You can get a stainable and paintable wood filler and fill in all your holes on your table and sand it down after it dries. I think this will help you.

I would fill those areas that keep catching with a wood filler that can be stained, painted or varnished. That would at least alleviate that problem and still give you options.

Wow! Everything turned out just perfect! I love the little spots of white paint on the table. It tells a story. For me, I love the imperfections! My whole house is filled with second hand furniture, pictures etc. and I wouldn't have it any other way. To me that makes it feel more like a home! Give yourself grace and do what makes you happy! You are amazing! 😊❤

I only started watching your videos a few months ago and I just want you to know how much your real, down to earth self has been such an encouragement to me. Thank you for allowing God to use you in touching the lives of so many of us.

Kristen, I don’t think the white showing through here and there looks bad at all! The table is loaded with character and in my opinion adds to the charm! I personally would continue with the stain and see how it turns out! Be brave!

Kristen, I have refinished a lot of furniture, and there is no easy way, trust me, I would have found it!! Wood preparation is key. Most antique furniture that is painted white is painted with oil based enamel paint. There wasn't laytex paint back then, and it was very good at waterproofing things that were going to get spills on them so the wood didn't rot. You can not cover oil based paint with stain, it just won't work. oil based paint is solid, stain is transparent. Surface prep is key. As old varnishes like the finishes on your old chairs, they darken and get kind of gummy. The places where your old chairs are super dark is the varnish kind of mixing with years of dirt and grime and getting kind of gummy. YOu can scrape through it with your fiingernail. In order to get a good finish that will last you have to remove that. If you talk to any professional painter or furniture refinisher they don't recommed the quick fix kind of paints that are paint and primer in one or are super thick one coat. The idea is to put several layers on, each one hardens and dries, and they form a tough bond. Also water based paint and oil based paint don't mix you can't use them together. Your chairs did turn out a lovely color, they may chip really easity because of the thick coats of stain, only time will tell. Hope this helps, we have learned the hard way! We took an old clawfoot bathtub, and my husband sanded the outside of it down really good, and we painted the outside of it a lovely color (water based paint) We came out the next morning and it was covered with millions of tiny rust spots. The problem was the cast iron bare metal rusts, and the paint was WATER based, so the water in the paint made the whole tub rust. Had to restrip, resand, and repaint the whole thing with OIL based paint. Was beautiful after that.

*I admire your tenacity to not give up, Kristen! Keep in mind, you have learned things that don't work for you. Those lessons are invaluable and you can build on them. Please get some paintable/stainable wood filler to overfill the gouges (because it shrinks as it dries), and sand it smooth. Then poly over those areas. When dry, add another layer of poly to the whole tabletop so your poly doesn't look patchy. No more snags❣️🥰 🤎*
*Your new table decor is lovely. To keep your curvy candles🕯straight in your candleholders and prevent them from accidentally falling out, put a dab of hot glue inside each of your candleholders, then place your candles inside🕯and hold them straight for about 15 to 30 seconds to allow the glue to cool. 😎 Works with all candles, too! Use a candle snuffer to put them out so that hot wax isn't sprayed all over your table runner and stain it, which will happen if you blow 😙💨💦 them out. (Ask me how I know. 😥) God Bless you, your husband and daughters, along with your entire family this Thanksgiving🦃 and Christmas Season. 🎄*

Your home is so lovely and so welcoming, Kristen. I am 64 and my husband and I have always hosted all of the holidays, most of our married life, with our families. (almost 40 years) Our two daughters and their husbands ( and our 3 very young grandsons) love having the holidays at our home. ( The home my girls came home to when they were born and were raised in) We invite our extended family each year and also invite our son-in-laws families, if they want to join us. It's always a packed house. When it's time to pass the torch, we will do it gracefully. I just believe no-one is ready for it just yet.

I absolutely love how your table & chairs turned out!! Always do a small "test" spot on your furniture piece on the side or somewhere that isn't visible in case you don't like it and always remember do not shake your stain, always stir it. I've redone many furniture pieces & I know it's hard work but the satisfaction of the finished look is always well
    worth it!! God bless!

Yes, it was a lot of work but it all turned out so, so nice. Please be careful if you light the candles since they are close to the oats. Hospitality is such an important act. You and Josh really do understand what it's all about: helping the guests to feel at home and welcomed. It doesn't always have to be a lot of work or fancy. The guests are usually just so glad to be in your home and have the fellowship.

God bless you for tackling those chairs!!!! There is no way I would have the patience. I would have just spray painted them black , and stained the table. As far as the white paint showing through... they have those furniture crayons. I feel your home lends itself to the perfectly imperfect. Which I find charming. Curated over time versus a new show room perfectly stained table. Embrace it! I actually love the finished tablescape with the runner , which allows the white painted areas to show through. It adds character, dimension, and texture to everything!

I'm so glad that in the end you are happy with the results of your endeavor. That's important! Everyone has their own ideas on how to refinish wood, so what matters most is whether or not you're happy with the end result. Also, one way to look at is that you gave it your best shot & you learned a thing or two in the process. In my opinion, perfection can steal our joy. Wood is a natural, living breathing material; therefore, don't fret over the end result being perfect. Enjoy the look you've created, find joy in a job well done & perhaps over time, you'll fall more & more in love with the updates you've created with your table & chairs. I love the finished product to include your runner, chargers & dishes. I love the contrast between the chairs & table. Very lovely! Great job!

Kristen, everything looks great! I like the paint on the table here and there it gives it character. I agree with your husband it has history with the house and that paint is part of that tables story. I love furniture that isn't perfect because I feel like my guest feel more at ease with seeing antiques in my home because not everything is scratch and dent free. That table to me looks like it has been enjoyed, loved and a family has probably made some wonderful memories around it. You did a beautiful job with decorating.

Everything looks beautiful, Kristen! You are too hard on yourself. Refinishing furniture isn’t quick and easy. If it were, more people would be doing it. It definitely is a learning process. Your chairs turned out perfectly, in my opinion! I’m so glad you didn’t give up. And I absolutely love the table! I think it looks beautiful. The white paint showing through here and there just adds to the charm and is part of its story. It looks even older than it is. I agree with the others who recommended a stainable wood filler and then just applying another coat of the urethane on top (just do the top of the table). The tablescape is lovely. And you should be quite proud of yourself! I agree - no Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. Blessings always to you and your sweet family!❤

Beautiful job on the table and chairs. The best way to take care of those holes in the table surface is to use epoxy. Buy a small two part epoxy kit and mix up what you think you will need to fill the holes. Epoxy comes in two parts and you mix them equally. Be sure to stir slowly as you mix so as not to make air bubbles. Epoxy dries clear so if you don’t want to see through the holes you can mix in some fine sawdust the color of the wood. If you get any air bubbles just pop them with a toothpick right after pouring. It dries rock hard and can be sanded. No more holes!

Kristen have you considered painting the table a different color, possibly even black? You could actually change out the table legs to a turned wood leg. Just an alternative idea. Anyway, the way to learn is to experiment sometimes, you'll come up with a plan that works for you!

Oh sweet Kristen, you have got to give yourself some grace. You did a fantastic job recreating your chairs and table. I personally love the imperfections of the white paint. It shows the history of the table. Plus, it looks like that is really, really old wood that was cut at a sawmill. I think your table is so beautiful, and the way you styled it looks so beautiful. I’m not very patient when I tackle those types of projects either. I want it ALLLLL to be done in 2 hours or less 😂😂😂😂. I’m such a dreamer; unrealistic dreamer!!!! However, we do complete our project dreams, we realize there is true beauty in imperfections and we accept the outcome. Have a blessed week. Enjoyed this video so much. 😊❤😊❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

Hi Kristen, I inherited a dining table that is not my style, it’s very dark stained pine in perfect condition. I hide it with a white tablecloth. I’m planning on creating a new top that is exactly what I want. And give me extra length. I’ll just place a lighter wood on top for spring and summer. It will give me the opportunity to make my table rectangle instead of oval. But I like that I can take leaves out and the table can reduce to a small circle when it’s just us. It’s a win win

Love the chairs, not crazy about the table top. I have been doing both holidays for longer than I expected. Christmas started at 30 guest now 15. Thanksgiving the same. Just figured out that’s 35 + years.

You should watch Ginger Chick Rehab…she is excellent and experienced at this, often uses shellac spray to cover yellow or red undertones. When using chalk paint, she lightly sprays water to eliminate brush strokes. She is very good and meticulous as she is a reseller.❤️

I’ve done a lot of projects like this, and it always takes longer than anticipated!! You did great with persevering and each time you refinish something you’ll gain more experience and know more of what to expect. If you take your time, the outcome and time investment is usually worth it in the end. Everything looks so beautiful and you can be proud knowing you’ve accomplished this and are a strong and capable woman!! Great job!

Never done this myself, but I've watched a lot of furniture flipping shows. Use Bondo to fill all the wood cracks, using thin coats, sanding in between coats, until the tabletop is all level, paint the top black, keep the legs natural, then poly everything.

I love the chippy paint of the table! it has a farmhouse/primitive/antique vibe to it. But if you wanted to take the remaining white paint off try heating it with a heat gun and scraping if off with a metal scrapper. It's really effective.

Since my husband and I are a blended family and getting all the kids together at the same time for Christmas is difficult, with in-laws, exes and steps, so we have Christmas breakfast at our house. The kids love breakfast, and that leaves Christmas Eve and Christmas Day open for others!

Hey, Kristen! As always I enjoyed watching this video. Just a tip for your next DIY project. Durham's Rockhard Water Putty is a really inexpensive product that you can find at Home Depot or any hardware store. You can mix this with small aount of your stain, then fill in your holes/grooves and sand. You can then come back with your stain for a more even finish before applying your poly. I hope this helps! P.S. i am one of those people you mentioned in the video who doesn't do any Christmas decorating until after Thanksgiving. Fall is absolutely my favorite season and I want to thoroughly enjoy all the beautiful colors and sweetness that autumn holds. Thanks so much for the tablescape ideas for a beautiful harvest celebration. 🦃🥧🍎
