Love this one! State names were super popular in the US in the early to mid 19th century and I’ve seen a lot of them specifically for girls but also for boys and they make a great middle name. Ones I’ve seen for girls in the 19th century include Alabama, Missouri, Indiana, Florida, and California (excluding Virginia and Georgia because those were names long before they were States). For boys, Tennessee was very popular and you see some Texas as well. Later on in the late 19th early 20th century you start to see names like Nevada, Montana, and Arizona for girls. In modern times the name Alaska has gotten more popular since John Green’s book “Looking for Alaska” was published. And of course Dakota is popular for boys and girls. Some state names have fun meanings too like Nevada means “snowy” and Montana means “mountains” and Dakota comes from Lakota which is the Sioux word for “the people” but some either are completely made up or they have weird meanings (Alabama means brushy swamp).

Lily Martin there are a lot of more formal names that can be shortened to nell- Ellen, Eleanor, Danielle, Janelle, Chanel, Penelope, Helen, Helena, etc etc. maybe there’s a name in that group that works? Eleanor is a nice one because a nickname can be Nora or Nell, or even Ellie

Riooooooo! My city, Rio de Janeiro (January’s River). In Portuguese Rio(river) is a “male” world. Nova in Portuguese is a “female” world and means New. But I love the idea of using them for boys or girls :) Gender is over! Haha 😆

I like Kit and Jesse!! As a viewer from North America I find it so interesting to hear how your references are different. For example, no one I know would think of Duran Duran upon hearing the name Rio; we have a much stronger awareness of Rio De Janeiro. Also, Nova could be a disaster when travelling to latin countries or spending time with Spanish speakers because it means "no va" = "no go"/"not going"/"doesn't work". I had a Serbian coworker who was called Nada, and she was teased a lot in North America for being named "nothing"... her mom could not have known that back in the late eighties in Serbia lol

i saw rio and thought about how spanish works with masculine and feminine words and thought about Ria as a little girls name and i actually really like it! it wouldn’t be hard for her to learn to spell in school and it flows off the tongue nicely which is always what i say when i talk about baby names😂 but yea if anyone’s interested or if you want to include it in a video if some sort i think Ria is a pretty little girls name

For probably quite obvious reasons I'm very much planning to use Avery as a middle name for a future baby (Eliza Avery or Lucas Avery are the names we've discussed). I think true gender-neutral/unisex names are great, I really like a lot of these ones! There are some I just don't like for any gender - I'm just not a fan of Drew - and there are some that I think are really cool - Rio! I don't like boys names on girls, because I think that counter-acts the gender equality stuff (what does it say about attitudes towards masculinity and feminity if it's ok to name a girl James but not ok to name a boy Ruby?) but true gender-neutral I usually really enjoy.
two of best friends, twin girls, are named spencer and carson and they have an older sister named parker. their mom deliberately chose boys names for them but after knowing them i can’t really picture a boy with those names!

My daughter's name is Devynn.. we went with the Y for a more feminine look. Two other names I really liked for a girl were Emersyn and Tristyn.. Ys make it look more girl friendly.

I could never use Indiana as that's where I live, and over here a Robin is the first sign of spring!
I’ve never been crazy about gender-neutral names. However, I’ve always liked Adrienne for a girl. I also like Alex for a girl. I’ve always thought of Avery as a boys name. I first heard it on Murphy Brown. Murphy has a son named Avery on the show. Also, due to that show I think of Murphy as a girl’s name. Lol

My sister is an Eden! I love Kit and Jesse for a boy and Indiana for a girl. I love a lot of gender neutral names but I do usually prefer them for one gender or the other, the only exceptions I can think of are Rowan and Robin.

For probably quite obvious reasons I'm very much planning to use Avery as a middle name for a future baby (Eliza Avery or Lucas Avery are the names we've discussed).
I think true gender-neutral/unisex names are great, I really like a lot of these ones! There are some I just don't like for any gender - I'm just not a fan of Drew - and there are some that I think are really cool - Rio! I don't like boys names on girls, because I think that counter-acts the gender equality stuff (what does it say about attitudes towards masculinity and feminity if it's ok to name a girl James but not ok to name a boy Ruby?) but true gender-neutral I usually really enjoy.
