Thank you from coach Lorne in London, ON. I work with a few beginners and older players, and these exercises are quite helpful. I like the theory aspect of the exercises to create consistency.
The moment a player hits the ball is everything. More so taking into account the plastic ball, which lowered the amount of rpm it can rotate and the speed it can reach, compared to the previous celluloid one. This is how Harimoto beat the best Chinese players at the beginning of his international career as a teenager. In this case Harimoto hit the ball before it reached its maximum height, something for which no Chinese was prepared.
Some actual demonstration of how to play a topspin against heavy backspin without to much swing change would have been very helpful as it's difficult to imagine how that's possible
I really love the way you simplify things and make us think! I can picture myself doing the same type of backhand against long pimps you described in the lesson! I have a question concerning the Chinese hitting backspin balls thanks to perfect timing. Do you think that as a beginner you should start to deal with these kinds of balls by just trying to lift the ball (late timing an open bat) and then once you master it, use a topspin shot (with arc, loop) and finally work on that perfect timing shot? Or do you directly work that technique? I think all three techniques, especially the last two are useful but the question is more if you need to master them one by one. Thank you very much for this masterclass!
My thanks and gratefulness to Domonkos Madam and Ottawa Table Tennis Club for this gem of a video.
