I'm from southern Indiana, we have a persimmon festival. We only pick persimmons off the ground they will always be ripe. If your breaking off the branchs you are harming your next years production. American persimmons are native trees not a Quaker import. I have a persimmon orchard of 45 trees and I raise up seedlings every year.
+In a Pickle they are getting harder to find in these parts, so I dumped the majority of seeds off in the neighboring fields and fence rows...lol... I want persimmon trees all around me! :P It draws the deer too, for easier hunting days in the cold! :P
+Connie D They grow in California and the one you bought is not astringent so you should be fine. Is it a large variety? Ready to eat firm or soft? If so, finding a seed in one is not easy. But treat the seeds just as I did and plant indoors for one year then plant outdoors to avoid any frosts till it's seen one year or so.. They produce fruit quickly!
Hey Janie what do they taste like? Seeds kinda looked like an apricot , well a little. I'll google it and see what else can be made with that fruit. Thank you for sharing as always!
+miz sterious it has a flavor all it's own but I will try to explain the flavor; mildly sweet and this kind tastes a bit like dates. Some say they taste like a sweet, non-acidic pear tomato, but I don't think the wild ones do; maybe the Japanese larger variety. These are what desserts are made of; pure yumminess! Persimmons are a healthy source of fiber and are high in copper too! Oh boy! :P You want me to send you some seeds? I am sending some to San Antonio in the afternoon! I can send some to you too??!! Still, not sure how they will thrive in Texas heat, but they do love full sun.
Hey Miss Janie? Is there any way I could convince you to do a seed swap for a bunch of persimmon seeds if you have any still? I'd dearly love some to plant on the family farm. I'm trying to plant as many different trees as possible before we move in 2 years. 🌾 Green Blessings 🌿
Oh my gosh! I'd have met you and John to "help" collect persimmons. Making the pulp is a labor of love. I'll send you a self addressed envelope if you'll shoot me your address.
I remember when I was little (several moons ago😜) my grandparents had a persimmon tree growing in their side yard. (This would be in southern Ohio). It seemed HUGE to me, but that could have been all in my perspective since I was probably 10 or younger. All I really remember was they were small and bright orange and were so sour that your whole head would almost turn inside-out! Lol! I'm guessing it was because they were not ripe yet. I also don't remember my grandparents using them for anything. Now, I wonder why, because they didn't have a lot of money and they raised and processed the majority of their veggies and meats. Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmm......

Will Japanese persimmons grow here in the south? I bought one in the Korean market with the idea of planting it.

Did you get your property with persimmon trees? Would love to get seedlings.
No, I was highest bidder but a family who was needing a home came in under me and I let them have it.
