Wicked the musical was adapted from the novel (Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West) from the 90s. Wicked has been running on Broadway since the early 2000s. It's the most popular modern musical. It doesn't really mess with the Wizard of Oz canon. Elphaba still does all of the evil wicked things she did during the Wizard of Oz. The show really dives into how most of the characters are morally grey. Yes, Elphaba was born green because her mom cheated on her father with someone and she drank a green elixer. It's such a beautiful show.
