Look what happens. This "reputable pool builder" had never taken a course
to learn the principles of infinity pools. If you want to build this type of pool, you need to know the infinity identity footprint. These pools have certain requirements to function properly.
This is an infinity pool with a lot of problems. I was asked for a proposal to repair the failing stone on the face of the infinity wall. I did not quote the work, because of the problems.

The negative edge pool dates back to 1957, implemented by Architect, John Lautner at the Silvertop house in Los Angeles. A few years before Akins as you referenced.

a breath of fresh air thank you Jannine ,so many cowboys out there, building pools for 30yrs, I learnt by experience a long time ago how not to build a vanishing edge and corrected many since, the main problem i find is tank size in most cases is too small eg;(16x8 m pool commercially built with 8m an half round vanishing edge with a floating auto cover, the weir basin 8x.5x .5m deep with a massive 200mm open suction pipe on the bottom , the engineers argued it would work electronically on demand I said maybe but the makeup water into the pool max flow is 26lm so after backwashing (700lts/m 5hp pump) it will take days (5.6) to refill before the cover could be re activated , they found out the hard way and ruined a million dollar pool, today the pool is operated as a standard ), followed by incorrect water proofing , mesh back tiles , pumps in the wrong place, siphoning, Non return valves, insufficient makeup water on demand, failure to pin large tiles on sun exposed walls, windage and water flow, positive over negative edges vs pool safety. education is what is lacking across the board, yes even the so-called inspectors from the regulators, then there is the know all's and the cowboys. believe it or not a lot are qualified engineers. my biggest challenge and success was a 3-tier 14x4m pool 3sided vanishing edge on a pvt yacht of 126m.they said it couldn't be done. www. acqua.co.nz

You're correct about the engineers and cowboys. Engineers do not have a clue, sometimes, if they have never had the experience with infinity pools. I save many from disasters every year. Your experience is beyond belief, such a devastating outcome. You're from New Zealand, where the skills are far lower than here, although the skills here are low.

How do you handle expansion and contraction of a negative edge wall from zero degrees to 100 degrees?

How would it be zero degrees? I have heard of thermal changes, but that one is a Doozy. Essentially, you use materials that are forgiving and waterproof each side of the wall and some into basin and pool. If you use glass that has not the thermal rating, then expect problems. Your question is very broad for an answer.
