Other than the FWD it's a great car. I'm sure that some will say that the new Maxima is terrible, but that's to be expected. It doesn't matter if it's a Pagani Huayra or a Toyota Corolla, there's always those people that say something negative.
Jordan Little I agree with you, and that's why sometimes i hate reading the comments because of the haters saying negative things only and ignore the positive things
I just hit 130,000 miles on my 2016 Maxima. I was worried about my CVT transmission (because I've always heard that I'll basically need a new transmission) but nonetheless no issues and I'm really happy with my maxima. Looking to hit 250k miles with this one before I get a new one!!!
So I bought one last week. And to use your favorite word, I like it "overall." There are 3 main things that I don't like: The width between the drivers door and middle console makes it not as roomy for my knees. No 360 camera in the SR and the ride is bumpier than I'm used to.
I have a 4th gen 97 maxima and I absolutely love it. I prefer the transmissions and motors in the 4th gen over the newer maximas even though I might eventually pop a 3.5 in it and have a lighter faster car than the 5th and after ;)
Then make a video of you on a windy back road and rip around in it! I have the 2011, and while I love it and its so much fun to drive, the 16 is what I really want.
Pretty cool, I think it's an improvement over the last gen, which felt like a boat when I drove it, though the power delivery was fun. My dad had a maxima back in the 90's and it seemed so much more agile back then. I just wish Nissan made a WRX competitor...under $30k, manual, AWD, etc...it'd be nice if there was more competition in that segment
I love this car..32mph per galon in highway..and its fast the cvt xtronic is awesome smooth and fast to get to 300 horse power..and its light car too.i beat the challenger v6 2016 in straightline 3times.
how does this feel in corner? Do you feel the heaviness up front? And how much does this understeer? Lastly, hows the soft or hard does this ride? Thanks
Good job. Interesting they chose the CLA to compare on that chart, did not notice a specification of 4matic or not. Probably shouldve been a non 4matic c300 tbh.
I like your hand position and wheel control. Uncommon. Watch any pro driver, hands at 3 and 9, no "shuffle steering." One hand at 12 o clock is a bit annoying to watch for me....
I owned a 99 Infiniti I30 T and it was a nice Nissan, well built, quite, and a nice VQ engine, only thing that really hurt the VQ engine was the 4spd auto that it had, some models had a 5sp manual, but those are hard to find. Not sure about the looks of the new Max, I will have to see the car in person.
This might be my next car if it wasn't for the q50/q60. IDK, maybe I won't be able to afford it at that time, At least I know the Maxima is doing something right, and it's a good fallback option for me.
300HP and a CVT, Cvt tranmissions have really come a long way since a few years ago. That used to be too much power for CVT's to handle reliably. Wish CVT still had more gears to choose from, but its kinda cool we are getting better CVT. A lot of people just didn't believe in them.
William Su other reasons like what?. trust me i used alot of cars and i got this one and i have to admit that Nissan did a great work by improving this generation of the Maxima
Do you like the CVT better in Maxima or WRX? Between GTI, Maxima, WRX - best steering feel, and most quiet? I'm looking at these 3 cars at the moment. Thanks!
carrothk Haven't driven the CVT WRX. If I bought the WRX I'd certainly go with the manual - lighter, better fuel economy, cheaper, faster. Unsure on steering feel. Maxima was the most quiet.
did you notice that there is a button at the very back of the acceleration pedal that will hold the rpm at just under redline but the CVT will adjust without dropping the rpm? I have that in my 2014 Nissan Sentra
ChinnuWoW Weight transfer to the rear tires under acceleration reduces grip, and consequently, maximum potential acceleration in FWD cars. It's not really a problem in low power enthusiast cars like the civic si and the golf gti, which don't have any problem putting down all their power, but when you get into the 300+ hp range it can start to hinder performance. With more horsepower, the weight over the front tires decreases while the need for grip increases, this quickly wrecks potential acceleration in high hp FWD cars. This is why the golf r and gla45 AMG have front-biased awd drivetrains, there just isn't enough grip in the front tires alone.
Yeah I guess that's the best way. Yeah I've driven a lot of low HP FWD cars that don't tq steer at all (because they didn't HAVE much!) but they'd understeer a lot. I've also driven FWD that don't understeer TOO bad but have more power so tq steer so bad you can't keep a straight line while getting on it! Like the Focus ST oversteers but gets a bit of tq steer.
Phos9 I think so too, but it's what consumers want. That said, it is nice for manual selection mode when going down hills to be able to control the speed with gearing.
I've only ever driven CVTs in off highway light utility vehicles, and they seem fine in that application, but it might fit that application a lot better.
***** Motor Trend just tested the Maxima. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds. Despite having a worse official power-to-weight ratio, the Audi S4 gets to 60 in 4.4 seconds due to AWD, faster transmission and a very conservative bhp rating (really more like 375, not 333). Of course, the S4 cost more so they're not really market competitors.
***** Politics make smart moves all the time, its just that the mistakes get more publicity. You cant seriously think that politicians are constantly failing at their jobs and countries are still standing.
there is no way this car gets 30mpgs. the WRX sedan gets 24mpg highway with a 2.0 FADIT and CVT and it weighs less, and has less power and almost half the displacement. either subaru is being conservative or nissan/honda/toyota pay the EPA to get bullshit fuel economy ratings to sell more of their boring blancmanges.
its so ugly.... what the hell were they thinking. the outgoing gen maxima was premium/sport oriented styling and this thing has gone full blown swoopy tampon. in 4 years it's going to look dated.
Other than the FWD it's a great car. I'm sure that some will say that the new Maxima is terrible, but that's to be expected. It doesn't matter if it's a Pagani Huayra or a Toyota Corolla, there's always those people that say something negative.

this is the best review for the maxima, and i just decided to buy the maxima after watching this review :)
Did you end up getting one? And hows it going?
I own a 2017 Maxima and i gotta say, i love it. It keeps up with some more risky drivers on the highway surprisingly.
The fact that this thing can keep up with and probably beat my 350z is kind of intimidating for a sedan/family car
+Alex Silva More power and less weight (in the base model) than a Mitsubishi Evo. That's crazy to think about.
Just bought mine this week. I love this thing so much.
Thanks for showing nissan love
The Maxima has always been an underrated sleeper for sure.
I love that you mention visibility in your videos. Not many reviewers mention that.
Outstanding video on the Nissan Maxima SR!
I have the 2016 maxima midnight edition, love that car!😎
Nissan: "Innovation that shows how few fucks we give."
That's a good one!
Unbearable Pain What do you mean?
Unbearable Pain Agreed. The only thing they took from GTR are sodium filled valves? That's not even new tech.
+Unbearable Pain well I mean if you want to pay $75k for a maxima then by all means, ask them to put more innovation into it
I just hit 130,000 miles on my 2016 Maxima. I was worried about my CVT transmission (because I've always heard that I'll basically need a new transmission) but nonetheless no issues and I'm really happy with my maxima. Looking to hit 250k miles with this one before I get a new one!!!
Thank you for reviewing the maxima, and can't wait for the full review.
Love you and I hope to you all the best
I never liked Maximas until now. I really like the new design.
lol at the interruption at the end. :P
***** LMAO
Informative, fun, and funny review. Good Job!!

Stats comparison with a random car...I love it!
I have a 4th gen 97 maxima and I absolutely love it. I prefer the transmissions and motors in the 4th gen over the newer maximas even though I might eventually pop a 3.5 in it and have a lighter faster car than the 5th and after ;)
The old transmission way better, but new body style gorgeous!😍
I want one so badly
First! Love your reviews, man!
Maybe they will let you review a GT-R one day :)
TheLukey21 It's coming. :)
Engineering Explained I will love for you to do a review on the new 911 GT3
Engineering Explained Can't wait. One of my favourite cars
Then make a video of you on a windy back road and rip around in it! I have the 2011, and while I love it and its so much fun to drive, the 16 is what I really want.
Well, it passed your "smile" test, which says a lot! :)
the new Maxima looks pretty nice compared to the previous one
Interceptor810 agreed the center stack on the prev gen looked horrible
Love your videos man
Jason. Brother. I know you're working hard bringing us all of these informative videos, but you need to eat.
Paddle shifters on CVTs just make me head desk tho.
thank you for the info @ Engineering Explained! that was very helpful. now I know wish car to buy.
Great Review ....... Great Car.
great reviews.

SoSickWidit they did ... they had the pulsar a 2.0 turbo awd, pretty nippy car . It would be nice if they brought it back
ooo interesting, hadn't heard of it but that sounds promising if they could bring it back

If they only had an AWD version I would trade in my 2008 Maxima :-)
I like your hand position and wheel control. Uncommon. Watch any pro driver, hands at 3 and 9, no "shuffle steering." One hand at 12 o clock is a bit annoying to watch for me....
Wow, 220kws? im Impressed, as much power as a turbo I4
FWD is life
I love you Nii-san!! :3

I have an auto 97 maxima se planning on doing a tranny swap eventually with minor upgraded I'm probably around 250 my car gets up and going

What do you like better, the shifters that move with the wheel or the ones in the column. I prefer the ones in the wheel
Next video: see how much better you can make the power to weight ratio by taking things out.
Hi. Is a 2016 Avalon review in your plans?
300HP and a CVT, Cvt tranmissions have really come a long way since a few years ago. That used to be too much power for CVT's to handle reliably. Wish CVT still had more gears to choose from, but its kinda cool we are getting better CVT. A lot of people just didn't believe in them.
William Su
they have to try the "Xtronic" CVT on nissan cars and i'm sure they will change their opinions about the CVT
aMr. Fel supposedly it hasnt been too reliable. i think they are putting way too much power into them
William Su
although they developed the engine to increase the durability of the gear so the high power doesn't affect it
aMr. Fel i guess it might be some other reason its not being too reliable
William Su
other reasons like what?. trust me i used alot of cars and i got this one and i have to admit that Nissan did a great work by improving this generation of the Maxima
It is the exhaust valves that are sodium filled, NOT the intake ones. Besides there is never ever a need for sodium filled intakes valves anyway.
Do you like the CVT better in Maxima or WRX? Between GTI, Maxima, WRX - best steering feel, and most quiet? I'm looking at these 3 cars at the moment. Thanks!

the old Maximas are superior
4th Gen ;)
Brandon Green I totally agree I have a 98 honestly to me that was the last true Maxima some might consider the 03
I have a 4th gen too. Best things ever
jarock121197 I would say 03, great feel, good interior, 3.5 power.
+N I N T E N D O B O Y White pearl 4th gen owner here
did you notice that there is a button at the very back of the acceleration pedal that will hold the rpm at just under redline but the CVT will adjust without dropping the rpm? I have that in my 2014 Nissan Sentra
So are they still using the 3.5l they have been using for years or the displacement changed the higher in options like the SR and platinum?
spoon games Still a 3.5L, 60% new parts.
At the end of the day it's still a front wheel drive, I wish they offered a turbo 4 and awd option
youngblood23rb I can fully understand the awd, but why a turbo 4? I'd much prefer 300hp naturally aspirated than turbocharged.
youngblood23rb awd haha rwd all day buddy
ChinnuWoW Weight transfer to the rear tires under acceleration reduces grip, and consequently, maximum potential acceleration in FWD cars. ***** Then it would be an Infinity
***** Just as a less expensive more fuel efficient option, not to mention tuner friendly
Why would you want to take away heat from the combustion chambers?
Are u a fan of the v6 power to weight
What gopros are you using?
Pair of 3+ Blacks. Love them.
:D Nice ending :D
Does it come with a turbo option?
Are you in Woodinville, WA for this shoot?
Maybe? Was at the Willow's Lodge if that helps. I'm always lost haha.
Yep! That's Woodinville for you. Hope you enjoyed your time in Washington.
Dear EE,
Can you please do a video explaining why the Ford Focus RS is going to utterly destroy the Subaru WRX STI next year?
Sincerely,
A fan.
smartxalex More power, less weight. That was easy. :)
+smartxalex ford's AWD system is crap, subaru will always have them beat there
Does anyone know if a 2017 version of the maxima will be released? I dont if if to get this one or wait for a 2017?
+David Martinez They will be the same car, but different model year. It's brand new for 2016.
If only Nissan would change the platform to RWD. Probably won't because of the Infinity G line :(
It's the same name as my queen...
As Renault owns 60% of nissan. Is nissan still maintaining it's DNA? (i mean in your country)
has nice purrr to it ill take it over outdated Lancers and dead EVO
When it said road circle... Did it mean Round about?
Mönoxide This is 'Murica, we call 'em traffic circles.
How much does it way in kg
So my only question that wasn't answered, does it have the MASSIVE amount of understeer that Maximas and Altimas have had as long as I can remember!?
Robby94LS He answered that at 6:18
Shit, must have done something else for a second and missed it, thanks vivahernando1!
I checked that time and he mentioned TORQUE steer but not understeer. they're 2 different things......
I think he is addressing the classic front wheel drive issue . I guess take a test drive is the ultimate answer.
Got nervous while turning with that big truck huh? Lol
OMG! I know exactly where you are lol
canada?
Are you from the future? It's 2015.
2016
I'm sorry but I didn't subscribe to watch you advertising manufactures cars :(
Love the engineering hate the advertising :(
***** It's not an advertisement, it's a review. No exchange of cash, just emotion. If you prefer engineering videos, just watch on Wednesdays. :)
better power to weight ratio than s4 eh? what's its 0-60 or quarter mile?? ;) the rest is all crap
+Sean L Saw another review put the 0-60 at 6.1 (Motortrend) and another at 5.7, YMMV.
Putting fake ratios on a CVT seems kinda silly to me.
Phos9 I think so too, but it's what consumers want. That said, it is nice for manual selection mode when going down hills to be able to control the speed with gearing.
Phos9 cvt's are horrible and drive like crap.

Esse rapaz fala muuuuuuiiito e mostra muito pouco o carro...
Only if it was awd......
FWD? ugh
ChinnuWoW was the last model not rwd? I could be wrong, but rwd is so much more fun. I'm not saying front wheel drive is bad, just a dissapointment.
MyNameIsBucko Every production maxima since the 80's has been FWD.
***** Studded tires front and rear, thats what is recommended in Europe unless all you do is drive in the city
***** That isnt a smart move, even with studs youre quite helpless on ice.

sikkkkk
A head on collision with a semi truck still couldn't knock the ugly off of this thing. Or any new Nissan for that matter.
there is no way this car gets 30mpgs.

i think he said everything we need to know about the car

I dislike the way I feel you are selling me this car instead of giving a real review.
what a waste 300hp coupled with an automatic transmission
You can tell he's hung like a horse.
its so ugly.... what the hell were they thinking. the outgoing gen maxima was premium/sport oriented styling and this thing has gone full blown swoopy tampon. in 4 years it's going to look dated.
TheK24Kyle nah the 2020’s still look nearly the same
It's a shame the car is so over styled. I don't even know what to say or feel when I look at it. I just know I would never buy one.
