    The mosquitoes (aka. Satan's air force) survive the winter as larvae (when their resistance to cold is best) or eggs.

    • @kognak6640
      @kognak6640 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      Mostly it's eggs and they can last years waiting the puddle appear again. Larvae needs air to breath so even a little bit ice will kill them, they simply drown under ice. Some species winter as adults and wake in very first warm days, sometimes there's still snow leftovers. These ones are pretty shy compared to midsummer hungry swarmers.
      And it's short summers why mosquitos get so aggressive in the North. Every warm day counts as weather can turn cold. And it's never just mosquitos, we have black flies, tiny midges which can go through mosquito nets. Hot days bring horse flies size of wasps, these ones can make bleeding bites. Mid June to mid July is worst, the rest of the summer isn't bad. August is pretty nice.

    Energy is not the same as electricity. 80% of electricity in Finland is produced with renewables + nuclear. Most of the "energy" is used in industrial settings, thus they use wood fuels etc.

    The income tax rate is progressive: in 2024 if you earn 20 500-30 500 euros the tax rate is 19%; for 30 500-50 400 euros it is 30%; for 50 400-88 200 euros it is 34% and for 88 200-150 000 it is 42%. Yes, most of us are happy to pay taxes because we get so much in return. And yes, trust in the state, government and fellow citizens is very important. A Finnish product might not be the fanciest or "sexiest" but you can always trust that it is of high quality and works really well.

    Paper industry produces a lot of waste products which are burned for energy, majority of "wood" as energy source comes from here. These plants output more electricity than they can use so excess is sold to market. Second largest is biomass thermal plants for district heating networks, bigger ones are usually combined heat and electricity power plants. They mostly use treetops and trees from thinning, the wood gets chipped and dried.

    Very good video. Trust is key. That's the reason why Italians aren't happy even if we live in an amazing country. We cannot trust the system which encourages us to be individualistic and not community oriented. Also not feeling very connected to co-citizens from different geographical areas doesn't help social cohesion. I wish we could trust one another more just like people in Scandinavia whom we consider naive (lol but also 😢).

    The statistics on mental health are often deceiving in this type of countries because it doesn't count the hidden mental health issues which is much more prevalent in countries with a weak social welfare system.
    In other words, the finns, norse and swiss get a lot of financial assistance, medical assistance and assessments on mental health (including the poor) which results in higher statistics.
    Still, the social isolation is a big issue in these countries so that's definitely detrimental for mental health

    • @j3mixa
      @j3mixa 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, it could very well be that some problems are hidden in different cultures. We have pretty low threshold with going to see a doctor in mental health issues here in Finland. That definately effects the statistics. We could also have lower tolerance on domestic violence, so it could be reported more often than somewhere else. Those things do have an effect on statistics, so you can't always compare the numbers between different countries accurately without taking the culture and resources into consideration.
      Of course we also could have some cultural things that hide some problems. It's not like it's perfect anywhere in the world.

We had EU style free movement of people and administrative cooperation decades before joining the EU. Since 2000 we had increased military co-operation, even though FIN+SWE said "I do" to NATO only after Russia tried to conquer all of Ukraine - another non-allied neutral European country just like SWEDEN 🇸🇪/and FINLAND 🇫🇮.

    Here are couple of Finnish soldiers you might find interesting. According to the author-historian William R. Trotter, the first one is arguably the greatest Baltic statesman since Gustavus Adolphus: "FINLAND: Funeral of Field Marshal Mannerheim (1951)", "MANNERHEIM | History and his Line", "Marsalkka Mannerheimin kunniamerkit | Marskalk Mannerheims ordnar" and "Mannerheim seisoo keskellä metsää // Mannerheim stands in the woods".
    Among these are some Mannerheim Cross Knights. One of them was born in the former Finnish town Viipuri in 1919 as Lauri Törni. As Larry Thorne, his remains were buried at Arlington National Cemetery in 2003: "Spirit of the winter war | Talvisodan henki | Karpolla on asiaa", "Aarne "Marokon kauhu" Juutilainen 19.12.1939 Kollaanjoella (English subtitles)", "The White Death (Simo Häyhä) - Winter War Documentary - English Subtitles", "The 10th Mountain Division History", "Coffee and Conversation, 530: Liisa Hale - "WWII Finland to US 10th Mountain Division"", "Maailmanmestari, marskin ritari, lieutenant-colonel Olavi Alakulppi", "Finnish Long Range Patrols Behind Soviet Lines (’41 - ’44)". "Törni - Sotilaan tarina (A Soldier's Story) English Subtitles", "Phantom Fighters (Green Berets) in Color with Larry Thorne (Lauri Törni)". "Marttisen miehet: asekätkijäveljet" and "Happy 248th Birthday U.S. Army from Finland".

    Mosquitoes are born in puddles. When you get melting snow, you get lots of puddles. Add to that the fact in the North the summer is short, so all the bugs have a really short time window to reproduce and feed, so they all hatch at once. Not just mosquitoes but horseflies, gnats etc, and the air is swarming with them. In Lapland this phenomenon is known as "räkkä", which is when all the reindeer gather up in tight groups like some ancient spearman formation and head up to the hills to avoid the blood sucking insects.

    As a finn, I would say that trust is a right answer. 🎯 BUT I also say, that finns are happy less than for exemple americans. You have your "american dream" what you are hunting. It must be stressful.
    And it is good, for those who gets that. But those who dont get are probably sad about it. In Finland we dont have that. We dont kind of have even possibility for that.
    Instead we have had a lot of hard times in finnish history, like "winter war" and "the greath wrath" and so on. So we are just happy that those times are over and we have a peace and things are ok for now. It is more important than hunting "american dream". Safety. So I think this is the answer. But yeah, we also have no homeless, we take care our own peoples, we have a subscription and a free healthcare and school system that is also equal for everybody. So those influence also. And I would also say that love towards our homecountry. 🇫🇮 It keeps us together.

Some people in Scandinavia are very affected by this. And thats the most common explanaition of why the Nordic countries are the happiest in the world but still are not in the bottom of the lists when it comes to depression for an ex.
    .
    In Finlands case they used to drink a lot more than swedes 50-70 years ago and I still think theres more problems with alcoholism amoungst older people there. This could be explained by the fact that Finland was a poor war torn country for large parts of the 1900’s and this still affects Finland to some extent.

    Many Finns are not exactly happy with the current government. But we still have a certain amount of trust that one government won't collapse the whole system. Although the right wing parties and left wing parties disagree on some things, there're still some basic things that all parties support to a degree. If not just to stay on the good side of voters. No party would dare to suggest privatising the school system, or the whole healthcare system for example. Even though the right wing government right now is cutting from the social benefits, giving tax benefits to the higher income people, and supporting some privatisation, they are still maintaining their support to the core values of the well fair society and education. Their methods of running the country may not be well liked by everyone but Finns mostly trust that they'll keep the country running, and that the next government will probably fix the worst of the damage this government might do. And the next will try fix their mistakes. I think as a nation we do have pretty high trust that our government is working for us and not against us. Even if some decisions they make would be less popular at that particular moment.

    There is no "free defense" from NATO. It costs a lot. Finland has to buy a lot of US arms manufacturers' weapons such at the F-35 for over $100 million a piece. That doesn't include enormous maintenance outlays for 20 to 30 years for a far too complex system.
    One of the main reasons the US pushes NATO expansion is to aid its arms industry to export its war products, because it doesn't have much else to export.
    The US antagonism against Russia goes back to WWI. Very few Americans know that the US invaded Russia after WWI, Arkhangelsk in the north and Vladivostok in the west.

Ukraina is more importat to rest of world (grain productions) than Finland so I don't see why other countries would help us , they do not help even Ukraina properly.

      That's the reason why countries sign uo to NATO. So they have back up if ever needed by every NATO nation. A NATO rule is that each nation must spend around 2.5% a year of their GDP on defence/military spending. Also NATO don't demand that yiu only buy wraponerry from the US. The UK and France produce MANY different weapons, and munitions etc. As do Germany too.

    Happy: I find it difficult to be happy about the current Danish government. They make too many stupid decisions and as it's a majority government it can't be forced out.

    Finnish here, I am not happy with our current right-wing government nor the president that was elected. I am waiting for the government to step down for the decisions they have made. Unfortunately I have to wait for 5 to 6 years for the next presidential elections.

    You are partly right about the politicians but there is hardly any country at the moment satisfied with their government. But these are crazy times. As you know very well the US is still the craziest like ever😮😢. In every single video they got the taxes wrong. It is the marginal tax here again and you get tax returns like in every country. I really hope the good people in the US are able to do the right thing and not elect the prince of darkness to lead the world to its end.
