve given up on big screens as the turbulence and associated noise is always awful. The Sport screen on my R1200R L/C is just fine. The only touring bike I have ridden that had a ‘quiet’ screen was the O/E on the Original Aprilia Caponord. 800 miles in a day in a still pocket of air. It’s very often the taller the screen the more buffeting and noise.
Hi, picking mine up 1st Sept. I fancy a screen, what's ur final thought's on screens? Have you heard of any good one's? And are you still riding without?
Mine came with the Sport screen. My feelings were the same as you described. Then I bought the Wunderlich R Marathon, and the difference was like comparing water to wine. Of course the bike loses somewhat the sporty look, but for medium or long trips, you arrive with your shoulders and neck totally rested. Not to mention the trips with rain. The whole body is protected. P.S. 02:51 That Range Rover deserves to be hanging on Mr Bean's Christmas Tree. Best regards
The Wunderlich screen is perhaps something to consider when I do plan a longer, multi day trip, you do make it sound desirable even if it doesn't look very sexy! That Range Rover was shocking wasn't it 😊
Interesting feedback - How tall are you if I may ask? I'm 1m70 and was wondering how the Wunderlich Marathon or the touring Puig aerodynamic works and if they could be protective enough to avoid these annoying helmet turbulence for those long highway trips...
@@Whataiveur I measure 1.75 and only need to tilt the body slightly, so that 2/3 of the helmet is behind the screen. That done, most of the aerodynamic noises are greatly reduced to the point that you can hear the engine perfectly. For those interested in the Puig screen, you can see on its website a wind tunnel simulation. puig.tv/uploads/products/600445/3625/aerodinamyc-test.pdf Finally, GIVI also manufactures one. I have held it in my hand, and it is narrower, and with an ellipsoidal shape. I do not know what such a result will give, but it can also be said that you need specific atachments so that the original BMW will not serve you. Buena ruta a todos!
@@Ferr1963 Amazing feedback! Thank you buddy! The reason why I'm asking is because I'm currently riding a Street Triple and my last long ride on a highway (500km+) almost got me deaf! I am a naked bike lover and can't see myself riding a trail (like the GS)) or a bike with big fairing (such as the 1250 RT for ex) - And as I'm looking for a more versatile and comfy bike, I naturally got into the 1250 R but I was wondering how effective could be the wind protection with a proper windshield - I'm actually 1m70 so I guess this could perfectly works for me! Thanks again!
Did the same as you on a 2015 R1200R sport. The taller the screen got the more brain torture due to a vibration coming from the screen. I think the factory brackets were designed for the smaller sport screen and not the taller much more demanding touring wind resistance.
Yes I'm surprised that the taller screen even made it to market! Some 3rd party screens come with their own hardware which include taller brackets but I don't want to play the "search for the perfect screen" merry-go-round!
Think of getting a used 2015 model up for sale. This helps me get a rough idea of what the ride is like with and without shield. Thank you for taking the trouble to share.
Thanks for a very helpful video. I wonder about the after market screens from other suppliers. I have a 2-part MRA screen on my 1250GS, which is excellent. At higher settings I am totally cocooned. At low settings I get steady cool air through my helmet. I’ve heard good reports about the Givi screen on the 1250R. I’d be very interested to hear others’ experiences.
I have the sport screen at present ordered the Puig Touring screen this morning due to arrive on Wed it looks like a waste of money as we are around the same height.
Thanks for your comment and you may well have a good point there - it would be nice to try other helmets but that's a rather expensive test! Besides, I've tried Arai, HJC, and AGV helmets and only Shoei seem to fit my apparently funny-shaped head properly! When it's time for a new helmet in a year or two I'll research some more brands 👍
It's very annoying isn't it! I don't use a screen on the bike at all now unless I'm on a trackday. I think the only ones that work are the really wide and tall ones but I can't fit one of those on my bike... I have a reputation to uphold 😂
@@RikkyTang Hahaha you're right, a naked bike (any brand) with a big windshield or an extender looks horrible. The side cases also kill the beautiful appearance of the bike. Thank you for your videos, you have a new subscriber.
I tryed also the Sportscreen and the "Marathon" from Wunderlich. This one ist much higher than the touringscreen. But it doesn't work for me. I have so much vibration and noise on my helmet (Shoei Neotec II). Now I use only the sportscreen.
Thank you for your feedback. It makes me wonder who these tall screens actually work for! Are these rider 2M tall?! 😂 My helmet is an original GT Air - I don't know if the helmet is part of the problem but other main brands of helmet don't fit my head properly.
Interesting feedback - How tall are you if I may ask? I'm 1m70 and was wondering if the Wunderlich or Puig could be protective enough for those long highway trips...
I ended up with this exact set up; Neotec II and Wunderlich Marathon screen, and I’m experiencing a great deal of buffeting/turbulence around my helmet as well. I’m 1,80m/5’11” tall. It definitely helps take the wind pressure off my neck and chest, but the noise generated around the helmet is unbearable.
Interesting, I am guessing that the device on the chin of your helmet would also have an effect relative to an unadorned helmet, and may affect your test results, depending upon where the wind is being directed.
Yes that is a fair point to consider! However my camera has since moved to the strap on my rucksack so it is more of a shoulder-cam now, but I've still experienced similar turbulence/noise issues with a couple of different screens. Thank you for your thoughts 😊
I got the mudslinger from Nippy Normans here in the UK - however they have very limited markets they can export to for some reason. I fitted an Evotech engine guard in the end. it covers less area then the AvantGuard item but it seems to do the job OK www.ebay.co.uk/itm/324000094358?hash=item4b6fe91896:g:9wgAAOSw1ztd5ZWh
@@sweet_dollars5347 Yes that does look like a choice for touring. However it does not do any favours for the looks of the bike so I would not fit one to mine!
I’d appreciate if you could provide details of the spoiler you added, please? I had my R1250R supplied with the tall (touring) screen. I’m 5ft 11in using a neotec 2 and couldn’t tolerate the turbulence and noise with this screen so off it came but maybe it could be made usable with the spoiler? Here’s hoping 😊
Wow that's surprising I would have been sure the higher touring screen would have been better ,I have a screen a similar size on my XJR and it's great but it does kind of sit on my headlight and your one is quite a bit higher than that I guess .. Interesante : )
I was hoping that the taller screen would solve several problems at once but unfortunately it wasn't to be! But like I said in the video, someone of a different shape/size may get different results.
Personally i dont like them with screens on, my 1250r came with the screen fitted. Didnt take too long before it came off. Looks so much better without it.
As far as the looks go the sports screen is probably the best of a bad bunch! I hate the whole headlight design anyway - no screen can really "look good" on this bike because of it but that's a story for another video lol What I will say is that I do like the idea of the screen protecting the TFT from damage over time - that's a good reason to have one.
Thanks for your comment and I'm happy to hear that the Puig screen works for you. For me, if I were to do anything with the bars it would be to replace them with something lower not higher, for a slightly sportier riding position.
I just mounted a touring screen to my triumph street scrambler. The worst ride ever. The wind noise in the helmet is enormus. No, naked bikes is best naked 👍

Great Test! Very educational…..I bought a demo bike that came with the low screen and I was tempted to change it, but will now refrain from it…..
To be honest I now ride with no screen fitted and find that for me, this is the way to ride with the least buffeting and wind noise on this bike.
